New bands after the Order

As an obsessive record collector, who now owns everything by JD/NO, what are some other bands that I could get into? I checked out the list of "25 Essential New Wave/Post Punk" and have already given most of those a try (I'm really more into the new-wave side of things as opposed to bands like the Ramones). Some I already love are: Magazine (and all of Howard's side projects: solo, Luxuria, ShelleyDevoto) Smiths, Fall, Buzzcocks, Clash, Pet Shop Boys, Pere Ubu, Happy Mondays, Elvis Costello, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. Like many of you I mostly listen to this older stuff but Radiohead and Bjork are my current favourite artists.

You could certainly give Depeche Mode a try, just don't tell anyone on here...

Well, there's this little band called "Joy Division" that you might wanna check out....:p

Seriously, if you're into the new wave aspect I would suggest XTC, the Jam (more punk than new wave, but very good), Mission of Burma, Public Image Ltd. (John lydon's post-Pistols band), Jonathan Richman (70's stuff), the Smiths....I could go on.

If you like that old dance/pop stuff, you could try out some Vince Clark material: Depeche Mode's Speak and Spell Yaz Erasure

OMD's singles are pretty good too.

You should also check out The Cure & Ultravox which seem to be very popular on this site.

cocteau twins are also popular here.

you seem to know all the old bands that are worth checking out. maybe some new ones? ladytron is one of the best new bands out there.

Ok, I'll probably get grief for these but here would be my short list off the top of my head:

PoP

-- Blancmange...funny and ironic...intelligent pop -- Charlatans...I know they are somewhat generic but I like 'em all the same --Echo and The Bunnymen...just cool...'sept for the jim morrison impression :) --Nick Cave...campy sometimes but brilliantly romantic at others

Cool & Different:

--Coil...bizarre and dark (have many of the gothic (not goth) and romantic qualities of JD). I think Ian would've really liked them if he were alive today --Tom Waits...the best individual musician/composer of my generation in my opinion. --Sonic Youth: they were radiohead before radiohead existed (and a bit more interesting in my opinion) --Einsterzende Neubauten (SP?) Pure experimental/industrial...German expressionists. --Velvet Underground...just take a listen and you will understand :) --Kraftwerk...true originals in their field.

oh well...I know I'm missing a lot here but thats a start anyway...

Have you heard of Client? They are a new electronic outfit (two anonymous ladies, by the way) managed by Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode. Their sound pays a bit of homage to the earlier new wave/synth pop stuff, much like in the same vein as Ladytron (although I never got to hear much from the second Ladytron album)...which is oddly being referred to as the "new new wave". There is one band that I couldn't quite get into...they are a tribute to Kraftwerk, known as Kraftwelt. The stuff I've heard (at least on the first album) didn't really strike me as great and their one music video seemed kinda boring.

Thanks to everyone who replied so quickly! I'm glad I found some people who understand the importance of collecting good music.

There are some bands you have mentioned that I will definitely look into... I've heard good things about the Jam, Cocteau Twins, Mission of Burma and some of those others before.... haven't got around to getting any of their stuff yet. Any particular albums that I should be looking for?

When I wrote that list I wasn't near to my record collecion so I was rhyming off artists from memory, and so I have before tried some like Kraftwerk (who I really like) and Depeche Mode (the one record I bought by them, "People are People", didn't really speak to me. Is there another that anyone feels is a better introduction?) and the Pumpkins (who I think mercilessly pillaged through NO's catalogue for "Machina").

And which Electronic album would be most representative of their work? I've heard mixed reviews in other places.

Don't forget to check out Doves. Their two albums (Lost Souls, Last Broadcast) are damn near essential.

I also love Weezer, they are in my mind the best of the "new Punk" from the early 90s (I would even rank them higher than Green Day)

If you love the NEW ORDER/JOY DIVISION also try early IGGY POP and THE DOORS.The DOORS are so superb and ay their time were so brilliant and inventive with such a great sound and a FANTASTIC frontsman.You will notice certain similarities between JOY DIVISION and them. Rocket Mick

Check out the band Interpol, they are brand new band with tremendous talent and a strong resemblance to Joy Division.

Band from Detroit called "Electric 6". Saw them a couple of months ago, they're gonna be massive.

The video for their single 'High Voltage' is one of the most sinister things I have ever seen

I say early Art Of Noise, middle career OMD, older Cure (prior to Disintegration), Echo and the Bunnymen, middle career INXS, Tears for Fears first album, Pop Will Eat Itself, some early Toad the Wet Sprocket, or any They Night Be Giants if you are into wierd/funny stuff.

It it wasn't for Bob Mould and Grant Hart, Nirvana would never have plugged their geetars in, a whole generation of kids would never have able to articulate their disaffection.

If you really want to discover something invigorating that is still as fresh as a daisy nearly 20 years after it was recorded, discover Husker Du. Take a Beatles-type hookline and melody, and stick it through a fuzzbox and a Flying V, speed it up to a little more than 60 miles an hour, and let it into your soul like a mainline to your brain. Addiction is instant and unescapable.

The Everlasting Blink by Bent. Cool electronica, very much in the Air/Royskopp mould.

Also Handcream For A Generation by Cornershop is worth a listen.

another great minneapolis band from the same era--the replacements. don't know what it was about that city in the mid-late '80s, but something was going on there (prince is from mpls. as well!).

I reckon you should go for early Roxy Music and if you've got the time you should check out The Fall - try Extricate or Shftwork, both top albums. And St Etienne and Black Box Recorder are top notch too.

I don't know if I would throw Sugar in the gold or new wave catagory. Husker's good

JMAC, a great band, munki and automatic are two of my favourite albums, revenrance wins hands down for lyirical contents! good man for mentioning them
