Get Ready

I've seen a copy of Get Ready in a local record shop (in fact, I saw it for the first time when I bought International last January) but I haven't bought it yet because I've been buying stuff form other artists and I've run out of money. As the album is a bit expensive, I want you to give me advice about whether it's worth its price (I've already heard Turn My Way and Someone Like You and I like them; Rock The Shack and 60 Miles An Hour, not so much). What do I have to expect from the rest of the album? Is it similar to WFTSC (which I really liked it)?. Is it an essencial purchase? Keep in mind that I don't have much money.

Surely it's in the cheap bin?

How can anyone interpret the lyrics to the songs on Get Ready as anti-religion is truly beyond my imagination..... 😂 😄

Surely there was much stronger religious imagery on Movement and earlier songs such as Sunrise? Apart from Run Wild (which is messy IMHO). I liked it a lot when it was released - but then I'm more into guitars and equally a JD as well as NO fan. Agree with NotAMods song-by-song comments. Anyway you'll probably want to collect all the albums eventually, so it really depends on your finances.

Well maybe not anti-religious but I think it questions GOD and other stuff that most people would not mind but I personally have some problems with it, again as I said most people would care less, so I don't want to get that deep in to it.

Tough to say if it's worth the money. It's not one of New Order's best albums, but it does have its good songs. I like 60MPH, Crystal, Primitive Notion, Turn My Way, and Run Wild, but I do not much like Vicious Streak, Slow Jam, Rock the Shack, Someone Like You, and Close Range.

Can't you listen to it on Spotify? Or on YouTube? All songs should be on youtube even if there's not videos to go with the songs. Can't believe in this day and age you can't listen to an album before you buy it :scratcheshead:

I hadn't heard Get Ready (apart from Crystal radio edit)until i actually bought the cd on release day 2001. It didn't do a lot for me on very first listen but Vicious Streak was the first song i took to on further listening.

Always rated the guitar work on Slow Jam and actually like the lyrics, think they're hilarious.

Onnly thing that lets Primitive Notion down is a few dodgy lyrics here and there all that "magic potion" nonsense, not funny in the way Slow Jam's lyrics are. 60MPH was good back in the day but rarely give it a spin now.

Someone Like You and Close Range have their moments but ultimately...hmmm, they're no AOC or Leave Me Alone, put it that way.

Think i first heard Crystal when i saw the video on MTV or something and managed to record it. Fantastic, and immediately brilliant, felt like a real fuck you! this is how it's done to all those 90s tossers not so long before like Oasis

I do own the Japanese pressing of Get Ready but Behind Closed Doors was originally the b-side to Crystal.

For me the essential purchases are

Substance

LowLife

Technique

PC&L

I would avoid Get Ready until all the above have been thoroughly digested....

On topic - its a good album - as others have mentioned there's a couple of songs that don't appeal to most, but a couple of crackers too (Crystal probably the best, primative notion would be a fave of mine, but then so is Run Wild). As its such an old album, I don't think you should waste too much cash on it tho - it really shouldn't be overpriced at this stage - maybe the Amazon option might be best for you.

Overall it got great reviews on Amazon from people who listened to the album.

The cover art is very good also

In my opinion it's one of their best albums. It has a lot guitars on it so if you prefer electronic New Order then I'd buy one of the other albums instead.

I personally see Get Ready as the better of the newer albums (i.e. Republic, Get Ready, WFTSC), but like mentioned if ou like a more guitar driven NO than you'll like GR better. I'd say get Substance first, Technique next, and go on from there....

I agree with buying Substance first - preferably the cassette version with Dubvulture, Shellcock and Bizarre Dub Triangle - and then Technique.

But Get Ready? If you find pleasure in childish, two-chord crap, then listen to Get Ready. If you want something more challenging, try Waiting For The Sirens' Call...

I like both sides of New Order, so I'm looking for an album which features a balance between these two. Having said that, I really enjoy WFTSC, which has a lot of guitars, so I don't mind buying another guitar-driven album.

First of all, I have a downloading program which doesen't donwload entire albums, just songs, and you can't find all of them. Plus, it's the only studio album I've found here in my town and I like buying original albums when I have the opportunity. It might be the last original NO album I'd buy in a long time as I don't have an international credit card, which is required to buy from Amazon.

ARGHHH... I just wrote a long review of this and now its disappeared. Here we go again.

Get Ready is a brilliant album... why it is regarded by many as a rock album I don't really know though. Yes there is audible guitars, but there are some really nice electronic sounds on here, kicking off with the lead-track and single, the sublime Crystal, the last great single from them in my opinion [save maybe, Waiting For The Sirens' Call], which on its own saves it from being a poor album, but the good music doesn't stop there. The beautiful "Turn My Way" follows, one of their finest album tracks of the 21st century, though Corgans vocal may be a turn-off for some. I happen to be a huge Pumpkins fan, so it doesn't bother me at all.

Vicious Streak is a lush electronic track with a good mood and atmosphere, Someone Like You should have been the follow-up single to Crystal and gave them their second top 10 single. I don't really get the fuss with 60mph, it's okay, but doesn't stand out as a great one for me. Though the video is very funny...

Close Range is another highlight. Much better live, shame they don't play it anymore.

Get Ready is also in my opinion miles better than Waiting For The Sirens' Call. Now that, I would see why people would regard it as a rock album. Much more rocky than Get Ready. I also think Get Ready has aged VERY well. 11 years after release it still sounds very fresh and contemporary IMO.

In my opinion you should get it. 😎

GR has aged v.well stil play it a lot. As good as brotherhood, better than wftsc, republic, movement. Not as godd as the others but then again not much is. I like GR better now than I did when it was released. Rock the shack should have been replaced but I don't hate this track as much as some on this board.b

It's probably my least listened to of NO albums,(besides Movement, that I don't own) but it's grown on me. I liked Crystal, Vicious Streak, Primitive Notion, Someone like you, and the bonus track on my edition, Behind Closed Doors. But I'd say I enjoyed Electronic's third album Twisted Tenderness better overall. That said, it's not dated at all, IMO.

It might be a good idea to ask around the spanish language forum - plenty of South Americans there, they'll probably have some ideas and suggestions for you regardina all the albums, not only GR. Although all songs from all the albums are available to listen to, if not download, on youbetyoube, so it shouldn't be too difficult to make up your mind regarding a purchase.

Personally I reckon it's a worthwhile album, certainly better than the limpwristed synthpap of Republic / Raise The Pressure and the hit 'n' miss Sirens. The second half's weaker (often the way with NO LPs - for me, anyway) e.g. I don't like Bernard's C'mon-sort-yerself-out-mate lyrical bent as on Close Range - though that one's better live. Anyway, Crystal is the last bollock-crunching single, Turn My Way and Vicious Streak are perfect melancholia, and Primitive Notion would be the equal of 24 Hours or Sunrise if the lyrics werre less wanky. Don't like 60 mph much though.

Barney has never been the greatest lyricist, and there are a lot of real cringe-worthy lines in some of the 'classics' (Thieves Like Us, Face-Up, Paradise, etc). However, they don't really bother me as much as his lyrics do on Get Ready. I mean, they aren't any more clunky than usual, but for some reason they really bother me here. Almost makes the album unlistenable. What's going on here?

Yeah it's a funny one re the clunky lyrics. Clunky Barney lyrics were great in the 80s but were not so great in 2001,i totally agree.Kind of odd that, and a shame . Though one i do find still great is Slow Jam with all that*"i like that kinda stuff, it beats arithmetic"*

I think that the prior albums had a clunky feel... so not only were his lyrics a bit off, but so was the recording and a bit of the playing. Get Ready is a highly polished product, and so the lyrics don't match what would be expected of that quality of production... just a thought..

Yeah, I agree that's what it probably is. That's what made pre-Republic New Order so special; everything was just a tad...off.

Makes me wonder what Crystal or Primitive Notion would sound like if they weren't quadruple-tracked and laminated to death.
