There are some folks on the New Order Reddit sub that recently expressed interest in helping out in different ways. Also a few not-so-positive comments about the current state of the band on there, so take it for what it's worth.

Yes, I'll miss having this place as a startup tab on my browser. End of an era for sure.

Will be gutted to see this forum go, it's been part of my daily routine for years! The collective knowledge on here has always amazed me! I'm still hoping we'll get a stay of execution with the several offers to keep it going

Reddit isn't the best, theres a lot of fairly low effort posts on the new order sub reddit (Hookys favourite socks and that kind of thing..ok I made that up). And you really need to have some self discipline to keep out of the 1000s of other subreddits although there are settings to force your default view the sub Reddits you are subscribed to.

I've never used Reddit and have absolutely no idea how to. I do use the Steve Hoffman music forum where there's one or two ongoing JD/NO threads . The members who post on those threads do seem well informed and knowledgeable.

I'm happy to write up a guide so that it's only the new order subreddit you can see. I use it for other things job related so have lots of other ones visibl. Oh another thing, ai generated slop.Anyone browsing it the last few days will know what I am talking about.(New music announcement from Bernard was this week's nonsense)

I should clarify--the folks on the Reddit sub offered to help keep this site up and running.

I never post but often check the forum. Would be a pity if it goes away. Reddit is not an alternative...

What's that line from Alien 3, "You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else." Will be very sad to see NOOL go - although I rarely post thanks everyone here (many from back on the old Ceremony mailing list) for being part of my daily routine.

we've reached the midpoint of the month.

another 2 weeks or so to go.

happy holidays, and best wishes to everyone here.

will miss all the information, and now we have to wait for official updates from their social media, i guess.

i liked having the inside track with johnnyjames, and others..

also, will miss all the details and version corrections from mr discography, and others.

take care everyone, was a pleasure discussing things here..

Sad to see this coming to a close. I wish I could live in the summer of 1990 listening to Technique with life stretched out ahead of me, or in that period when Get Ready was coming out, I found this website and it seemed the band was primed for a run of great new albums. I appreciate everyone who ever answered a question, passed along a bootleg or just lent their enthusiasm to the discussions.

What's the consensus if this forum can't be salvaged/preserved then? Where will regulars from here migrate to? Is there a Facebook group or Reddit alternative? Guessing not, as there'll be too many casual fans and bog standard casual comments, with less space for the sorts of specialised fan comments and questions we have on here.

Where will you go off to instead?

While I don't want to diminsh the contribution of any one of the Dry 201 Message Pub patrons, I think it's worth pointing out that Johnny James is our only connection to an official source of information regarding the heritage releases. A lot rides on where he would be comfortable engaging with us.

That's a good point. I've loved hearing about all the box set behind the scenes info. What are your plans Johnny?

I'm not Johnny James (please see comments above, Mr Z) but I vote: Reddit.

Why? because Reddit is a 'specialist' kinda place where people go to discuss a particular subject (such as a band). Contrast that with Facebook where NO posts just become part of someone's casual FB feed. Also musicians -includng Peter Hook- have done AMA's (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit.

I don't really know where else is appropriate unless you do a Discord group, but the problem with Discord is that comments just kinda fly up the screen and get lost when new comments are made. It's fine for say, a listening party, but not so great for having subjects/threads that are easy to go back to, AFAIK. As for Telegram, i think that's way too private. (I'm happy to be corrected on these thoughts, I'm just spitballing here.)

Also I hold a grudge against Facebook for decimating this place! There are some very knowledgeable people in the NO FB groups (some people from here for e.g), but the general low level of the posts can be a bit tedious and repetitive too.

So, Reddit.

So, Reddit.

I find Reddit quite annoying, and I'd probably not visit very often. I'd say a general New Order thread on Steve Hoffman forums is more like what we are used to, in that it's forum-based and is moderated (and will be around for the foreseeable). I know a few of us are on there already

My preferences in order would be

  1. this forum gets handed over to a new host (seems unlikely given the radio silence)
  2. someone sets up a brand new forum to mirror this one and we start again
  3. a general NO thread on Steve Hoffman
  4. reddit
  5. definitely not Facebook!

Thanks but yes, there seems to be a few more than capable people on Reddit ( by what they said) keen to take over the running of this place and say they have tried to contact Nic but have had no response, sadly. Why hasn't Nic responded to them?

Well i actually vote Steve Hoffman forum. Been a member on there for a couple years now and as i said, there's some knowledgeable NO/JD folks on the NO/JD ongoing threads.

As it stands, it's nearly the end for this place. For since forever it's been a great place for disc4ussion, info and laffs. Best wishes to all. Thanks to Nic, Johnny James and all the old and current members .

made a wget archive of the forum.. about 30,000+ pages ..

i havent checked all the links, but the most recent posts works, images, and links should work..

file size is 21 MB zipped, expands to 2 Gigs.... all you have to do is drop the .html files into a browser. there is an index file, or try default.aspx@g=forum.html , any of those should work..

links that dont work, will point back to the web (until the site goes down).

Download link https://we.tl/t-tQadkVhRht

1 item forums-neworderonline-com.7z 20.8 MB

====================================

go ahead and check it out, took about 9 hours to download.

if you want, download wget for your OS (windows, mac, linux)...and then run:wget -r -c -p -k -E -e robots=off http://username:password@www.domain.com

after its done, it will then convert the files and links to use the local files.

merry christmas...and happy new year.

I did something similar to make an offline mirror of the website, using HTTRACK. It took well over 24 hours and is about twice the size of your download, so maybe it included some additional stuff? But anyway, if and when the site goes down, I can host the mirror as a static online archive, then if someone wanted to start a new forum, at least the old forum is still visible to check previous discussions. I'm just conscious of how many times we see the phrase "I think that was discussed before..."

Again, thanks for this, GBE.

It's good that people are trying to preserve this useful resource.
