That 'abomination' is rocking theatres all over the world. Literally everybody I spoke to in New York, whether or not they gave a shit that Hooky wasn't there, agreed that the new bassist is better. I met dozens of people who'd been to the gig including musicians, DJs, old friends of the band and journalists who they all loved Tom's input. Aged New Order fans and people who'd never seen them before; it didn't matter. Everyone loved Tom's energy and downright skill.

The only person I met who didn't enjoy the gig, a pretty well-known punk musician from Queens who I was speaking to last night, said that the only good thing about it was Tom's playing. I reminded him about the drumming and he admitted it was good but didn't like the fact that some of it was taped; he thought that was a cop out. That's how picky he was. He didn't like New Order's drum machine.

All this bollocks about 'the original lineup' is sentimental garbage, I'm afraid. "New Order Featuring..." my arse.

They should do something about that weapon with the inflatable microphone though.

I was wondering also in what way was he better, I am guessing that Tom is roughly the age that Hooky would have been around the time of Technique so do they mean that Tom now is better than Hooky was then or are they comparing Tom's perfomrance to Hooky's in 2005-06 when New Order last toured. I think it's just a fair reflection of fan sentiment on the whole, to be honest - Hooky did leave the band and subsequently hasn't been very wise or discrete in his comments regarding his former bandmates in the press, it probably follows that the majority of NO fans won't be happy with him having swipes at the other NO band members. Can't speak for everyone, but personally I didn't find this particularly endearing. While we don't know the whole story of what happened and why (and should we really know anyway?), Barney has been admirably restrained in the press much of the time by comparison, so this helps make him appear less of a knob than Hooky, at least on the basis of the interviews.

With the stuff about Jack, I wasn't aware of the incident (assuming there was one) that led to him being hounded off here, but I guess if you go in to bat for Hooky on this forum and you're a member of his band, you may find some comments/questions hard work. It can't have been easy to see people slagging off his dad, from that perspective nobody deserves that.

Oh, and I think Tom is pretty great too - was very impressed with him when I saw them in March and he seems to have improved the bass sound even more since; he's not better neccessarily, but certainly no worse...noticably fewer bum notes and less posing perhaps...

As for Hooky playing bum notes, he is hardly unique within the band in that regard. At the same time Phil and Tom are I would guess less likely to make mistakes on stage than the original members but I would still get more excited about listening to a New Order bootleg from 82-87 than anything from the recent past.

And to some of the other comments, I would disagree that the majority of fans take FULL issue with the Light and what they are doing. At the end of the day, Hooky's produced basslines I'll take to the grave with me - Ceremony, Transmission, Age of Consent, that Perfect Kiss outro, even something iconic as Blue Monday.

What I meant was that the previously mentioned perception of "Hooky bashing" is, in my opinion, a reflection of a common opinion among New Order fans who, like me, think Hooky's indiscretions and poorly judged comments in interviews about his former bandmates make him difficult to sympathise with. Would I prefer if Hooky was in the band still and it wasn't this messy? Absolutely - I doubt anyone here genuinely thinks otherwise. Tom is a capable replacement for a member who departed of his own volition; I think he does a damn good job. There just no need to invoke Susan Boyle into proceedings though, that was totally uncalled for!

Yep, I love Hooky's basslines as well, nobody is taking them away from him. But, at the end of the day, you don't have people running to your defence when you have shat the nest as comprehensively as Hooky has done in recent years with his comments.

Hook came off as a raging hypocrite when he dissed his former bandmates (the ones who are credited for the band's success as much as he is) for wanting to continue New Order without him after he left by his own decision, and after that he went along to perform full JD albums live without consorting the very same band members that were also instrumental for JD's success.

And after that he continued to bad-mouth them during interviews and they've restrained themselves from hitting back rather well. I don't blame Barney for firing back now at this point in time. I think they've had enough to tell Hooky to piss off. Personally I think Barney and the rest of NO should just stay quiet and do their thing, but everyone has a threshold especially when someone is publicly trying to ruin your reputation on a professional level.

As for Jack, there's a difference between standing up for your dad and standing up for your dad who acts like major unprofessional !#*@.
