I have just received an email about the Tom Rowlands mix which reads in its last line:

'Stay tuned for an exciting new single and live news, coming later this month'

I don't think it will get more exciting than a dozen semi-interesting remixes of "Singularity" in a coloured vinyl and cheap paperback CD version. The most interesting thing about it will be the colour they'll choose this time for the "Techno-Tudor"-design.

Thanks. Though that to me reads more like the news is coming this month, not the single[:d]

"Stay tuned for an exciting new single and live news"

The most exciting thing would be if they release a brand new track as the new single like in the good old days.

With age singularity has moved up for me. Now my 3rd favorite song on the cd behind academic and unlearn. I'm looking forward to this. On a sad note. Tutti Frutti has gone way down. Just not holding up. I'm putting it in the same group as Jet Stream. As Restless is also aging well. A good solid 4 on my list. It's a good solid New Order sound that will mix well with past songs.

Any idea what the live news may be? I'm sure I saw some mention of a UK tour from Tom or Phil a few weeks ago?

Hopefully not just festival appearances, I can't be doing with poncing around in a muddy field with cider-drinking Mumford and Sons fans these days.*

*Jodrell Bank excepted.

yeah they said they/re doing festivals but will fit a uk tour in between

i have a funny feeling parklife will be one of the festivals.run by the same team as whp and line up being announced soon

A contact at ADA (Mute's US distributor) confirmed, as most of us have suspected, that "Singularity" will be announced as the next physical single. No further details beyond that.

It was also confirmed that a US tour will be announced as part of the "exciting live news" mooted in the recent e-mail from the band.

Singularity (Erol Alkan's Extended Mix)

Very excited for this. He is one of my favorite remixers and DJs. Usually his mixes are credited as Extended Re-Work though. Will be interesting to see if that is the case or if the band wants only a mix. He is known to have a long build up, which turns people off sometimes.

He has mellowed a bit the last few years, toning down the explosiveness of some mixes (Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero, is one of my favorites but that thing gets in your face).

I reckon it will be more in line with these, toned down a bit, but I would love if he went the other way and made it crunchier.

I've heard it (the Radio Edit) and it's unsurprisingly a straight ahead edit of the album version with sections lopped off here and there but broadly follows the same structure. I'm not entirely sure it works because most of Singularity's appeal is the menacing build up which we've all come to know but I suppose they had to get the "size" down somehow. I do hope there will be a proper Single Version just like Restless and Tutti got. The Radio Edits in both their cases were kept promo only as I expect this one to be.

Well, so far we have the following...

  1. Singularity (Single Edit)
  2. Singularity (Extended Mix)
  3. Singularity (Mark Reeder Duality Remix)
  4. Singularity (Erol Alkan's Extended Mix)
  5. Singularity (JS Zeiter Dub)

Restless and Tutti Frutti both had 6 tracks on the CD releases, so I'm guessing there will be at least one extra remix. I'm placing my bet on there being a Tom Rowland remix added since that was one of the tracks for the album he helped produce.

Just heard this Erol remix at around 11.10pm. I guess it will be repeated around ten past the hour every couple of hours as the show loops. Nice simple sequenced intro. Doesn't waste much time bringing in Barney's vocal - which is very prominent in the mix early on. Gradually the track sounds more like the original as it goes on. It possibly gets a little too 'extended' later on in the mix, and my attention wandered a little. But overall this is nice. Looking forward to owning it.

Moderne Decay wrote: I'm guessing there will be at least one extra remix. I'm placing my bet on there being a Tom Rowland remix added since that was one of the tracks for the album he helped produce.

I like your thinking but I wouldn't put too much money on that bet.

I listened to the Erol remix as well and found it kind of boring. It has a nice minimal synth vibe to it, but the overall mix sounds very static. It's kind of like he recorded it, but bounced it out without doing any live mixing while experimenting with the FX in real time. The Hot Chip remix sounded this way as well.

To better explain it: think of Martin Hannett sitting in front of a giant mixing counsel after recording Joy Division, listening back to all the tracks obsessively, then tweaking a dozen faders while recording a mix to tape. Now picture some guy recording all his synth gear into a computer, lining up the tracks with all the FX set in stone, then hitting "SAVE" & "SEND." As much as I love the current trend toward using hardware synth gear, I'm still not hearing a lot of creative live mixing in today's electronic music scene.

Debaser wrote: I like your thinking but I wouldn't put too much money on that bet.

I mentioned that because for whatever reasons, Tom Rowland released a Tutti Frutti remix after the vinyl and CD singles were released. It's available online, but I don't count that as being official since it hasn't made its way to any physical product.

Seems to have disappeared again.

Mute link removed.

CD single unavailable on the major Amazon sites, despite Mark Reeder's comments. Even the vinyl's been removed from all sites bar Amazon US.

No pre-sale for anything Singularity in the official New Order Store.

Even the Japanese Tutti Frutti 12" has now been bumped back a month.

Anything untoward going on here? Hooky-related?

I have a sneaking suspicion that Record Store Day might have something to do with this. Either Mute won't be able to get it pressed in time, due to the pressing plants being clogged by RSD releases, or it's being held back for an RSD release. All just a hunch though.

Just pre-ordered from Piccadilly Records. £13.48 for the bundle and £3.55 postage. They don't take your money until the items ship and deliver on release day. Always very reliable.

1 1 like

iTunes now showing it as being released this Friday, £3.99 for the following:

Single Edit Extended Mix Erol Alkan's Extended Rework Erol Alkan's Stripped Mix Mark Reeder's Duality Remix Mark Reeder's Individual Remix JS Zeiter Remix JS Zeiter Dub Liars Remix Tutti Frutti (Tom Rowlands Remix)

Only really want the Erol Alkan versions, but at that price I'm not going to grumble about getting the rest of them thrown in.

1 1 like

So our (UK) price choices so far are: Piccadilly records 12" + CD: £13.48 + £3.55 postage = £17.03 New Order Store:12" + CD: £12.98 + £4.98 postage = £17.96 Mute Bank: 12" + CD: £13.99 + £3.95 postage = £17.94 itunes: MP3 £3.99 = £ 3.99

So there's not much difference in price on the physical product, though it's weird that Mute and the NO Store aren't identical.

It might be worth keeping an eye on Beatport, Juno etc in case they also put these on sale soon. Sometimes Beatport are the first to put these things on sale (MP3 or WAV choice usually). Though they are more expensive than itunes.

1 1 like

And for the handful of AU collectors, again, avoid the NO store.

I'd happily furnish them with more business if their international shipping rates were even close to reasonable. They work out to be AU$20+ more than Piccadilly Records.

Amazon's usually the best bet however Amazon UK has no 12" and Amazon US has no CDS - yet.

The 9 track download package with the 12" has all versions apart from the JS Zeiter Dub. The iTunes download has 10 tracks including the dub - a crafty ploy to get us completists to pay for the single all over again (particularly if that dub stays 'album only' on iTunes)?

I'll hang on until I get the 12" and download code, just in case it's a mistake...

So yeah, anyway here's hoping for some interesting Singularity remixes[:)]

The official line is purple. Piccadilly Records seem to have copy and pasted that bit as it says exactly the same thing for Tutti Frutti. I just ignored that and placed my order. And as you say, I can't see them releasing it in exactly the same colour as the last release. Purple for sure.

Well Mute Bank and the New Order store clearly state purple vinyl. Surely if anyone knows, it's them. I would hazard a guess that Mute have re-used their blurb for Tutti Frutti and forgotten to change the bit about the colour when they sent info out to record stores. So then places such as Norman Records quote the blurb and confuse the punters.

Incidentally I linked to Norman Records as we may have a new "cheapest option" for buying the single: 12" £7.99 +CD £5.49 + shipping £3 = £16.48

Amazon is currently one of the most expensive options at £24.87. Tsk.

Not too bad but not really close to the existing mixes.

I still think that the extended album (with a couple of exceptions, Tutti Frutti, Academic) is the definitive work on MC.

By and large, the remixes haven't been as good as the 'originals' or the extended originals, though I did like Restless RAC & Weatherall and Tutti Frutti Hot Chip remixes.

Thanks. That went up quickly! Has anyone managed to successfully shazam it for their exclusive remix? I couldn't...

It's Mark Reeder's Duality Remix (4:57). So not exactly "exclusive".

I thought it was a great performance as well. Very energetic. I stayed up later than usual to watch it live on my big screen with surround sound, haha. I remember when Iggy Pop played on the Late Show in January, they uploaded a second song onto YouTube which wasn't aired on TV a few days later. I'd keep checking online since a second song might pop up within a day or two.

Yep it was an outstanding performance on Colbert.Woke up in early hours and looked up CBS stream online and watched it live and was blown away at how good they sounded and Bernard's vocals.Best TV spot they've done in ages.Tried to capture it but audio failed so great that it's online now.Yeah will be interesting to see if they did another song while they were there.Haven't tried the Shazam thing.

Same here. It was actually rather disappointing to hear this remix because I'm a fan of Liars' music. They usually do some pretty weird and noisy stuff, but not the case here. It's like they turned it into one of those "trap music" type songs you hear in a lot trendy nightclubs these days. I'm sure the bros will dig it, but bleh. Pass.

Ah yes, the previews are twice as long as the amazon ones. Reeder's individuality mix sounds promising, and the Zeiter mixes sound like proper dancefloor material. Looking forward to these.

Reeder was the best of the bunch, IMHO. Nothing too radical but I generally like his work.

The full EP is on Google Music. You can listen to it for free if you get the one month trial, but the thing that baffles me is why is it out now everywhere except on CD and iTunes?

Went twice already through the whole EP, very enjoyable mixes. Reeder's are both great, Erol Alkan's also, the Liars mix is listenable but not that enjoyable as the others while the JS Zeiter are okay, but I see no need for both of them on there as they're both dubs practically.

I'm assuming it will be out on iTunes once the physical CD is released in UK, which is supposed to be this Friday. Amazon's US website is showing Friday for the digital release as well.

I just got an email from Piccadilly Records:

"In Stock Ready For Dispatch New Order - Singularity CDS - £5.49 Pre Ordered

If you are still waiting for On Order and Pre Ordered items to arrive, but want all in-stock items sent to you ASAP, just click here to inform us. We will have to charge separate postage for remaining items once they arrive. New Order - Singularity Ltd 12" - £7.99 Expected 25 Mar '16"

Apparently the CD has arrived early. I wonder if the vinyl is going to be late? Wouldn't you expect them to arrive in the same delivery? Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow and still get delivered on Friday. Not that I want to cause paranoia or panic...Ha!

Anyone else got any stock/shipping notifications from other sources?

And finally , Bernard is cool. He explains things well, he likes pools, reading, and writing the lyrics in the winter, in essence he is the best friend one could have for road trips, camping , talking about music and generally being cool So I wish bernard lots and lots of songs to complete next winter, and dozens more wonderful songs happen from lots more winters. How can anyone not love bernard , or like other stars more - sure ,I can understand if it is Beethoven or Louis Armstrong, but bono or sting or slash or snot just defies reason sting is not related to Bernard in any way

What is the point of releasing a single on a Bank Holiday? There is no post delivered on a Bank Holiday. I pre-ordered the 12 inch and CD via the Official Online Store. It was sent by courier. Unfortunately they did not post it until Thursday and the courier service is a 48 hour delivery. I've just had an email that it has been delivered this morning (Saturday) I had it delivered to my works address as I can't guarantee to be at home all day over the Easter break so won't be able to get it until Tuesday. Saturday is the earliest it could be delivered (one day after official release). It's a joke that you order from the official store but they can't deliver it you by the official release date. The worst scenario of ordering from an official store is that you get it on the release date but more often than not you can get it a day or two earlier. This is just a joke when they can't ship it in a timely manner.

Well it's a lovely long bank holiday weekend. I'm sure we can all find other things to make us happy besides pining for some remixes of a track we already have. It'll be something to look forward to when everyone's back to the daily grind on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, my postie's just knocked...

Thanks Piccadilly Records!

One advantage to getting these delivered directly is that no one else has handled the thing first like in the old days of record shops. It truly is minty mint. In fact it seems a shame to even remove the cellophane. But if i were to remove the cellophane from the flimsy CD sleeve, can anyone recommend the best way of doing so without damaging the card? My Restless & Tutti CD sleeves both look a bit fucked from my struggles to open them.

2 2 likes

Managed to put a knife mark on one of the two Tutti Frutti ones! But then found that if you gently rub the plastic between fingers the heat generated eventually loosens the cellophane..then you can remove Minty Mint. There may be other problems in the World but we all need a challenge! I watched How as a kid. 😎

I'll hang on until I get the 12" and download code, just in case it's a mistake...

Ok I'm being a hypocrite here after telling ya'll not to get excited about your deliveries, but I'm at home, sick. So.... Just to confirm, the download package with the 12" is ten tracks not nine. You get the lot in MP3 and FLAC. So I guess if people want to save money they could just buy the 12" and get all the mixes digitally.

Anyone not buying the 12" who wants to know about the Saville 'clue' to the artwork, see below:

I think Erol's Extended Rework remains my favourite. His stripped mix is similar until about 4 minutes where it remains more um, 'stripped' compared to the extended rework. The Zeiter remixes are indeed the most remixed/clubby versions of the track - probably good to dance to but won't appeal to NO fans who complain about the lack of NO in remixes. Reeder's individual remix brings out some bits that the others don't.

Nice one [happy]

I got a reply from Mute today:

"Hi Jozek,

Thank you for your email.

I have checked the system and I can confirm that your order was shipped on the 26th of March and should arrive with you shortly, if it has not already done so.

For orders sent to within The UK by standard delivery we expect a rough delivery estimate of 1-4 working days.

As you have chosen ‘standard’ shipping, as opposed to ‘courier’ shipping, the delivery isn’t tracked.

Please see our help & support section for further information on shipping times.

If you still haven’t received your order by 7 days after the stated shipping date, contact us and we’ll advise further.

Thank you for shopping with us and we hope your order arrives shortly.

Kind Regards Susy Digital Stores Customer Services"

No explanation on why it wasn't sent earlier or why AFTER the release date. I did send two emails to them, the first to ask if there was a problem with my order (I got a dispatch email the next day) the second was to ask them why it wasn't sent before the release date so it would get here nearly on time and why it was dispatched after the release date (maybe I will get an email explaining this, but I won't hold my breath). It seems by the mail sent to me I may have it come the end of the week. I will never again order stuff from Mute or the New Order store, they are a total shambles and just don't seem to care.

I thought when you buy in advance, you should get the order on the day of release, okay I know it was a bank holiday weekend, but to not even give me information on it. They took my money straight away when I ordered it, so a little customer care wouldn't go a miss. If I ordered it through Amazon, I would of had it by now.

Sorry for the rant, just very frustrated.

The New Order online shop is really annoying...as soon as the pre-order was available, I've ordered the coloured 12", CD-single and the download as well. As there was no sign or hint the full download EP would be given with the 12" and/or CD-single. A few weeks later it says the 12" will contain a download-code including more remixes. I've immediately sent a message to the shop and Warner customer service and I got this reply:

Hello ,Thank you for your patience. We have been advised that he Singularity - 12" Purple Vinyl only includes the following downloads and not the whole 10 tracks.Tutti Frutti (Tom Rowlands Remix) Digital Track Singularity (Extended Mix) Digital TrackWe apologise for any inconvenience caused. Thanks,AlexYour Warner Music Customer Service Team

So, I was more or less happy I would have all mixes in the end. "Patience" indeed, had to wait a week for an answer. But yesterday I finally got my physical releases and guess what... the 12" includes ALL the 10 downloads...!!!! *@#$!%* I want a refund now, or they can send me the following in digital quality:

  • Restless (Radio Edit) [3'29] (3'33)
  • Tutti Frutti (Radio Edit) [3'40]
  • Tutti Frutti (Radio Mix) [3'47]
  • Tutti Frutti (Hot Chip Remix Vinyl Edit) [8'50]
  • Tutti Frutti (Takkyu Ishino Remix) [7'54]
  • Singularity (Radio Edit) [4'02]
  • Nothing But A Fool (Extended Mix 2)
  • Superheated (Extended Mix 2)

I can guess the reply I think... probably none And yeah, I had to send multiple messages as well before I could download the ordered digital ep ...

No, I haven't missed that part... I can hardly call it exclusive anymore as the box-set only has two (probably slightly different) extended mixes in the end! If I knew I wouldn't have bought it. I really don't care about vinyls... in fact it really annoys me that vinyl and CD are put together into one box-set. To me it's the music that counts, in high(est) quality, so I prefer - still - CD's. I don't judge or like to be judged because of giving preferences to vinyl, cassette, digital/download, CD or whatever format. Everybody has each own preferences.

The box-set does contain the 'highest quality' version of the music. You get Hi-Res FLAC copies of both the original album plus extended mixes in 96kHz/24bit which is technically superior to 44kHz/16bit CD. Not to mention vinyl can also muster a higher quality sound than CD under the right circumstances. CD hasn't been "highest quality" for a while now particularly with the emergence of legal Hi-Res downloads. It's not about judging in this instance, it's about what's factually correct in terms of technical sound quality.

The Music Complete compact disc was probably one of the last things I bought weeks after the album was released. I managed to get hold of a copy of the regular black vinyl a few days prior to the official release date and using the coupon inside downloaded the Hi-Res FLACs which sounded superb. Why bother ripping 44/16 FLACs from the CD when I could just download 96/24 files legally from my purchase of the vinyl? CDs are definitely becoming less of an essential medium in this day and age. It's just the way things are headed.

At the end of the day, nobody forced you to buy the box-set. From a fan point of view and as others have said it is aesthetically a really nice item to own and has held it's value. If you sold it tomorrow you'd probably make your money back plus a little bit extra. If you got a signed one you'd probably make even more money.

That's providing i could ever get my head round all that causal effect stuff😕 .And another addition to the Music Complete singles slipcase if nothing else- i reckon one more single should fit in and nicely then that's yer lot.
