Wasn't there supposed to be a CD single release for "Be A Rebel"?

Yeah, according to the official release:

Maybe they gave it up. CD singles have been in decline for years now

I was always a CD Single fan - even during the ridiculous Republic era but think I'm done with the format now.

I would've bought the BaR CDS had it come out at the start or shortly thereafter but I've now downloaded the Single/Edit and 1st bunch of remixes from B&S.

I've passed on the External Remixes Part1of2 and prob won't bother with Remixes 2of2 or a CDS either as this release has now gone on far too long enough by half.

There was supposed to be :

  • Remixes part2
  • Reeder’s remixes
  • CD single

I think MR stated somewhere that he expected to be part of remixespart2

Which (to me) is a shame, as I'd been looking forward to his take(s).

I'm not really fussed about CDs any more and I used to be a big advocate as I'm sure a few on here still are.

My take is the vinyl is great because you get a large copy of the artwork, which you can hang on your wall if you want. Mute vinyl also tends to come with a code to download a digital copy in Hi-res which is often better quality than the CD itself. When I got the recent ACR album bundle I simply redeemed the 24-bit files from the vinyl code which meant I didn't even need to unseal the CD (it remains sealed, on a shelf but was a part of the bundle).

CD seems to be starting to become pretty redundant and I guess will continue to do so.

Pet Shop Boys are still pretty loyal to it "as a medium" given their ascendancy was during the CD boom of the 80s. The last CD single I bought was a PSB one ("I Don't Wanna" I think).

Still waiting for "Part 2" of the remixes, which I assume is coming to digital services soon-ish?

The single was intended to promote the Unity Tour. With the tour dates pushed to later this year, Mute is probably holding the CD single(s) back, hoping to get a little promotion bump for the gigs when they finally happen.

To be honest, holding back a CD single of remixes long available on both digital services and a 12" would be an unusual move. I think it is more likely they intended to put out a CD with the 12" and digital but pandemic logistics caused it to fall by the wayside. Slinging up Hi-res files on the usual services and a stream to Spotify is probably cheaper than firing up a CD plant for a niche number of orders. Vinyl is obviously in a league of its own and has been for 10 or so years now "Premium Limited Coloured Edition" product marketing and all that. Could be wrong, obviously but that's what it seems like to me.

If you're right, it will be interesting to see if Mute USA issue any CDs. I don't believe they did for the Music Complete-era singles, they were all EU only (CD I mean, I know the US got a green Restless 12").

I'd quite like to see the second set of BAR remixes especially if Reeder's is in there. He has a solid track record with remixing Barney-related stuff, including Bad Lieutenant over a decade ago.

Is the E.E.R. live album being released via Mute or Warners?

If Mute, perhaps they're tying it into that.

Andy wrote: Is the E.E.R. live album being released via Mute or Warners?

Actually, Google brings back differing results... some say Mute, others have a Warners' catalogue number. Confusing much?

Interesting as NOMC15 was originally self-released through Bandcamp/Live Here Now and then came out on Mute in the end (STUMM420).

New Order + Liam Gillick: So It Goes.. also came out on Mute (STUMM450).

Wonder why E.E.R. has reverted to Warners? I'm wondering if this was the reason it was delayed so long...

2 2 likes

It's not being promoted on Mute's official site.

2 2 likes

I zoomed in on the product shot of the 2CD for sale on the New Order Store. The outer ring of text on the disc features "LC14666" which is Warner Music so mystery solved.

Unusual though. All previous releases, certainly anything featuring Tom Chapman in the line-up has come out on Mute. Warners is traditionally reserved for the Hooky era stuff.

Interesting.

Over on the E.E.R. thread there was a link posted at the time of the announcement. It had links to Amazon for lots of different countries.

On each Amazon page it lists the label as Rhino or Warners (in one case both names). Rhino seems to be the most common.

But yes, considering Mute is their current label it's a surprise that they've "gone back" to the old one.

Are Rhino better at fancy packaging??

2 2 likes

Since Rhino didn't put out So It Goes, maybe they asked for a live album, too. Could be a contractual thing for their working relationship. Could just be a gesture of goodwill on New Order's part. I'm sure the band retain all the rights and master recordings at this point, and are just licensing them to Rhino for manufacture and distribution.

The band own their live recordings so they can be licensed to whoever.

The Be A Rebel stuff will be announced soon. Fear not.

Ok great, looking forward to the remixes pt 2.

Had to chuckle recently when I noticed a few commenters on YouTube have Bernard down as singing “it’s a funny affair” instead of “ it’s a family affair” 😄

Reminds me of how some of us were all angsty over the cheese factor of "being a rebel" and how aligned we were with young Barney. Now old Barney's lyrics have taken a more, as he describes them, "observational" turn.

Also - I'm amazed interviews like this were airing in the UK during that period. With no internet and only 8-week old snippets from NME/MM to go by, NO's renowned "anonymous mystique" possibly seemed more pronounced to us.

I mean, he was out there literally disclosing how many pairs of socks he wears a day. ;)

(Why so many...?)

Tell me about it... I totally dislike vinyl, so I ended up getting the 12" assuming there would be no CD single this time.

I really like both Reeder remixes - they put me in mind of the R&R CD back in the day, which contained a number of remixes, each bringing something different to the party but still pretty faithful to the original.

I may have to get the CDS after all, if it bundles these together.

I first knew of him as a producer and remixer of Bloc Party, and he's also worked with Maximo Park (who supported NO at Wembley arena '06). He's a man of many talents. For me the surprise is the other way around - that he ended up working with Adele.

It's been fucking years but I think it was the Glimmers 12" that didn't impress me. A bleached-out, unnecessarily elongated take that sounded more like an early demo than an official mix. Shanya Twaine can't conjugate verbs. That don't impress me much.

Oh I seeee.Right , yeah I get what you’re saying. My memory a bit vague on Paul Epworth and could only recall he was associated with producing Adele albums.I guess it is indeed odd to think he went from producing the likes of Bloc Party to an uber mainstream artist. A man of many talents then, yes.

Regarding the Glimmers remixes on the 12” , I like the shuffly crisp drumming . There’s also the Glimmers Dub on one of the 12”x 12” releases. Not to be confused with Glimmers Dub Version on the Krafty 12”. Glimmers Dub Version and Glimmers Dub are 2 different remixes. Glimmers Dub has a straightforward and urgent beat whereas Glimmers Dub Version on the Krafty 12” is more shuffly.

Also always liked Morel’s Pink Noise Vocal remix.

Has Baker gone for a 1963 '95 approach? It sounds very "clear" for want of a better word. You can really hear the backing vox, though I'm not sure that's particularly a bonus.

As time has gone by, I have forgiven the "BM/Kraftwerk" parts of the Maceo Plex mix. And I have appreciated the sort of synth-horn elements and the overall bite/toughness that Maceo's mix added to the track. Paul Woolford's effort was decent too (full length mix surely still to come ...Oh a 6 min NO edit), especially once the synth bass gets going.

But with the other mixes I have the same issue that I had with the original track; it's a bit too polite, too "Radio 2" for me. I want the remixes to add a harder edge, and I don't think this one does (but it might work at the Benidorm outdoor discos this summer) So it remains Maceo + Woolford for me.

Bleep has the 2x12" clear vinyl and the CD single listed for £16.49 and £10.49 respectively. The cheapest prices I can find at the moment for UK/EU.

I think you could have bought Music Complete for the same kinda prices...

Wow, not released physically until 27 August - almost a four month wait!

Anyone know which version of Bernard's Renegade Mix + Renegade Instrumental appears on the black 12" vinyl released on 27 November last year?

I have the dove grey one, which has his first versions (missing the "Hooky" guitar solos in each), but given the black vinyl was released a couple of weeks after this, I wonder if Bernard's updated version of both mixes made it onto this vinyl? If not, then the updated versions of both those mixes will remain as digital/CD only, with no vinyl release. Albeit his "final" 'Outlaw' mix makes it onto the new clear double vinyl 12" release - which is a third interpretation of essentially the same mix.

I’ll go for the x2 clear vinyl and the CD. Not fussed about the tee. August though eh? That’s a few weeks short of a year since the single was first released ( to streaming) . Talk about stringing 1 (one) song out.

I was reading the following Twitter thread this morning, which had input from some labels, talking about a current lead time of around 4-8 months on vinyl production here in the UK at the moment, which might explain the August release date:

https://twitter.com/dada_drummer/status/1389383977111281670?s=19

Doesn't bode well for the 'Low-life' boxed set coming out in 2021, even if the current and former band members can all agree the content speedily.

Yeah, I couldn't be arsed this time around. One year and yet another live DVD on is extracting the urine. And after the 1993 - 1995 experience... Mind you, I'll probably check out Arthur Baker. All the remixers will have variations and other attempts that won't be released, Mark is putting it out himself I think. There will also be instrumentals of all of them, which may find their way out digitally.

I have listened to every mix of this song, from the original through all the remixes, and I just don't see the point of any of them aside from the Maceo Plex mix. The rest of them just move around the various elements, and don't really improve on what started off sounding like a Bad Lieutenant one-off. I had hopes (misplaced given his post 86 work with the band) for the Arthur Baker version. But at least the Plex mix is interesting and goes in some different more experimental directions. I wasn't familiar with him but checked out his stuff after listening to his version of BAR--quite liked "Cinemax" and could envision an alternate reality where NO was more electronically experimental again. But then maybe we wouldn't have Tutti Fruti which is my favorite track since Technique and one of my top ten in general. Can't wait for the next proper full length. Go City

Speaking of what Be A Rebel sounds like... Way back in 1989 I remember thinking that Run sounded like John Demver. I had been subjected to his greatest hits in the family car from about the age of 11, so was very familiar with (some of) his stuff. I think I must be the only NO fan who wasn't surprised when legal action followed.

In one of Hooky's instagram chats he said there are teams of people who check simlarities for songs. Anf there's a rule that if there's somethibg like 7 or more notes out of every 12 that are the same, then there's a case for plagiarism.

Anyway I haven't counted the notes, but I think Be A Rebel sounds like this Coldplay song. Really quite a lot.

My CD arrived today.

Pretty nice packaging. Triple gatefold sleeve. Silver cover sticker.

It's 'oversized', being about 1/3rd more than the average CD single case. Which is nice to look at, but will be annoying to store (won't fit a CD rack).

It also came with a separate Mute logo silver sticker, which was nice. I've said it before, but I'm glad that New Order are on Mute now. No, they're not Factory, but they're the next best thing.

Haven't played the CD yet. To be honest, I bought it because of compulsion to buy NO items. I can't see me ever playing all the mixes back to back. Still, a nice item to have.

BTW, in case anyone is interested, the 'Paul Woolford Remix New Order Edit' on the CD is different from the 'Paul Woolford Remix Edit' that was on the digital 'Remixes, Part 1' release.

6:41 on the CD, 4:07 on the digital release. Not sure what the differences are though, as still ain't listened to it yet.

Also, the two Bernard Renegade mixes appear to be the 'newer' versions (as expected), rather than the older version on the original 12".

<<>>

So, by my reckoning then, there are currently four remixes that are not on the CD:

Bernard's Renegade Mix (Vinyl version) 6:34 Bernard's Renegade Instrumental (Vinyl version) 6:35 Paul Woolford Remix Edit (4:07) Maceo Plex Edit (5:26)

I actually very much like the JakoJako and Melawati remixes. Melawati's Has a Burial and Bicep dark electro feel, and JakoJako's remix reminds me of early 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92' era Aphex Twin. Not likely to appeal to those who prefer New Order remixes to retain the structure and content of the original songs, but these break up the endless other remixes quite well on the CD and 2 x 12".

How have you heard em already? VPN?

*EDIT* D'oh that was a silly question; you probably just received the remixes in the post today/Thursday like Perspex Orange did. Well, actually today has just turned Friday now, so the videos I embedded a few posts above can indeed now be played.

These two previously unheard remixes are certainly very 21st Century.

JakoJako's has a nice sort of surging moodiness to it, using bits of the original guitar with subtle hints of acid. I think this might be refered to as "vibes". It does kinda feel like an edit though, I thought it would be longer and eh, go further.

Melawati's remix really chops up the vocal. It also seems to pitch Bernard's voice down so that he sounds uncannily like Damon Albarn. The repeated use of "take a look at yourself" again and again does start to jar for me. In fact the only other line used is "and I want to know". But yes I can hear the Burial/Bicep type production.

JakoJako's mix probably appeals to me more out of thee two; it's too bad it isn't longer. Incidentally I'm liking some of her other productions too. And as a bonus, she's kinda easy on the eye (cheesy comment alert).

As for CD Prices (in the UK) I came up with:

Amazon: 11.99 + 3.99 = £15.98 Total (can't find cheaper postage unless I sign up to Prime) Mute: 10.00 + 3.49 = £13.49 Total Piccadilly 10.99 + 1.66 = £12.65 Total Norman Records 10.50 + 4.99 = £15.49 Bleep 10.49 + 2.09 = £12.55 Drift: 10.99 + 1.50 = 12.49 Total

I went for Picadilly Records - not quite the cheapest option but they've been good before, and only a few pennies more than Drift (who?) and Bleep.

Taken quite a new liking to the Paul Woodhouse remix new order edit, though is there a new bit to the intro on this one over the previous release version? Can’t remember now. JakoJako mix is pretty cool and tasteful though yes like Debaser said it could have done with being a bit longer . Melawati mix yes has a bit of a Bicep thing and I get what you’re saying D about the vocal pitch a bit Damon Albarn. Not sure I’m hearing any Burial or Aphex Twin in those JakoJako and Melawati mixes

Actually the first time I’ve heard the Arthur Baker mix as I hadn’t bothered clicking the YouTube link months ago. It’s possibly my least favourite though, just found it uninspiring.Mark Reeder’s Dirty Devil mix is alright I suppose if you want something a bit faster and livelier.

Paul Woolford (aka "Special Request"). Yes this longer edit seems to be even more BLT-ish than the shorter 4 minute edit we heard previously.

Be a Rebel (Paul Woolford Remix New Order Edit)

For anyone wondering what I meant by BAR sounding like Coldplay's Viva La Vida (embedded on previous page), I think this mix demonstrates best what I meant. Try singing the "when I rule the world" part of Viva La Vida over the intro below from 0.45 to 1.30.

New Order - Be A Rebel (Mark Reeder's Cheeky Devil Remix)

Thanks. I either didn't know about this one or had completely forgotten about it.

Yep - I can totally see what you mean.

6:41 on the CD, 4:07 on the digital release. Not sure what the differences are though, as still ain't listened to it yet.

*Almost* solves the mystery of which mix Pete Tong played on Radio One last December.

Recall at the time there were some catchy beefed-up-house-piano-solo-then-vocoder-into-drums elements we hadn't heard before. These are present at 4:05 of the 'Paul Woolford Remix New Order Edit'.

The broadcast sequence doesn't exactly match the remix, though. Possibly just Tong looping/mashing up the 'New Order Edit' (unless there's still a full 'Paul Woolford Remix' out there somewhere).

Woolford, sorry my bad. Yeah definitely a bit more BLT in there

So many remixes for such a middling song. And this is probably what they'll bow out with. 🙄

Agreed. The past year has the feel of a phased retirement. I know there is the PSB tour in Sept 2022, but been nothing to get excited about for years or lure me back to seeing them live in decent venues (not outdoor parks).

2022 is 45 years as a performing band (the first Warsaw gig was 29 May 1977). Not many bands make it that far. It would be a nice, neat way to wrap things up.

Sounded fairly decent in its live debut.... Barney's remix was a good choice. Arguably the best version?

Pretty cool bass. [blackeye]

Glad the song got a live outing - haven't played the YouTube link yet, but yes, Barney's Renegade Mix is by far and above the best best version. A classic New Order 12" mix - love that long extended outro. Not fond of his further modified "Outlaw" mix - that felt a bit busy and messy.

I think I've figured out what bugs me about the live versions of GIAUE, WFTSC and now Be A Rebel.

In ye olden days, there was a lot of variety in the programed drum parts. Think about that majestic synth jam at the end of The Perfect Kiss, with kicks and snares that cut through the mix, 16th note hi-hats, handclaps, and bongos (which they've finally added back into the live mix, a la Education Entertainment Recreation). It felt weighty, like something you could grab on to.

I know current remix trends have everything sounding slick and slippery, with loops instead of programmed drums, but they feel totally limp live, which makes them seem to drag on forever. It's a full minute and half before Barney starts to sing on Be A Rebel, and there's not enough variation in the song to justify that long of an intro.

Then look at something like Plastic, which was an instant classic, and has so much going on that it never feels too long. It's because they're playing the song proper, and not a remixed version of it, which is generally dumbed-down for a dance floor.

Blue Monday wasn't a remix, it was an 7-minute song. TPK was a 9-minute song. Shep Pettibone did fantastic remixes for BLT and True Faith, but those songs are classics because of the original versions, not the remixed versions.

New Order's reputation as a dance band didn't come from their remixes, it came from their songs you could easily dance to. I wish they'd drop the remix elements and play some of the old songs (like True Faith) they way they were written.

Very good point. There's probably a reason why Rebel was left off the album.

The Richard X mix live version of Bizarre Love Triangle is fantastic, but I would still prefer a return to something closer to the LP version, with no vocals on the outro.

I personally enjoy both Richard X and Planet Funk remixes (and their live arrangements) very much... have serious reservations regarding the current version of Temptation, tho. And it isn't a remix. The intro is pointless to me.

Shep Pettibone's BLT is horrible, especially the Hookless take, and his TF sounded good at the time but has now dated far worse than the original (cf. Conomfusarsion). But I know what you mean. The early tracks were written long and then edited down, as opposed to being normal length and then extended. In fact NO were one of the first groups to start with a 12" with a 7" edit, or no 7" at all, while outfits like the Pets started with trad length and then stretched the song out for 12" release. In fact I FINALLY got round to listening to the Cumplete Music double pack and I disliked it cos all they were doing was dragging things out for no reason (except money, of course). Razormaid is shit like that too. (There's actually a 12" of George Harrison's Got My Mind set On You, and yes, it's as silly as you'd expect.) Times Changed with London, when they took trad-length singles and got outside remixers to change them, with, um, varying results. But feels like I've been here before. I can't comment on the other MC mixes cos I couldn't be arsed and the tracks didn't need pumpimg up like Repubelick. The setlist looked good apart from the last six, but I guess they're obligatory now.

Yeah, the Lou Reed Street Hassle bits have worn out their welcome.

I feel as though the adoption of the Planet Funk remix of WftSC was possibly, in part, to de-emphasize Hooky's wonderful contribution to the song. It's a bit sad as I believe it's the last great thing they did together.

I have an inkling that Be A Rebel won't become quite as much of a set regular as the rest of the singles...

I'm doubtful that we'll get that many more gigs, to be honest.

But I hope I'm wrong.

Trainspotter differences between the three CD singles (tracklistings are the same).

Japan - EU - US
