Songs that sound better live

Giving Frisbee a quick spin its amazing how REGRET sounds so much more powerful live than it does on Republic,

So what songs do you think AVE IT LARGE! when played live and pale their studio counterparts into insignificance?

gotta be Temptation.

Ooh - loads :

• 5-8-6 for the extended percussion workout in the middle
• Let's Go the instrumental version, which sounded ten times better than that on Salvation
• Face Up, as Shug says, if only for the extra electronic handclaps at the beginning (incidentally, on PFD watch Steve's mouth - he actually attempts to vocalise those handclaps )
• Hurt as with 5-8-6 worth the admission money alone for the percussion mash-up in the middle
• Angel Dust criminally underplayed track from Brotherhood which sounded fab live
• Temptation for the simple reason that the live version has never been truly captured on vinyl, although the 1987 version was the closest yet
• Ceremony which transforms into a good rocking song, escaping Hannett's claustrophobic production

Plenty more out there, but these are the few that spring to mind at the moment :)

I'd agree with all of those, and add

We All Stand - great song live Ultraviolence - some great synth noises in live versions that weren't on the record Sooner Than You Think - extra dimensions live

She's Lost Control - brilliant version on 511-DVD!

Your Silent Face - nowadays when Stephen adds more live-drums towards the end

Round & Round - great version on "Electronic Ecstacy"

Touched by the Hand Of God - the re-worked live-version.

Not to forget all of Movement (with the possible exception of Dreams Never End; the guitars on the album sound much better, but then again, you don't get the SCREAMS!!), in particular Truth, Chosen Time, Senses (especially the instrumental part at the end!!!), The Him & Denial (gotta love it when Steve starts slow on the latter, and then all of a sudden speeds up!!!).

Also We All Stand, Ultraviolence, Thieves Like Us (when the bass comes in), This Time Of Night, Let's Go (damn, ran out of exclamation marks).

The bass on Leave Me Alone is also great live, but unfortunately there's always at least one of the guitarists who fucks up, so that I've yet to hear a truly decent live version of that one.

Oh, yeah, and I only got into 'Touched By The Hand Of God' after having heard a couple of live performances (including whoops galore).

You sound like you've only ever heard the re-recorded version. The original 7" version is unsurpassed, imho.

I've grown to like Digital a lot since hearing it live: it has a fuller & more dynamic feel.

I know it's not their greatest song but I really liked the live version of 'Everyone Everywhere'.

Maybe not better than the Substance version , but I prefer the 5 11 live version to the original one. Anyway is LWTUA, one the finest moments of modern music.

Talking of LWTUA i really really really like the Jools version (despite the dodgy fleece Barney!! ) and the criminal sin of the credits rolling over the end of the song

The Recycle-onwards version of Touched is fooking brilliant. The BBC Radio 1 concert 1987 version is just dire.

I'm surprised that some aren't big on the Album version of Regret. I think it sounds absolutely terrific on the album and live, and the Neworder mix on the single is damn good as well. Age of Consent is another one, amazing live, but just as amazing on the album (though more for the vocals, and that synth bridge that is gorgeous beyond compare than for the thinly produced bass riff that sounds much better live).

As it was when it was is an absolute classic, but I always mourned the fact that they didn't pull a King of Birds on it. R.E.M. performed that amazing tune live w/acoustic instrumentation and bongo's rather than a drum kit and electric guitars and it lent a majesty to the song that wasn't quite there on the album version. A lighter treatment of As it was, when it was might have made it an incomparable masterpiece, the song is perfectly suited for an acoustic rendering, though I'm not sure how they'd address the last minute or so when they just jam their way to a finish. It could sound good acoustically, but that finale lends itself more to electrification.
