After listening a few times to "Turn On The Bright Lights", this is truly a brillant album.
A few songs on this album, you could easily see the Joy Division connection so many people were talking about.
This is FINALLY a band worth listening TODAY.
After watching 24 Hour Party People yesterday, I can easily picture Ian Curtis singing on Obstacle 1 or PDA :D
Go ahead, buy the thing, it's worth it...
This is an excellent album. The Joy Division comparisons are obvious but not exclusive. You can also hear the Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen, the Chameleons, and other select influences. Their album Turn On The Bright Lights ended up on about a gazillion "best list" for 2002. Little wonder.

I totally agree. As I said in some of the other threads about interpol, This is the first band I guess since New Order I actually can get excited about. Yes, there sound is not very original, but I'll take that over any NuMetal, mall punk, etc anyday. They are very good live. I can't wait to see them again in baltimore.
Brilliant stuff, my roommate sent me their tunes after I told him my music tastes include JD/NO. Gonna go listen to it again actually 
Funny isn't it. Everyone slagged Oasis for sounding like other bands, yet when a band copy the JD/NO sound they are loved by the regulars here !
You guys should really hear some of the early stuff by The Beloved.....

I used pretty much the same rationale when I bought it, and wasn't disappointed. I was in The States at the time, and the fact that it was only 7 dollars helped as well.
To be honest, I don't get all these sound-alike accusations. They appear to be a band well capable of standing up on their own merit. So you can pick out some influences here and there, but you can do that with a million other bands, JD and NO included.
This belief that they are Joy Division reincarnate is pretty wide of the mark....
Pt 3: ...particularly claiming that their track 'roland' is a complete rip-off of shadowplay...
pt 4 ...(quote "same chords, the same riff and the same vocal melody"). (Also some other track is supposed to sound just like This Charming Man.)

Yeah, I agree with you BENNY....I really like The Beloved when their debut album came out...yes, they do belong to the 'New-Order-ish' genre.....but i kinda lost in interest ( but still bought the CDs out-of-loyalty ) in the band after it became him and his missuss.....and the melodies are no longer there....

and yes, interpol are great.:D been a fan for 4 months and their b-sides are sooooo good (however few they have). the specialist and song seven are definitely some of the best songs i've heard from them.

I like 'em, but I'm more excited by Doves. "The Last Broadcast" was by far my favorite of all the stuff that came out last year. It's a pity Factory isn't around anymore to under-promote both bands :D
Going to see them at the Astoria next month, can't wait. TOTBL is one of the best albums I've ever bought.
Problem with the Doves, IMHO, are the singer's voice.. don't know why, but the music is excellent, but the vocals are weak...
I like 'em a lot as well, and they'll be in town on Friday (valentine's day? 
) with a meet and greet session at a record store, with a show afterward. Still not sure if I can make it or not though(work'll be a bitch on Friday).
Have to admit though, that the price of the Interpol CD was a very big reason I bought it. 9 dollars? Pretty good bargain by my reckoning.
Reviewers on Amazon.com have also been lambasting the album, most of them feel that the Ian Curtis vocal similarities are a negative quality. Also many feel that the band borrows too much from the Joy Division sound, and add nothing of their own.
But I disagree. I've listened to some of their songs, and besides the fact that I like their take on Joy Division's sound, they do put their own stamp on it. Their music seems to be more layered (beyond the 'live', sparse quality that JD had, esp. on Unknown Pleasures), and their melodies are original.
I think that they take the JD blue print and add nothing of their own. I am not a fan.
I feel Ladytron are the best of the new wave of new wave bands, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club too.

A really impressive debut. I heard NYC and although that is for me still the best track I was delighted by the rest(apart from the This Charming Man take-off). They're great at setting up tension with clean, sparse guitars and a thuddering rhythm section. They were good live too partly cos of "the look" and their fashion devotees in the audience but the main thing is the music's good.
Of course they stand on their own merits, they're great musicians and the fact that there are comparisons to JD or the Smiths goes to show that they have good taste. Why anyone would dog or ignore them is beyond me. As a child of late 70's/80's music, I've been inspired and touched by many great bands as I'm sure all of you have. The quality of those that have affected me most is honesty, probably the truest test of a bands worthyness and longevity. So far, they not only do they have my attention, but they take me to that other place, and it feels. I can only hope that they continue expressing themselves artfully and drawing from the same wells that I appreciate and enjoy most. For all you naysayers, do yourself a favor, open up and give a second listen.

Are they really THAT good? I'm not so sure. There is about 3/4 standout tracks on the album but the rest of it sounds like any kind of NY new wave band from the early 80's onwards.
Personally I can't see the link with JD, if anything they sound abit like REM in places.
I read somewhere that Interpol and Ladytron might be remixing each other's tracks which could bring interesting results.
i've rambled about Interpol here in the past but it's been months so why not do it again. They're the funnest new band of the past couple of years to me, there's definitely JD there, but JD incarnate they're not.
The more I hear the guy sing the more he sounds like Ian, but he sounds like a lot of other guys too, depending on the song. He especially sounds like Ian on live recordings. He has a "better" singing voice, but writes bad lyrics and certainly isn't a clone. Though Interpol is far from sterile, as far as emotional impact goes there is just no comparison to JD. On the other hand, their music is sexier. Interpol's music is mostly fun--dark, pretty, rocking, nocturnal fun. The songs are good and the sound is great. They rip off JD without being some crap wimpy laughable goth band.
And as for the crap they get for their fashion, it's not any more contrived than all the other indie bands in their indie uniforms of perfectly constructed just-fell-out-of-bed hair, tight obscure t-shirts etc. I saw hot hot heat recently and they had some of the worst deliberate hairdoes I've ever seen and they don't get shit for it.
This Charming Man--yep, they rip it off.
Their bass player played a wonderful dj set at a local record store the day before their show last week--Section 25, old New Order (one on the 2nd disc of Substance, which Steve wrote, can't remember the title), Delta 5, Gang of Four. if clubs played that stuff I'd go! I talked to him afterwards and he was very gracious, patient, and down-to-earth.

Yes--I think their clothes are great, too. What I meant was, writers always comment on their clothes and hair and are often derogatory about it, while bands with a really contrived slobby look don't get that. At least it's honest. A local band around here, Silkworm, incidentally huge JD/NO fans and now relocated to Chicago, had a phase where they all wore sharkskin suits onstage. It was fantastic!
