Yeah, it seemed to me that the band was pissed off that night. By that time, I'd been sort of conditioned from what I'd read in the press in that the opening song would set the tone for the show; as you can probably remember, starting off with Your Silent Face wasn't exactly the uptempo number that most were looking for, I would imagine.

I didn't get that near the front, so I couldn't see everybody clearly all of the time, and to see what would be causing any problems, but I do recall being surprised that an encore(Blue Monday and Sister Ray!) was played (I'd also heard that they played for about 50 minutes tops, with no encore). Don't know if you've checked out the waterrat site yet, but they've got a report from that gig that pretty much summarizes everything.

The second leg of the '89 tour was billed as "The Monsters of Alternative Rock" (Sugarcubes and Public Image Ltd. opened the show) and the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre was the biggest venue I had seen them in. It was a bigger production with an amazing light show. The show started off (with Ceremony) on a somber note as Barney dedicated the set to the late Pete De Freitas. Probably my favourite show.

Both of the '93 shows I attended were pretty much interchangeable. New Order by-the-numbers and a big letdown after the previous shows I had seen. The Shoreline show was big (25,000) and I went with a couple of friends. Vince had seen New Order (and Electronic with Depeche Mode, the bastard!) before but Jarod hadn't. Jarod raved about the show afterward and couldn't understand the disappointment that Vince and I felt.

The Hollywood Bowl show was a little more enjoyable (free boxseat tickets, thank you Tom Atencio) but the band was pretty loose. Barney and Hooky especially seemed drunk. I recall Hooky screwing up Blue Monday pretty badly. Again, my girlfriend, a New Order newbie, was thrilled with the show while I walked away disappointed. It's all relative.

Lastly, I have conflicting emotions of the Area One show at Shoreline. The band played well and was enthusiastic. Hooky was stomping all over the place and Barney was whooping like a loon. Unfortunately, the sound mix was awful. Things improved a bit as the show went on but never reached their usual levels. I told myself that things would be better when they came back to tour on their own but I'm still waiting...

sadly enough, I haven't seen any of them.... I got into New Order too late while they were not touring. When they finally did some US dates however, they didn't come anywhere near where I live.

well i've been lurking here for a long time, but when i saw this thread, i must say that: " how i envy you guys!!" i consider "seeing new order live" as my biggest wish, and i even bought the finsbury park ticket on line! however i didn't make it due to some darn reasons... :( anyways, i know that barney hates tour, yet still i hope i could see their concert one day. no matter how far it will be!

Probably getting on for 150, including nearly ALL of the 1989 USA Technique shows. I also went to the first Electronic shows at the Dodgers stadium.

My first was the 1983 Brixton Ace in London and the last was Meadowlands in NYC.

Does the man scotsman frequent these boards? (Jon) or any of the Crazy gang who hit Frankfurt in 1983, or was it 1984? This of course included me old mucker Jon Marsh.

Ooh the memories are flooding back now.

It took some years, but finally managed to see them (hurray that they decided to pickup again in 1998!!)

They appeared as opening band for Ultravox, but Duran Duran was available at the last minute so NO had to sit the bench. Ha, but that should get you churning.

Not a roadie no. As I have already stated my first gig was Brixton in 1983. The following February??? a few of us jumped on an arranged trip to see the band in Frankfurt. Many friends were made and from then on we all used to meet up at EVERY gig in the UK, even helping each other get there on many occasions.

The USA '89 tour came round completely by accident. I just happened to be in Miami on the day the band were playing their first mainland show at and I bumped into Barney as I was making my way into the venue in the afternoon. I eventually ended up following them all the way to Seattle (I missed the Vancouver show through being completely shagged!)

The tour was actually in two stages so as my girlfriend was studying in NY at the time I simply went and stayed with her for a month before returning to San Francisco for the start of the second stage.

It looks as though I have found Jon Scott, who I first bumped into at the first on mainland USA in Miami, 1989. We travelled together to the shows in Tampa, Gainsville, Atlanta and New Orleans. Boy, are there some stories to tell, even in such a short time frame!

The highlights of the tour? TOO MANY TO MENTION! But a few immediately spring to mind...

The club we all went to after the Miami show.

Being asked to sleep in a cupboard when Jon Scott and his mate were making friends with a couple of American girls in Miami.

Funniest had to be when I was having a drink with Barney at an aftershow party in Phoenix and people were actually asking for MY autograph, even though I told them I was only a fan.

Chatting with Peter Saville at the Universal Ampitheater show in LA.

Getting into bars and clubs, in respective cities, and getting free drinks all night, compliments of my laminated ACCESS ALL AREAS pass!

Seeing Barney kick off backstage in Philadelphia when someone took his photo. Class.

Seeing Gillian swatting bugs as she was trying to play keyboards in Kansas City.

Seeing New Order at Red Rocks in Denver.

Having free rides on rollercoasters whenever the band played venues in parks such as Astroworld (Houston) and Six Flags over Georgia (Atlanta).

The whole experienced kind of left me burned out as far as the band are concerned. Great band and great memories though.

PS 'Getting around'

On the first stage I managed to get hold of a Delta Airlines pass. Which cost around £250 (I don't think they do them any longer)

This ticket would allow me to travel ANYWHERE, and as often as I liked, in the continental USA for a month. To save money I would actually take a flight and sleep on a plane.

For example, if the band were playing somewhere like Los Angeles and the last show was in Phoenix I would fly to somewhere like JFK in NY. Have some food on the plane and get some sleep. By the time I reached NY it would be almost morning and I would simply get on another flight back to the west coast and help myself to some more food and sleep! A majority of the airports in the US have (or had) shower facilities so I would utilise these and make the odds trip to a local laundrette to get my clothes washed periodically.

The credit card did take a little bashing but it's amazing how much you can save when you really try.

On the second stage my girlfriend and I delivered a car for a company for AUTODRIVEAWAY, from San Francisco to Baltimore, allowing us to take in ALL the shows enroute, although we were a few days late!

We are indeed not worthy - we can only dream of 150 different shows, particularly as they nearly all will have had a different set every night, and around 120+ will have had Perfect Kiss played !!!

I never paid once for a ticket. Barney stuck me on the guest list for the first show then once the three of us hit Tampa Jon Scott had a work with Hooky (and despite this!) we were then on the list for the respective shows in Gainsville, Atlanta and New Orleans.

Indeed, the venues in the States were varied. You could say they fell into three different catagories. 1) The Ampertheater style (Philadelphia, Millwalkee and Columbus, for example) 3) Festival (Houston, Atlanta and San Diego) and the standard indoor venue (New Orleans, Portland and Seattle)

The last time I saw Jon was in our hotel room in New Orleans and he was about to drive all the way back to Miami.

For me, there was a few days before the show in Austin, TX so I just flew around the country for a few days helping myself to some sleep and food! I couldn't tell you how many flights I have been on but I have a bloody good idea what a majority of the airports looks like!

The Delta ticket also incorporated small regional airlines so on a few occasions I travelled between shows in a four seater prop plane. Burbank to Santa Barbara had to be the highlight

Now, once I arrived in Austin I bumped into Andy Robinson who stuck me on the list for the shows from then on.

It was not until the second stage that Andy and Rob Gretton (a total STAR of a man!) sorted me out a laminated ACCESS ALL AREAS pass. License to give it the big one! The first I had had since the shows between Sunderland and London in 1984.

The names you mention do not immediately ring a bell. The Plymouth gang were ever present (Kim and Karen), as was Shane and his mate from Slough. I first met Jon Marsh (eventually The Beloved) in Germany and we went to several of the gigs together in 1984 (he still owes me a nights rent for kipping in my Astra!) So many people, but so long ago. I'm knocking 38 so please give me a break! lol

Yeah, they started doing the same-ish set in 89, didn't they ! That's two of us with Jon Marsh experiences then - I did the Beloved 86 tour supporting The Fall, and was in regular contact with Jon until he went all ambient and drippy on us :)

Would you say Ceremony was primarily a New Order or a Joy Division song?

However many times you have seen New Order all that matters is what you took out of it and if you think they are fantastic then it doesn't matter whether it's 1 or 100 times. Part of me still wishes for the buzz I encountered when I saw them for the first time back at the Brixton Ace.

Interesting point regarding Jon's return journey Al. The last time I spoke with him was just before I flew over top LA to see the first Electronic shows. He said nothing about the arrest though! Although I knew there was something not right because when I tried to rent a car at Orange County Airport (to get to the Universal shows) AVIS would NOT rent me a car! Then again, we were NOT very kind to the white car we collected at Tampa Airport.

By the time Jon left for the return journey to Florida the car was in a right state! For some bizarre reason we took to it with a pen and lipstick. Poor thing never stood a chance!

'85 is pretty much a blur I am afraid but I definately saw the band on a few occasions. I do vaguely remember seeing them at the in Newcastle, plus I believe there was at least one show at that ballroom place in Birmigham? Also, Kentish Town was another (bumped into Jon Marsh for the last time). There was probably a crap load more I went to but I simply can't remember! Clues anyone!?!

Other people I do remember are the male nurse from Blackpool who used to live in London, the crazy little bloke from Southampton, the mad geezer from Windsor with New Order tatoos!, and Kirk and his little mate from west London. At least some of it is coming back!

The memories are flooding back now. Melonball cocktails in this bar the evening before the show in Gainsville. We were so knackered afterwards the waitress took us back to her place. Her garden was YACK-ville in the morning if my memory serves me correctly!

6 times, mostly in Glasgow (let them come to me !) over a period of 20 bloody years ! Missed out on Joy Division although the rumours at the time were that they were due to play in Glasgow soon after returning from the USA, August 1980 I think - according to my mate who was working as a concert promoter back then.

The Leeds gig was a cracker. In the middle of the shopping centre? and I believe we had some snow at the time. I actually spent the night in Manchester before thumbing it down to the Micheal Sobel Centre gig in Finsbury Park. The Finsbury Park gig was the last time I ever spoke with Slim. Does anyone remember him and Dave 'racer' pils???

The Macclesfield show was in a badminton court wasn't it?!?! I do remember being stuck on the train station all night with a couple from Liverpool. We kept in touch for years afterwards. Funny how you meet people sometimes.

And remember the Youth? And the 'Youth Youth Youth' chant that went up at gigs. They were a tasty bunch of fellas. Lots of tattoos of New Order in there too. Actually, mentioned a lad called Simon earlier in this thread cos we ran into him in Sweden last year and he'd done the German stuff in 84 and he had a New Order tattoo too - 'Perfect Kiss' across the top of his arm.

yes...the merrion centre in leeds was/is a shopping centre...and the tiffs club was somewhere in the middle of it... the leisure centre gig at macc still had the badminton markings on the floor...so for one night only it was converted for a heaving mass of maniacs to get crushed to near death...

during that time..a year later i think...did you manage to get to the sheff roxy gig??...the barry noble club on top of a multi-storey car park...what a venue that was...

I think there were 3 shows at the Tower Ballroom possibly '83, '85 and '86 of which I went to the latter 2. How can you forget the palm trees in the middle of the dance floor - probably my favourite ever venue!

I 've just been totting up my amount of gigs and its 22 which is alot less than I thought. The nearest being Finsbury Park (a 5 mins walk from the flat) last summer and the furthest Dusseldorf in December 1987 - god that was cold.

Some great memories in this thread - I'd completely forgotten about the guy in the shorts and the beard. I remember seeing him for the first time at one of the Hacienda gigs.

Ah, the fake plastic trees ! Has to be my favourite venue as well, and is the only venue I've seen them three times in (I should have gone to more than one Brixton gig in 2001 !!)

I always enjoyed the gigs at the Ballroom in Birmingham (or was it actually called Edgbaston?) Next to a river? The show at the Powerhouse in the same city was superb too. Then again, back then they were all pretty special, in their own way.

Leeds Tiffs was my first time,don't remember much except worrying i wouldn't get in coz i was under 18.Sheff uni(octagon?) was a cracking gig.The Roxy was in 87 and I seem to remember almost leaving coz no-one expected an encore and we got "do the ostrich".'86 Liverpool getting caught in the rush from the bar to the hall as TPK started everyone thought New Order would be on last.G-mex"tenth summer" a favourite if only for Mac singing Ceremony.Heady Days.

The Tower Ballroom was actually above part of Edgbaston Reservoir. Something about the apparent unsuitability of the venue made it a far better choice of venue - sure, The Powerhouse was better suited to gigs, but I always enjoyed the Tower Ballroom. And it was only half an hour from home :)

There was a group from manc i believe,I know one of them as alex though I believe you call him stash.He got andy robinson to get me on the guest list for Boston and NY.One of the other guys i think turns up in Neworderstory stood next to barney when he accuses wilson of ruining his career. Saw most of them again at reading 98 and alex in the pub at the second appollo gig in 01.

As an aside I do remember an obnoxious barman at the greatwoods gig refusing to serve me coz i had neither a US drivers licence(license!) or a US passport.Finally got a beer by doing the all american thing and complaining to his superior.Also you couldn't buy rounds unless you all went up together to show your ID.This wasn't at every gig but i do recall it happening.

I only did four,toronto,ny,washington and boston.I think there were only another four gigs on that tour which quite possibly could've been dry(knowing the states).By the way do you remember a prospective gig in 87? Plymouth Rocks at PAFC's ground,had tickets but then it got pulled,seem to remember the banshees and spear of destiny were also on the bill,would have made an interesting day.

lost my cash on that as well,as far as new order live letdowns thats gotta take the biscuit.

I was in the process of trying to find Molly's house by 'borrowing' a map in the Circle K when I noticed a police car had pulled up outside and the female officer was shining her pencil torch first over our delightfully decorated white AVIS rental car, then turning her attention to the other crumpled wreck which had wriggled into the back seat!

I had visions of the both of us in orange boiler suits humming Mr Disco in solitary confinement but thankfully she shared a good sense of humour and actually helped me find the way to Molly's house.

Yeah, promoter went bust didn't they? Never got my money back for that one. New Order were only about 7th on the bill though - and were due on about 2 in the afternoon or something!!!

I'd forgotten that one ! Yes, we never got a refund either.
