Hi everyone,
I know this might seem strange but I like Erasure too and was surprised to find out that Diana Ross and Madonna liked Erasure and were huge fans....that made me think of what bands and/or artists are big fans of newOrder???? Are there any celebs that you know of that are big groupies of the band?

I remember that the lead singer from that 80's boy band Brother Beyond said he liked the Order and the Cure.
There was also an article in one of Sunday papers recently where Steve McFadden (Phil out of Eastenders) said him and his mate used to drive all over the country to see NO.

I do not know whether Garbage will be so keen these days after Hooky, still smarting from Reading 98¨s line up defined them as, well "total garbage".

About Bobby Gillespie: I read in an interview ('00) that he went to the Reading '98 concert and that he started crying 
during the concert. He also stated that their (New Order's) music was like "religion" 
to him. So I guess we can safely say that he's a fan...
I also read that Alex James of Blur (he's plays the bass in Blur) is a New Order fan. Also, at one of their concerts that I listened to on the radio, in between two songs, he played the beginning of one of Joy Divisions songs (I can't remeber which one).
Tim Burgess was on Jo Whiley and referred to new order in almost everything he said. he said he listens to Technique or PC&L before he goes on a night out. He also did a cover of Lonesome Tonight with Monaco at the Mcr uni in 97. also Neil Hannon of divine comedy is a fan, as is Jason Donovan!

Well, I was and still am a fan of The Boo Radleys... One of the most underrated bands in history, I think. What a shame !
Has anyone heard Trans Am??? They remind me slightly of New Order at times, maybe a bit more Kraftwerk, but man the kick major ass live. Saw this past thursday in Philly, brilliant gig. Check out their album Red Lines, oh and yes, I asked their guitarist/keyboardist: they love new order.

The Bood Radleys aldo did a song called Barney and Me that is specifically referring to the singer of New Order. I've been willing to put it online on the site for quite a while, but never found the strength to complete the group members' individual biographies (I wanted to link that song to Bernard's).

Do you really think that Nick Cave was influenced by Joy Division? I never heard anything like that. Sure thing, a lot of his music creates the same atmosphere and feeling that Joy Division and especially Ian Curtis used to create.
As a matter of fact, of all the artists around, I think Nick Cave would be the ultimate one to cover Joy Division songs, or even maybe the only one who could do justice to Joy Division songs the way Ian Curtis used to sing them.
Just like Ian Curtis had, Nick Cave has a voice that is deep, dark and mesmerizing.
Can you imagine him singing Atmosphere? Or New Dawn Fades?

The Birthday party was mainly influenced by Joy Division
Bernard Butler (used to be in Suede, now solo) listed (in Q Magazine) Technique as one of the albums he couldn't live without (I don't remember if it was the most important album for him, but I do remember a photo of him holding the album)...

Also.. on U.N.C.L.E's album Psyence Fiction, there is a hidden track in the beginning. In that track they have sampled (many) different bands/artists that apparantly had some influence on them. Listen to it and you can hear a part of "Blue Monday" being played!
And most people know about this one: The guys from Kraftwerk wanted to come over and see the device on which New Order programmed Blue Monday. Which they did.

There's a feature on Tim Burgess at the Mojo website in which he singles out PC&L as the album which changed his life. But then he does go on to quote an urban myth in which he once saw New Order do just a 20-min song, and that was it. Er, liar. His first gig was only the Spectrum in 86 which strikes me as getting into New Order a little late, for a Northerner supposedly well into his muzak at that time.
The Beloved were also a brilliant sub-NewOrder in the 80's but then split from a 4-piece to a 2-piece and went all ravey.
I think it's very 'trendy' for a bands (and also a lot of DJs/dance producers) to say they loved NO/JD. Kraftwerk are always namechecked by everyone as well. It's probably their way of either saying they've got the same 'don't give a shit' or 'We're doing it our way' attitude of early NO/JD

After Garbage took the stage at Reading '98, Shirley Manson said "How do we follow that?". Simple! Never let New Order perform before you!!! By the way Hooky was right, they were weak and shite live.

I think Another band from Sarah Records was inspired by NO: it was called 'The Wake' - and actually, it was formerly signed on Factory Records...
Evidently John 'On the Run' Denver was very keen on the Order until his recent demise aloft a light aircraft. He really did, unfortunately, leave on his own jet plane... not knowing if he'd be back again.
Perhaps Mr. Denver will think twice before he attempts to sue the Order in the future.

More seriously, I was talking about all the brit indie pop bands you were talking about in your former posts - Boo Radleys in particular. And I ran through these batcave times (SoM, mission and similar crap) just like you did in my early years.. A coincidence, maybe.

Don't know... I wasn't into The Mission though. But I used to like Anne Clark (Our Darkness especially). Those were the days.
It woud be interesting to know if there's some kind of logic in going from those batcave bands tastes to the ones from today...

a logic, hmmm... How about basslines? Most of these songs used to have a solid main bass line, guitars only used to appear in the choruses. Not sure this might be the link, but..

Then you grow up and realize you prefer something more subtle.

No, I don't think the lyrics are more subtle than the more melancholic ones from the past. In fact, there are some who thinks the lyrics are a bit weaker now. But still, I like both, though some of the New Order sound is gone, especially on "Rock the Shack" and "Slow Jam". For those who likes those tracks, just indicates the obvious. We're not entirely N.O.-religious.

We weren't talking about NO music but goth bands from when we were young and with poor tastes...
