Hi everyone,
This is my favourite song and I wanna know what´s your favourite version. The Oscar goes to 12" b-side in my opinion.
Take care.

There's something wrong here. The Pennine version was recorded in January 1980 and this is the one on the B-side of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (both 7" and 12"). It's faster than the A-side version and it's also available on "Permanent".
The A-side version was recorded at Strawberry Studios in March 1980 and this is the most well-known version. This is the one available on "Substance".
I prefer the "Peel Session" version by the way.
I actually like the Trouser Enthusiasts Mix myself, sorry.. Just because it stays true to the original, is longer and dance-worthy. And they play it at my favorite bar. ;)
Where's Paul Young's (Luton's finest) infinitely superior version??? ;)
Dunno if anyone's read Rules of Attraction (I thought I'd give it a re-read before seeing the film) but Bateman mentions dancing to Joy Division's LWTUA, but then realises it's not Joy Division at all, it's a poppier version (presumably Paul Young's?).. .
Is the 12" B side on Permanent? Didn't know that - never bothered getting it. Have to do so now, I love that version.
The A-side of the single. I read the whole of the form and substance book last night (cheers Jan
) and it explained how the band weren't happy with the original lyrics, so they re-recorded them at Strawberry Studios. This is the "Ultimate" version as far as I'm concerned.
I don't actually think any version of it does full justice. It's been fairly well documented that Ian had massive difficulties with the vocal, and sad but true, Barney sings it miles better.
Peel Sessions..... sounds the best...
Actually I disagree Barney does NOT sing it better... he sings it pretty well but Ian's vocals are part of what actually make the song LWTUA.
Does Barney sing LWTUA better ? Not really,he tries so hard but Ian sang with his heart and emotion. That´s what make it sounds so wonderful.
it may sound obvious but the reason why LWTUA sounds better with Ian on vocals is because they are his lyrics, his words based on what ultimately led to his downfall. although barney may sing it well its impossible for him to better ian simply because its cliche "Ian's song"

Or infinitely better still, the version by Prozac For Lovers..? I feel dirty even joking about that..![]()
What were they thinking??
in some ways, my favorite is actually the one that appears on the Les Baines Douches disc. so much energy and raw power. fabulous!
Video clip for me but i get so confused with all these. The song and the time it came out is so special to me that i am almost in tears typing this.Class class CLASS.
What you going to do when the NOVELTY has gone?I will tell you now.23 years later and it is STILL happening.KEEP THE FAITH.We are ALL so LUCKY to have these records and memories.

definitely, Rocket! i've listened to LWTUA thousands of times, and it grows on me more each time i hear it. it's probably the only song that makes me tingle all over, each and every time it enters my ears. it's magical and wonderful and, for me, the best song ever written.
yay for Love Will Tear Us Apart!
I love thr Peel Session version because it sounds so rough and steves' drumming is brilliant.

So, I suppose this is the version they performed at Peel...![]()
I love the classic "slower" version that is the A-side. I think it really taps into the heartbreak in the lyrics far more than the B-side or Peel Sessions version (though I like those as well)![]()
Definitely the substance mix. It's brilliantly refined, although the energy of New Order's performance at Finsbury Park was pretty special.

when I was a small boy I used to listen to 'No Parlez' (great title). And LWTUA again and again.
It was only years later I realised it was a JD song.
I like PY's voice, and I don't mind his version (resplendent with Pino Palladino bass chorused to space and back). Not sure its my favourite though.
But Al, which version 'nowadays' is 'more' poppy?

In the Peel session version, Hooky plays bass in a neworderish manner, while Ian sings without counterfeiting his voice to sound like Sinatra... but just with his own emotions ! That's why this version is my favourite.
This lyric was made by Ian, and only is LWTUA in his voice. All the versions are wonderful, but the one in John Pell Sessions 1979 is the best one.
