Radio Interviews / Audio Documentaries etc.

Hello.

Back in the day, I used to have a whole host of radio interviews, audio documentaries on the band etc. recorded onto cassette, in varying quality. Most of these are sadly now lost to time.

It would therefore be nice to try and get digital copies of this stuff. So this is a general shout-out to any other fans that have any radio stuff on mp3 etc.

I’m especially looking for stuff from the 80s / 90s, but would still be very interested in anything from the 00s and beyond. Am also interested in similar material of any of the splinter bands too (Revenge, Electronic etc.), along with other related interviews (Wilson, Saville, Hannett, Factory etc.).

If anyone can help me out, that would be great. PM me if you can or post here.

Many thanks.

I recorded the entire November 1998 John Peel show which had the full line-up (including Gillian) chatting with John, choosing influential tracks (Sex Pistols, etc) and we also got to hear the 5 x new Peel Session tracks which were much sought after at the time. They weren't commercially released until 6 years later on the In Session compilation, which itself has become bit of a rarity. I remember editing together a transfer of the Peel Session tracks, which was of a pretty respectable quality at the time, but didn't bother with the interview segments, a missed opportunity. When In Session came out it took me ages to get used to the mastering as I'd been listening to my own transfer for years up to that point (!)

I purposely used 2 x Metal-standard tapes at the time which were really good quality... I still have them somewhere but alas no tape deck. Finding and digitising them into a 2 x CDr album has long been a goal of mine.

It might even be worth the purchase of a reasonable tape deck alone.

I wish there was a service the BBC offered where you could email in, pay a reasonable fee, and have them send you a copy of what is in the archives. Those transcription discs of live gigs have forever gone for silly money.

Hmm I have attempted three different versions of a reply but each time the Forum tells me "this message was rejected because it was spam". WTF??? [blackeye] So, short version: there used to be a well known chain of camera shops that could do this conversion for you. There are other places online that still can. Might be less hassle than getting a tape deck. I'll send you the original version of my post by PM (if the forum will let me), considering I went to the trouble of doing links and stuff...

^ Yep, I’ve had that “spam” problem sometimes. Usually when I’ve edited a post when I click submit again it thinks I’m a spammer.

Been hundreds of radio things over the years . I remember obtaining some early 80s ones on cassette through NME back page ads, stuff like a Manchester Piccadilly radio one from 83/84 and one or two others. Long lost now.

I remember listening to a two part Radio 1 thing around early 88 , it was on over a couple of Saturday afternoon 1 hour slots and was Radio 1 catching the 87/88 popularity of New Order with the success of Substance. It was more of a documentary than interviews. I recorded all the session songs from the Peel Dec 98 thing. But as for digital versions that I still have, the one that first springs to mind is one I have of Bernard being interviewed by Jo Whiley on Radio 1 in about November 98, or at least for years I had it titled as Jo Whiley interview with Bernard but I think some years ago I listened to it and it didn’t sound like Jo Whiley so I’m not sure but I am sure I have it as an mp3. I could have sworn I heard it live when it was first broadcast. When I get time I’ll look it up in my files and see what else I have.

I remember talking to a friend of mine at the Ally Pally gig on New Year's Eve 1998 and he informed me of the session, which had been played a few days before. I remember cursing that I had missed it. But I think I got a copy not long after. Quite a decent session. Wish I'd heard the interview. Would be good to hear it now.

Weirdly, I didn't buy the 'In Session' CD when it came out. I was going through a (thankfully short) period of my life where the band weren't really doing it for me (had been turned off by the constant 'best of's and remixes). Then, when I duly tried to purchase the CD, it was going for silly money. Got a CD rip which lasted me until three years or so ago, until I managed to pick up the original CD for about £25.

Yeah - I think there are probably hundreds of radio interviews and documentaries out there. There probably aren't too many from the 1980-1992 period though, due to their 'limited press coverage' stance at the time. It only got a bit daft from 1993 onwards. Same with the TV appearances. New Order interviews were a real treat back in the day. These days, it seems anyone can film a brief interview and stick it online. Not that I'm complaining though - always good to see new stuff.

I'm thinking that there shouldn't be too much out there in regards to 80s radio stuff so, in theory, it should be relatively easy to collect. Providing it's in the hands of fans generous enough to give me copies, of course. [;)]

Still, I'm interested in absolutely anything out there, folks; not just the early stuff.

That 1988 two-parter sounds great. It also sounds familiar. I may well have had that some years ago (sadly no more).

I'd certainly be interested in the 'Jo Whiley' thing and anything else you've got. Thanks!

I also taped the interview - session from December 1998, but I jumped the songs they chose. No one cares that I did this, not even me. The best thing about the sesh was it was the first 'proper' release of the Perfecto True Faith mash-up, but the Novelty Has Gone (see what etc). It was broadcast slap bang between the two Temptation 'events'. I also taped the hour-long 93 Radio One doc 'How Does It Feeel?' (with John Peel again, featuring all the band plus Wilson), but my parents must've thrown it outa the house. They threw ME out of the fucking house, why the fuck would they keep hold of a New Order doc? PS One for the trainspotters http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/New\_Order - when Peelie first played Blue Monday, he said it was quite boring. He had a point.

Found a few mp3s of interviews i have. The 'Jo Whiley' one is definitely not Jo Whiley but it's labelled Radio 1 interview 11/98.Don't know who the lady interviewing Bernard is and i doubt it was even Radio 1.Bernard did get interviewed by Jo Whiley on Radio 1 around that time because i remember listening to it at work and she played World In Motion from Reading 98 but the mp3 i have i'm now pretty sure isn't it.The one i have is about 17 minutes.I also have a 'Republic' interview, not the May 93 Radio 1 Evening Session one though. Also have an Ian Curtis interview form 1980 , Radio Blackburn or something .Obtained that one a fair few years back now.

Before anyone goes to the time and trouble of ripping old media, I have the following in perfect MP3 form.

  • The entire 1 hour Peel Interview from 1998 mentioned above
  • Something called "How Does it Feel" from 1993 - probably the Jo Whiley one?
  • A 2-parter from 1988 called "Substance"

If someone creates a share somewhere I can upload them...

That was the one I meant - John Peel interviewing the four plus Tony Wilson on - THAT'S RIGHT - the 'history'. My favourite parts (after Mel C's shoulderblades) are 'Electronic have been knocking out the hits' (ah yes, they never stop), and nerdy Steve saying 'We've made an album and we hope it won't be like the Sphynx or the Pyramids: something people only discover after we're dead.' Still, nowhere near the NOStory cringe factor.

The Jo Whiley one i'm thinking of was from 1998 because Bernard was talking about how they had got back together and had done Reading 98 a few months before and Jo Whiley played World In Motion from Reading 98.I remember the 1988 Substance 2 parter on Radio 1, John Peel talked about how awesome the February 1981 Heaven gig was.The December 1998 Peel interview was on the night December 30th and was sandwiched between the night of the Manchester Evening News Arena gig Dec 29th and the Alexandra Palace gig December 31st 1998.I recall Gillian selecting Candi Staton You've Got The Love as one of her favourite records.

Is it Annie Nightingale?

Incidentally I suspect the record for longest audio interview with Bernard is probably this (fairly recent) one that you also uploaded to YT Mr Fotzepolitic:

Many thanks for the offer of a share. I'd love these. I'm not really sure how to create a 'share' though. If anyone is familiar with how to set something like that up, could they possibly help out?

Alternatively, I usually use WeTransfer.com to share files. The sender adds the email of the person they're sending the files to and, once the files are uploaded, a link to the files is then sent to the recipient. Never had an issue with them. If all else fails, perhaps this might be a good way to get the files to me and others.

Thanks again for the offer; it would be great to hear these.

Just been listening to the interview labelled 11/03/83. It appears to be the Radio 1 ‘Rock On’ broadcast from 12/03/83, which I already had a copy of.

However, what’s odd about your version is that it differs from the broadcast version. It contains various bits that weren’t broadcast, including bits where they talk about having to ‘redo’ certain sections of the interview. In other words, it’s the rough edits. There’s some great little bits where the interviewer (Richard Skinner?) makes various ‘off air’ comments asking whether the band were deliberately sending him up etc. Nice.

So, this is very intriguing. Can I ask how you got hold of this little gem?

Hey - it's never too late. Perhaps you guys could reconvene and do some other NO/JD related projects. Restoring interviews or other such stuff.

Just listening to the 'Substance' documentary now and you are right; it is excellent. Great candid interviews, really good choice of songs played etc.

Might be nice for classic interviews of this nature to get heard by more fans; the Recycle blog had an impressive following and would be a good vessel for stuff like this.

Just thought I'd resurrect this old thread as I'm still trying to find quite a few radio interviews that exist / that I used to have.

About a week or two ago, I came upon a listing that I made of my cassette tapes back in the mid 90s and this listed various radio interviews. I still thought I had the tapes in question, so thought I'd try to transfer them digitally. I dug out a 3mm headphone jack and researched how to record from cassette (a simple thing to do, it seems, with QuickTime).

I then popped along to my mum's to retrieve said tapes...

only to find that they are missing!

Who knows where they are? I can't imagine that I binned them (I rarely throw anything away).

Seeing all the interviews I used to have and realising that I don't still have them has made me a little fed up.[:(]

So, I'm on the scrounge to see if anyone has these lurking on a hard-drive, or potentially on a cassette that they wouldn't mind ripping for me (or lending me, maybe).

I can't say that I used to have all of these, but these are the ones I'm specifically after:

NB I know the 'Cook With Hook' features are on YouTube (which I have ripped), but I have a feeling that there's more of these and I don't know which dates I have, so have left them on the list.

Long, long list, eh?

If anyone can find even a handful of these, I'd be really happy, and it would go some way to easing the pain of losing those tapes. Please don't be put off by the length of the list. Please have a look through and search those hard-drives / cassettes. If you want to focus on anything, I'm after the 80s / early 90s interviews mostly, so that should narrow things down a bit.

As always, with me, I'm up for a trade and have a tonne of other interviews.

Yikes, that's a big list and i haven't a single one of them and don't remember or was ever aware of most of 'em.One i do remember is the 27/09/87 one on Radio 1.Seem to recall i somehow got it taped even though i was away in Blackpool for the weekend for a mad one.I either set a timer to record on a stereo or got my mum to record it but i definitely remember not hearing it til i got back after the weekend. It was mostly Wilson actually, going on about a film he had planned called The Mad Fuckers and which was to be a tale of well, some mad fuckers set on the roads between Manchester and Blackpool. It never got made, obviously.

What was that Peter Hook thing that was on Radio 1 one evening in around early March 1986? I remember listening and it was him talking about and playing his all time fave tracks and ending with JD , Atmosphere? Anyone remember that one? Didn't tape it and the 27/09/87 thing i lost years ago.

1 1 like

Thanks for the recollections of the 27/09/87 thing, Fotz. It might help me to identify it, if I happen to come across it unlabelled on a tape.

I'm not sure about that Hooky thing where he played Atmosphere. Looking through my spreadsheet of stuff I have vs stuff I need, the only thing I've got labelled up as being Hook related on Radio 1 in 1986 is this:

25/10/1986 - 'City To City - Episode 5: Manchester', BBC Radio 1, 25/10/86 (Hook) (60 minutes)

The date seems a bit off, but the length of the programme seems typical of something where he may have been presenting a programme and playing some tunes. Alternatively, there's a reasonable chance that it's a programme I don't have listed.

As regards the length of the list, I know; it's a bit gargantuan. I'm surprised there's that many radio shows that I don't have.

I'm not holding out much hope that this post will result in finding these missing interviews, but it's always worth an ask. However, looking back on this thread, I did get some very nice items from the people on this thread already (thank you all!), so here's hoping that this resurrection, and list of missing items, leads to some hunting down of stuff. I've also posted a similar thread on JD Central.

Fingers crossed...

Could have been a repeat on 25/10/86, who knows. The "City To City" thing rings vague bells, like it was a series and Hook's part was one of them.Looking at Genome's listings for March 1986 , Radio 1 it's Janice Long from 19.30 til 22.00 then Peel so buggered why i recall anything else on around that time of evening in that period.Unless the City To City thing formed the 21.00 til 22.00 section of Janice Long's show around March 1986.I'm sure also Hook played Ride A White Swan.Well anyway, i haven't the energy or time enthusiasm or motivation to think about it any further.

I thought I'd give this a gentle 'bump', just in case anyone has found any radio interviews on tapes. Perhaps during the 'lockdown'.

I've amended my original long list to delete any that I have now acquired. Big thanks to members who have sent me these since I initially posted the list.

In the last few days, thanks to a kind soul on this forum, I managed to replace quite a few of the interviews that I lost (see my original post). I was thrilled with this, and is so nice to have these again.

However, there are still others I'm really keen to replace. Specifically:

17/06/1990 - 'The Bill Shaw Show', NorthSound Radio, Aberdeen, 17/06/90 (Hook) xx/12/1991 - 'Mark Goodier', BBC Radio 1, 12/91 (Morris & Gilbert) 11/01/1992 - BBC Radio 1, 11/01/92 (Wilson) 20/03/1992 - 'Bite The Wax', Radio Scotland, 20/03/92 (Wilson) Late 1992 - 'Mark Goodier', BBC Radio 1, Late 1992 (Morris & Gilbert) 30/12/93 - 'BBC Radio 1, 30/12/93 (Hook presenting) 1993-1994 - 'Cook With Hook' segments on 'Hit The North', BBC Radio 5 Live

So, if anyone has a) any of the ones listed directly above, b) any of the others listed in my main list further up the page or c) any other radio / audio interviews not listed, please get in touch.

I have a tonne of stuff that I'm very willing to share in return.

Perspex, do you have the Radio 1 Saturday Live 9th June 1984 thing where Richard Skinner talks to Mark Johnson and Rob Gretton about Mark's 'Ideal For Living' book? The transcript of it is in Dec's Heaven To Heaven book and i realised i don't think i'd ever heard it.And certainly don't have it.Puzzled how i missed it at the time as i often had Radio 1 on in those days and was always trying to keep an ear out for any New Order stuff on the radio.

Judging by the transcript, Rob was pretty harsh and critical of the book to Mark's face ! Speak yer mind, Rob .Or i'm wondering if it looks harsher in transcript than it actually was.

1 1 like

Yeah. I’ve got it (I might be missing the very end though).

It’s not just the transcript. It’s a pretty uncomfortable interview.

I always used to think that the band and Rob were a bit harsh on Johnson (who was just there it do a job). However, I’ve recently read some fairly unsavoury stuff about Johnson and think perhaps the band were wise to keep him at arm’s length.

Anyway, if you want a copy of the Radio 1 interview, just PM me (same goes for anyone else).

perspexorange wrote: Yeah. I’ve got it (I might be missing the very end though).

Just compared my copy to the transcript in 'From Heaven To Heaven' and it looks like I'm only missing the last couple of sentences.

My version breaks off at:

Rob: "We're supposedly doing a..."

So, there's only the answer to that question, plus one more comment from both Skinner and Gretton, plus Skinner's outro. So not too bad.

Looks like I have some more interview at the start than is in the transcription. I have about 1m25s of the interview prior to where the transcript picks up.

So, I guess what I'm saying in all this is, if you have a complete copy (or at least one that contains the end bit), please let me know. Perhaps we can stitch together a more complete version.

Thanks to a great chap I met on these boards, I've managed to knock off a fair few interviews, especially from the 'golden period' of the 80s / early 90s.

I've now almost recovered all of the interviews I lost. I just need seven more, which I've marked with a (*) on my master list of 'wants' below.

If anyone can help me with either the (*) items or any on the below list, I would be massively grateful.

Thanks!

Just a gentle bump on this thread.

Thanks to a very generous soul, I've managed to strike off another six programmes that were on the above list. I've now amended this to reflect my 'current wants'.

If anyone is able to help out, please get in touch.

Similarly, if anyone is after a radio or TV programme featuring the band, please just drop me a PM. I will probably be able to help you out.

Just a gentle bump, with my amended 'wants' listed above.

Thanks to forum members, I'm ticking these off slowly but surely.

I remember circa 1991 there was a radio one show about indie music and they said, We've kept the best till last with an interview with indie's most successful band, New Order. Turned out to be five minutes with just Morris.

Hmmm. Interesting. I'm not sure I know about that one. I have something logged as:

'Newsbeat', BBC Radio 1, 09/09/91 (Morris) (5 minutes)

It could be that, I guess. Sadly, I don't have it.

Yeah, probably that. You didn't miss much - very short and he actually informed listeners he used to be in JD but was now in NO. Another BBC scoop. There was also a tiny beeb interview with Hooky in 1994 where he said he stayed with Factory cos he was a pisshead. Sometimes they made monumental mistakes; sometimes they made monuments.

Incidentally, is that the Oasis one where they take the piss out of Hooky so he says they can forget about going down the Hassie and they say, 'I wouldn't wanna go down there anyway. It's shit'? I read about that. Not an Oasis fan, but after that I was tempted. I always thought Buzz Gum sounded like Oasis.

Yep - 'Hit The North' on BBC Radio 5, 11/08/93.

I think the full broadcast of this is actually 'lost' (or, at least, not in the hands of fans). I think Oasis fans were looking for it for years, as it contains a very early radio session.

Anyway, it eventually turned up up, but as a partial recording. See this link and description:

"In Lee Henshaw's book "Oasis" (1996) it is said that the BBC has since lost the master tape to this recording.

This recording was transferred from an in-house cassette tape from the bands management, and is not an off-air recording. This means that the DJs (Peter Hook from New Order!) microphone is almost inaudible for the interview, as the . The general sound quality is excellent though.

The session was engineered by Mark Coyle and Ian Eastwood (Stone Roses) at Noel Gallagher's request, as this was their first ever radio session. 'I Will Believe' from this session later got used as a b-side to the 'Supersonic' single, and 'Bring It On Down' was a b-side on the 'Shakermaker' single. The rest is super rare, and has only been sourced from this tape."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nw61DijiKU

So Hooky is basically inaudible, but you can hear the various Hook/Haçienda jibes from about 9:30 onwards.

Obviously i'd be keen to hear the Hooky bits, so if anyone has it, please let me know. Someone must've taped it somewhere... Even if it was just for the wonderful Mark & Lard.

Agree on Buzz Gum. They seemed to be putting a foot onto the Oasis bandwagon there. Another one of the weaker tracks from the album for me is Billy Bones, which sounds like they were going for a Joy Division-style moody dirge. Suspicions were confirmed when I saw them live at The Fillmore in San Francisco on that tour. At the end of them playing that song, Pottsy said "Sorry Ian".

Oh God, did he really say that? Embarrassing. Watching Wings 1977. Can't fathom the hatred for this band. They gathered a stream of hits including a record breaker, the gigs were epic and Band on the Run is cuntender for best solo Beatles album. Awesome

Yes. Another cringeworthy part of the gig was the encore of Warsaw's Failures. Otherwise, the concert was really quite good.

Thanks for that Oasis link. Sadly Hooky is barely audible and I thought they actually said, 'I wouldn't wanna go down there anyway. It's shit,' but I just got 'arsed' (don't take that out of context). Still pretty ballsy considering they were unknown, Hooky had a tough guy reputation and this was the height of that 'most important group since the Beatles' rubbish. Respect.

Yeah - I thought that too. Perhaps it was referenced in an article somewhere and the person relaying the story was doing it from memory.

Yeah but they're still fucking awesome in that clip. Hooky needed taking down. Hadn't done a decent album in fucking years.

Not a radio clip but i was going through a load of old VHS tapes the other day to see if i had anything previously forgotten.Found a recording of the NME awards 2006 ( i was still recording stuff using VHS and a video recorder in 2006?? WTF? But yep, it seems i was!) and found Hooky presenting some award and being his usual arsey self and saying some stuff about how nobody buys records anymore and then presenting the award to Kaiser Chiefs because the actual award winners Suede couldn't be arsed to turn up.Then some idiot singer from The Cribs jumps onto the table (and sustains himself a serious injury in doing so if i remember correctly ) and Russell Brand asks the up their own arses indie music industry hangers on audience who he should actually give the award to or something blah blah blah who cares.Anyway, if you want the clip i have an old VHS player and the technology to transfer it to digital and by means of 21st tech wizadry to whip it across to yers, perspex! Let me know

Many thanks for the offer, Fotz.

I do have a copy of this, but it's pretty poor and, for reasons unknown to me, is in portrait. I'm wondering if it's been filmed by someone off a TV screen using their camera. It might just be me - I'm not very IT savvy when it comes to video file formats. Maybe I could tweak it and make it landscape?

I've uploaded it here:

https://we.tl/t-U0otdQY3B6

Maybe you could take a look and, if you think your copy is better quality and if it isn't too much trouble, I'd love a copy. I'm always looking for upgrades (especially to weirdly formatted things like my version of the clip).

Cheers for the offer either way. Appreciated.

^ My copy maybe a little better than that but not really enough to be worth doing. Wouldn’t make much difference apart from it being in landscape not portrait.

No worries then, Fotz. It's probably not worth the effort.

Following the Countdown footage in NO Spotting (Did Countdown change its name from/to Veronica's Countdown?)...I'm reminded of a couple of NO memories from... when I was a very small boy.

First was a TV memory from about 83 or 84. A Dutch TV show had Bernard and Hooky on. The two of them did a crappy version of BM and I think, another track. This was then shown on UK TV in a couple of separate clips/chunks ("We have footage from Holland"). I think it may have been shown on a late night edition of C4's The Tube. The Tube was usually on around dinner time on a Friday evening. But I remember them doing a late night epsiode so that they could show the "banned" Relax video by Frankie. And they may have done more than one late night episode. Anyone remember this two-man version of NO doing something for Dutch TV?

The other is a radio memory. BBC R1 I reckon. A documentary thing which I think was presented by Janice Long (RIP) in either the late 80's or early 90s. I think I remember Long talking about the name change from JD to NO (with political undertones) and the use of "fascist imagery" created by Saville and that it was "too much" for some people. I also seem to remember a lot of Hooky being used as part of the interview snippets that peppered the documentary. Even back then Hooky seemed to be the 'talky' one.

NO TV performances and radio documentaries seemed so rare to me back then that they're kinda the only ones I remember (along wth BM on TOTPs). So I don't think my mind invented this stuff. Anyone?..

I've never fully got to the bottom of this. As far as I know, 'Countdown' was hosted on a TV channel which was part of the 'Veronica' TV/radio network in the Netherlands.

It may well have been called 'Veronica's Countdown' at some point in time (maybe they shortened the name over time) or it could just be a nickname, i.e 'Countdown' on 'Veronica' effectively.

I've recently got hold of the complete programme from 05/06/83 (the Blue Monday appearance) and the title credits state just 'Countdown'. However, the host introduces it by saying something along the lines of (in Dutch) "Welcome to 'Countdown', pop music by 'Veronica' on TV". Something like that, anyway.

I think this is the two-part radio documentary that was broadcast in 1988 called 'Substance'. There were two parts to this called 'I Remember When We Were Young' (the Joy Division years) and 'Now That We've Grown Up Together' (the New Order years). It was narrated by Janice Long and broadcast on 03/03/88 and 05/03/88 respectively.

Here are the radio listings from the (excellent) BBC Genome site:

There's discussion of the new name and fascist imagery in part 2, around the 14-15 minute mark. If you want to have a listen, just let me know and I'll wing over a copy.

Listening to it just now, this is definitely the interview you're talking about; "too much for some people", Saville discussing imagery etc.

Debaser wrote: Anyone remember this two-man version of NO doing something for Dutch TV?

Wow! No. Never heard of this at all! Really interesting. How on Earth were they able to do this (it needed a fair amount of faffing around with various synths / discs etc.) and, more to the point, why weren't S&G involved? Very strange indeed. I'm really interested in this, as this has completely passed me by. Any other memories?

Thinking about it, they did do 'Blue Monday' plus another track (Age Of Consent) on another TV programme back in the day:

'Switch' on Channel 4 on 01/04/83.

I'm sure you know about this already and it probably isn't the same, but thought I'd mention it in case you weren't aware. I seem to think that 'Switch' was on late at night and, if I remember correctly, had some connection to The Tube (same producers maybe).

However, as you probably know, this was a 'full band' performance. Not just Bernard and Hooky.

Here it is:

Ok, ta. Certainly if you google Veronica's Countdown you get lots of YT suggestions like, Bowie on Veronica's Countdown 1987, U2 on Veronica's Countdown 1982 etc...

Bingo! I wasn't sure if it had been covered by your extensive lists. In fact I was going to mention that I thought it was on a Saturday afternoon, and so it was! Maybe my memory isn't too bad after all! If I had more hard-drive room I'd seek a copy from you for nostalgic reasons. Maybe someone needs to put these things on YouTube or Soundcloud? (not me though, I couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery!)

Well I did say it was a crappy version of BM! I don't think it was a 7 minute one either. I remember telling a school friend about it and that the "guitar guy" looked a bit tough in his biker jacket. So Hooky must have been wearing the leather jacket. I don't think they were on a stage, just a studio floor, mostly in darkness apart from Barney and Hooky in close proximity under lights, surrounded by lots of synths. Possibly no studio audience.

Hmm, I'd forgotten about the existence of Switch. Not sure if I saw that performance at the time. But no leather jacket for Hooky and eh 'too much' S&G for it to be the performance I'm thinking of. Also I'm pretty sure it was Dutch/European. In fact the first time the Countdown footage appeared on YT I kinda expected it to be the Barney/Hooky thing, but it wasn't.

^ Never heard of Barney and Hooky just the two of them doing BM live on some tv show.Doesn't ring any bells .Not to say it never happened but i never heard of it.

I always think of Countdown as Veronica's Countdown because old Video and cassette lists for NO back in the day listed it as Veronica's Countdown.

I remember the 2 part Radio 1 thing called Substance but not heard it for years. It was the late great Janice Long who presented (RIP) ? All i remember is one part was on a Saturday early afternoon.

I vaguely remember Switch when it was on tv but for some reason i never watched it, only that i was aware it was a music show that was on Fridays (teatime slot?) when The Tube was off air.I always watched The Tube but i never watched Switch.Odd eh? So i never saw NO's performance on it until i got hold of a VHS tape of it from a work colleague a couple of years later

i'm really intrigued by this now. Gonna do some checking around, but this is completely unknown to me (which is, if I do say so myself, fairly incredibly, given my penchant for anally-retentive JD/NO facts [:d] ). Wow! I wanna see this now.

I will say though that, every now and again, something does turn up that I'm unaware of and these are mostly from outside of the UK. One thing I've been after for years(!) is an interview with Bernard, Hooky and Rob at a charity football match that was on a programme called 'Villa Tempo' on Belgian TV on 27/01/86. It's proved pretty elusive (I did get an audio only version of it last year, but it's not really the same - I really want to see the three of them playing footy!).

Given that the 'Blue Monday' performance you mention is live, and given that it's a bit of a 'car crash' of a performance, it seems incredible that this footage hasn't appeared on YouTube yet. Fingers crossed that it soon does.

HaHa. Yeah. I know what you mean, although I did kind of love that performance. I always used to find some of Steve's interviews fairly embarrassing, with him wittering on about pizzas or something similarly inane Now I find them endearing when watching back.

One other cringeworthy interview that springs to mind is that Bernard/Hooky interview from 'Les Enfants du Rock' where the former is basically really pissed off and completely switched off from the conversation. He looked like he was going to hit the interviewer... once he'd got over his hangover.

I recently found an interview from New Zealand TV where the moronic interviewer pretty much accuses them of being Nazis and juxtaposed that with being the only white act on a black label (Qwest, presumably). Very crass and pretty painful to watch. Hooky and Steve (mainly the former) had the good grace to not rise to the obvious baiting.

Yeah. Me too. That had completely passed me by until around the same time as you. 'Musik Convoy' on 16/04/84. I don't remember it being traded amongst fans back in the 80s and 90s (else I'd have had a copy), so only really hit 'trading circles' around the time of YouTube etc. I've got a number of 'trade lists' from back in the day and I don't think any of them list it.

Yep - that was also 'Countdown' (27/04/93). Their only other appearance on that programme, as far as I know (although they definitely repeated a clip of 'Blue Monday' on at least one other show).

By your description, I'm just reminded of this performance, also from Dutch / Belgian TV ('Pop Elektron', 25/05/84):

Hooky in leather jacket; Mostly in darkness; Studio floor; No studio audience etc.

I know this is a performance of 'Thieves Like Us', not 'Blue Monday', but just wondered whether they actually recorded a version of Blue Monday too, but this either wasn't shown on that programme or just hasn't leaked to the internet yet. Maybe 'The Tube' got hold of both tracks and showed both of them at some point. Just a thought.

It doesn't really explain why The Other Two wouldn't be present for 'Blue Monday' though.

It certainly sounds like a completely separate performance. Man, I really want to see this now.

Debaser wrote: Following the Countdown footage in NO Spotting (Did Countdown change its name from/to Veronica's Countdown?)...I'm reminded of a couple of NO memories from... when I was a very small boy.

Anyone?..

Considering that Blue Monday required a change of floppy discs during the song back then, it's unlikely a two man version would be possible. This is in addition to the synth bits The Other Two would be performing. Unless someone offstage was doing these things (they weren't miming back then), I say it's more likely the cameras were merely focusing on Bernard and Hooky, and that's what stayed in your memory.

Good effort. Just erase the other two (!) and you might have me convinced.

The bit I'm sure of is that the presenter said they had two members of the band in to perform - and it wasn't S&G (cos one of the performers was the singer and the other one had a bass guitar, a beard and a leather jacket) If I've got something wrong here it could be the track. I'm not saying I have got the track wrong, but I distinctly remember the (European/Dutch) presenter telling us which members of NO were there to perform. Maybe they only performed BM up to the point where you have to change the floppy. Also it wasn't a live broadcast. Could they have recorded two takes: pre and post floppy change?

I've done some asking around and it's been suggested to me that there was a Dutch clip shown on an episode of 'The Tube'. The episode in question was the 'A Midsummer Night's Tube' programme from 24/06/83, which was a four-hour marathon programme. This was presumably (at least partially) broadcast later than the usual slot, which is line with your memory, Debaser.

However, it's also been suggested that this was the 'Countdown' clip.

Sadly, I can't find the episode online. I've asked the guy who's posted a load of 'Tube' episodes to YouTube if he could post this, but no response as yet.

It might not be the same thing as what you've mentioned but, at the very least, it would be good for you to see it (including how the clip was introduced etc.) and rule it out once and for all.

Sounds plausible.

You think/hope he might have stuff on tape or hard drive that's never been on YT?

Sure! Hit me!

BTW You know the way we've seen one quarter of NO do The Happy One, but it probably isn't as good as all 4 quarters of NO? May I also suggest that half of NO also isn't as good as a whole NO? If this clip does turn up, I don't want you to get too excited...

Oh re 'A Midsummer Night's Tube', there is this choppy trailer for June 1984. And at 2:24 they mention Frankie's Relax (at 1am cos it's so naughty!). No mention of NO in the trailer (Is that Lesley Ash at 1:48?). However the Wikipedia page for The Tube does list NO as one of The Tube's "selected performers", near the bottom. Do we have any hive-mind knowledge of NO performing on The Tube? (oh yeah we do in '86) Oh also Tony Wilson is mentioned for the 2006 radio revival. If NO had played live/session on there we'd know wouldn't we? The Wikipedia page also says "In July 2008 ITN (rights holder for The Tube) signed a deal with MUZU TV to make The Tube available online". [read]

Well he must have access to the Channel 4 archive, as the episodes he’s posted have definitely come from archives rather than off-air broadcasts (based on the time clocks etc.). He’s posted all the regular episodes (or pretty much anyway) sequentially by season. There’s a possibility he wasn’t aware of the one-off ‘specials’. Hopefully, if he sees my comment, he might try and dig out the episode from the archive. If he still has access, of course.

Think there were Midsummer editions in both 1983 and 1984. I think I saw the opening for the ‘83 edition online earlier today and, again, they don’t list New Order as being on it. However, as it was 4 hours of stuff, I guess they probably couldn’t list everything. Maybe they only listed the stuff recorded by ‘The Tube’ and didn’t really promote the additional footage (from Dutch TV).

Who knows, eh? All speculation at this point. If I manage to find a copy, I’ll send you a link.

There was also one in 1986.I distinctly remember because The Smiths played live on it and i remember watching them perform Panic .First time i heard that song and Morrissey seemed to repeat "Hang the DJ!" over and over forever. So much so that my mum, bless her, said "Does that man ever sing anything else than hang the DJ?" .Not that this helps in this search for the Barney and Hooky only performance of BM.

Ah. I didn't know that, Fotz.

...Actually that guy has posted it. It's an almost five-hour 'EuroPop' special:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enH12\_39kr4 (The Smiths on at the 33min mark)

And, your mum was right - he really doesn't like that DJ!

Interestingly, the band was a five-piece at the time. I'm guessing that's Craig Gannon, with them (I'm not very familiar with the guy). My word, though - they were pretty wonderful, weren't they? Lovely version of TIALTNGO. Marr is a god.

Incidentally, considering this YouTuber is not averse to posting the 4+hour 'Tube' specials, there's a reasonable chance he might post the 'Midsummer' specials at some point.

Oh the 86 one was more a "Euro Tube" thing , rather than a midsummers ?

There was a bit of rivalry between The Smiths and New Order in the 80s, would it be fair to say? I was a bit torn with it all because i did love a lot of The Smiths stuff.I bought their Queen Is Dead album upon release in summer 86 and absolutely played it to death for months. All a long time ago now but Morrissey was a massive, massive icon to a lot of people back in the day.If he was on the front cover of NME you just had to buy it to see what he had to say.Yes i recall Craig Gannon being in the band for a while, think as a second guitarist.I never saw The Smiths live but I went to a small festival in Perry Park, Birmingham in summer 2019 which included on the bill Johnny Marr (along with The Coral and Doves) and he played a lot of Smiths classics including There Is A Light. He was bloody good.

When I was a teen in the 80s, I hated The Smiths (which seems like heresy to me, now). I was just put off by Morrissey being contrary and generally being a bit of a dick. I just couldn't get past that.

I was, in a word, foolish.

It wasn't until 'Electronic' that I decided to give them another try and was then blown away. My focus was originally on Marr's music, and tried to just 'go along with' Moz's singing and lyrics. Then, before I knew it, I was loving everything about them.

I haven't really looked back since and think they were a remarkable band. So many incredible songs.

I've also learned since then to separate art from artist. Which is just as well, considering Moz's current outlook on things.

hmm... i think i struggle at times separating the art from the artist.I can still listen to The Smiths but i am, unfortunately, conscious when doing so about what an arse Morrissey is these days. But what if an artist did an unspeakable thing like being found guilty of murder or something? Could i still listen to their music then? It'd be a tough one i'm sure. Not saying Morrissey is going to go out and murder anyone, obvs! I mean who on earth these days owns or listens to Gary Glitter's music??

I read Morrissey's autobiography when it was published.Enjoyed it , or most of it.I think it was after he wrote it that he started becoming an arse. Billy Bragg said of Morrissey a while back "There was a light but now it's gone out".

Well, I’ve said for a number of years, I can separate art from artist, but if I was a lostprophets fan, I think I’d struggle.

However shit Morrissey is these days, he’s not Ian Watkins.

I think we established that it was definitely not Jo Whiley and doubted whether it was on Radio 1. Anybody have any further thoughts as to who the interviewer might be? Her voice does sound familiar.

I'm wondering if it was an interview for a magazine and this is just the interviewer's tape for reference purposes. However, there's quite a few 'fan questions' read out, which might point more to a broadcast interview.

Nice mention of Hooky's 'finger licking' habit that enraged Bernard so much. :-D

Thanks for this, quite a good interview Bernard gets quite personal in places. If it was the BBC I thought it might be Janice Long at first but now I'm thinking Mary Ann Hobbs who had an evening show around that time. Also noticed when I searched that WIM.net seem to mention it on their newsroom section, wonder if the general public questions were submitted through them? All a complete guess though really!

Been doing some digging and checked the copies I have of the old Ceremony mailing list.

It talks about the Jo Whiley interview on Friday 13/11/98 on it and lists a few things that aren’t featured in the interview posted to YouTube (inc. playing tracks from Reading ‘98). So we know it’s not the Whiley interview from the radio broadcast.

However, there is this (posted to the mailing list on 13/11/98):

“Just noticed that the Beeb site has Bernard answering some quesions on the Jo Whiley show.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/reception/reception.html”

This appears to be the interview in question. So this interview is likely connected to the Whiley interview.

I reckon then, that Bernard came into the studio to be interviewed by Jo Whiley. Then, perhaps, one of the show’s researchers did a follow up interview with him at the same time, to answer some fan questions and to post to the BBC website. Stuff that wasn’t covered on the main show.

Unless that interviewer is actually Whiley (it really doesn’t sound like her).

Mary Ann Hobbs is from Sheffiled and Janice Long was from Liverpool. This interviewer has a southern English accent doesn't she? Bernard sounds a bit wierd here too, almost as though this is from a cassette tape that's playing a bit too fast. If I were to guess at anyone I would say Annie Nightingale, but I'm not confident in that guess.

It's probably someone obscure. I mean, does anyone remember Ro Newton from Whistle Test? Thought not, but she was a presenter on there. I don't think this is Ro Newton either though. If someone ever comes up with the answer, I suspect there will be a collective shrug and a "who??" like you get at football when an unknown sub gets announced for the opposition around the 70 minute mark.

As for the BBC website, It only started in December 1997. I'd be surprised if they were uploading audio interviews with Bernard Sumner within a year of launch...

I agree that this is definitely not Janice Long or Mary Ann Hobbs. Not sure about Annie Nightingale, as I’m fairly unfamiliar with her voice.

According to the internet archive of that webpage, it says that the interview was available to listen to (via RealPlayer, so may have been streamable, rather than for download):

“To hear Bernard's answers along with the full Website interview, you'll need a Realplayer.”

Yes, i agree with Debaser, the lady does have a vaguely similar voice to Annie Nightingale. However, i'd bet my house that it is definitely NOT her. I am quite familiar with Annie Nightingale's voice as i used to listen to her Radio 1 show a lot back in the 80s.The interviewer simply has that same regional tone as Annie. I couldn't say what that region is exactly other than it's southern. It's obviously not northern. But yeah, if we do ever solve who it is it'll be a big "Who?" and a shrug.

Not Miranda Sawyer is it?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

It kind of sounds a bit like either Pip Dann (MTV Europe VJ, who's actually a New Zealander but doesn't have that strong an accent) or Sunie Fletcher (used to review for Record Mirror, but also did some work on 1980s satellite TV - Rox Box etc.). I'm not convinced it's either of them though.

As D & F say, it's probably someone fairly unknown. Possibly either a music journalist that doesn't normally present or a researcher/secondary presenter on Jo Whiley's show (similar to someone on Steve Wright's posse kind of thing).

I don't think it's Miranda either because she's from Wilmslow near Manchester and has a mild northern accent... Thanks for the guess though, Mr Discog.

Well I stand corrected! I vaguely remember "you'll need RealPlayer" on t'internet from about 20 years ago.

She still has a weekend show on BBC R1 playing dance tunes at crazy O'clock in the morning (link). I sometimes download it on to the Sounds app. Her speech sounds like she may have false teeth trouble; she seems to struggle with her S's and T's. Did she sound like that back in the 80s? I do remember her (Sunday nights after the Top 40) but I woulld usually only hear a few minutes of her show.

^ I remember she still had a late night Radio 1 show in the early 2000s but was gobsmacked to learn a year or two back she still has. She ain't giving up spinning them tunes. Yes i've heard her talk these days and i'd hazard she has false teeth. She didn't talk like that back in the 80s.

Listened again and i'm leaning towards that theory, yep.The audio quality isn't great or completely clear but i don't think that's anything to do with the quality of the mp3 file. I get the impression the lady recorded it on her dictaphone or something. It's not a recording that sounds clear enough for radio.

Hmmm. I seem to have found this (thanks to the same person who provided me with the OGWT footage on the other thread).

Or, at least, I think I have. I'll need to get it sent to Debaser for confirmation.

Managed to get both the 1983 and 1984 'midsummer' specials of The Tube and I think it's on the 1983 programme, broadcast on 24/06/83. This does feature clips from the 'Countdown' programme.

It does seem to follow Debaser's description. It is from 'Dutch TV' and is introduced in that way, by the same presenter that hosted 'Countdown'. It is 'Blue Monday', and although Steve & Gillian do appear, they are 'blink, and you'll miss them'. You can see their fingers on keyboards throughout and then, right at the very end, they appear on screen for a second. Bernard and Hooky are featured much more prominently.

The clip is only about a minute long.

Incidentally, I actually had this clip on an old video tape but didn't know where it was from. I had always assumed it was from a later 'highlights show' of Countdown, shown a few weeks after the original performance. Even if it isn't the same programme Debaser mentions, at least I know that my clip is from 'The Tube'.

Also, interestingly, this is taken from an alternate take of Blue Monday; not the main one or the one that was on the Reelin In The Years YouTube channel. I think the Countdown YouTube channel released this third take in its entirety a year or so ago.

Just gone through the 1984 midsummer special and can't see anything New Ordery in it.

Yep. 11 year old me must have only registered Bernard & Hook from that short clip. This is the one. Not a 2 man NO after all. My bad!

The funny thing is, as I already had the clip in my archives (but didn't know what it was), in theory, we called've solved this ages ago. [:d]

Going back to the topic earlier in this thread about who the lady is interviewing Bernard in the 90s and if it was Jo Whiley or someone else.I'd concluded previously that it wasn't her despite the mp3 i obtained some years ago labelled that it was. Anyway, i've been listening to a podcast series on BBC Sounds recently about Britpop and it features some old mid 90s Radio 1 clips of Jo Whiley talking and back then it seems her voice was quite different to what is these days and almost like the unknown lady in the 90s Bernard interview. So maybe it was in fact her afterall. Coupled with the sound quality being slightly mudddy on that old 90s Bernard interview.

Fraid I don't have any of the missing interviews, but I've got some to add. I was going through an old live tape list, prompted by a post on the JDC website, and found a reference to these. What's listed is the only info I've got.

Thanks for listing these. I can confirm that all of the above exist. My list was purely ones I'm looking for, having pulled details of these from various sources (old trade lists, websites etc.).

Just a few points of interest:

The 29/06/84 one I think actually occurred on 28/06/84, but the rest of the dates listed look correct (although we're missing the complete date for the Newsbeat interview).

Interestingly, that 'Radio Saunne' thing took me ages to research as I couldn't find a radio station of that name anywhere on the internet. Knew the band were in Rennes on that date, so I think myself and a mate did some digging based on that. Turns out that the station was actually called 'Radio Savane'. All trade lists I've seen call it 'Radio Saunne', but I guess that the same tape of that interview was being traded and passed between fans and they just copied the error between each other.

The 04/08/85 'Toronto TV' thing was mostly shared amongst fans as audio only of a TV show. However, I've since managed to find a video version of it. i believe it was from 'MuchMusic', which was the Canadian equivalent of MTV, I think. Not sure which show on that channel it was or who the presenter is. If anyone knows, please let me know.

I've decided to upload all of these interviews in a 'perspexorange' grab-bag. There's some quite nice interviews here. Links (two of them, as the files totalled over 2Gbs) are good for a few days:

https://we.tl/t-ivYFgIH36A https://we.tl/t-e5VGBt2t9a

If anyone comes to this thread late and the links are dead, just let me know and I'll re-up them.

Also, if anyone has a more complete copy of 26/10/86 (to include BLT video) or 31/10/86 (to include the end of the interview, which appeared on a transcript in an issue of Paradise fanzine, so someone must have a copy), please let me know.

Daws - any chance you could share a scan of the trade list that you identified these on (and any other trade lists you have in respect of JD/NO)? I find these things fascinating time capsules and, on occasion, I've even spotted things on them that I've never heard of before.

PS Please folks, if any of you have any audio or video tapes of interviews etc., have a hunt through and see if you have any of my 'wants'.

Remember, tapes won't last forever and we need to get this stuff saved for posterity. I'm trying to pull together as complete an archive of JD/NO interviews as I can for this purpose. So, if you have anything rare, please let me know. Additionally, if anyone is hunting down a specific radio or TV programme, please just get in touch with me here (or via my YouTube channel) and I'll help you out, if I can. Chances are, I'll have it.
