Johnny Marr and Radiohead in Montreal...

Half on-topic -- just two articles printed today in La Presse newspaper (main french newspaper in Montreal) and the first one has several New Order and Electronic references.

Le nom de Johnny Marr ne vient jamais seul. Indissociable de celui de Morrissey, son complice au sein des Smiths, groupe emblématique de l'Angleterre thatchérienne de 1983 à 1987, il a été associé au cours des 15 années suivantes à une foule de gros noms de la pop intelligente. Son passé se lit en petits caractères aux génériques des disques des Beck, The The, Electronic, Pet Shop Boys, Oasis et Beth Orthon, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns. Et son présent s'affiche en grosses lettres blanches sur la pochette du premier album de son nouveau groupe, The Healers, en concert demain au Café Campus.

Après 20 ans passés dans l'ombre, on s'étonne de voir ce guitariste qu'on avait définitivement rangé du côté des sidemen briguer une place au-devant de la scène. Jamais il n'a paru gêné de se tenir derrière un autre chanteur, qu'il s'agisse de Bernard Sumner (New Order), son partenaire au sein d'Electronic, de Matt Johnson (The The) ou, à plus forte raison, du charismatique Morrissey. Son départ des Smiths, après Strangeways Here We Come, n'a d'ailleurs rien à voir avec une crise d'ego. Ses motivations, assure-t-il, étaient purement musicales.

Manchester, sa ville, bouillait à l'aube des années 90: Happy Mondays, l'Hacienda (boîte de nuit associée à New Order), l'émergence de la culture rave. Johnny Marr avait peur de manquer la coche. «Quelque chose de très stimulant se produisait, expose-t-il. Une révolution musicale qui passait par la technologie, la mode, la drogue et les boîtes de nuit. Tout allait dans une certaine direction et The Smiths allait à l'opposé. Je trouvais que nous risquions dangereusement de devenir une parodie de nous-mêmes.»

L'avenir lui a donné raison. Manchester a effectivement bouleversé le paysage de la musique pop et Morrissey, en solo, a effectivement fini par devenir une parodie de lui-même. N'empêche, en plus de peindre avec justesse l'Angleterre déprimante du milieu des années 80, The Smiths avait eu le temps d'échapper une vision du futur. How Soon is Now, chanson hypnotique de presque sept minutes gravée sur Meat is Murder, porte le germe de la révolution musicale de Manchester. «Je ne sais pas trop si c'est vraiment le cas, hésite Johnny Marr. Peut-être que c'est vrai, mais avec Blue Monday de New Order.»

Derrière son muret de guitares, Boomslang possède un groove qui n'est pas sans évoquer cette période bénie de la pop britannique où le rock faisait de l'oeil au plancher de danse. «Ça n'avait rien d'intentionnel, jure le guitariste, ça doit être quelque chose dans l'eau qu'on boit!» Johnny Marr a fait un long détour pour en arriver là. Il a d'abord voulu enregistrer en communauté, abritant jusqu'à une douzaine de musiciens chez lui. Après avoir traversé sa phase tribale, il a finalement resserré les liens autour d'un trio au sein duquel on retrouve le bassiste Alonza Bevan et le batteur Zack Starkey, fils d'un certain Richard Starkey, mieux connu sous le nom de Ringo Starr.

«On a fait le tri à force de donner des concerts, expose Johnny Marr. On a éliminé beaucoup de synthétiseur et de percussions, et on a augmenté le volume des guitares. Les groupes britanniques sont tellement préoccupés par l'émotion qu'ils en deviennent terriblement pleurnichards et les Américains sont tellement préoccupés par l'attitude qu'ils oublient de faire des chansons. Je voulais simplement faire du rock tripatif et hypnotique. Je pense que nous y sommes parvenus.»

Radiohead en primeur... à Montréal!

Grosse nouvelle pour les fans de Radiohead: le groupe-culte donnera un concert exclusif dans les studios de MusiquePlus le 2 juin, une semaine avant la sortie mondiale très attendue de Hail to the Thief. Seuls de 150 à 250 chanceux auront l'occasion d'assister à cet événement unique au Canada au cours duquel Thom Yorke et les frères Greeenwood, Johnny et Colin, parleront de leur nouveau disque et joueront quelques chansons en formule acoustique.

«On leur a demandé de jouer huit chansons, mais on ne sait pas encore combien ils accepteront d'en faire», expose Richard Gamache, directeur des communications à MusiquePlus, visiblement heureux d'avoir pu obtenir Radiohead en exclusivité avant la sortie du disque. On savait bien sûr que l'album s'en venait et que le groupe serait en promotion, alors on a pris contact avec la compagnie de disques. Nos relations sont bonnes avec EMI, on l'a eu.»

Radiohead n'est pas encore déclaré artiste du mois de juin à MusiquePlus, mais il n'est pas exclu qu'il le devienne. Des raisons de gestion exigent que l'artiste du mois joue au moins six chansons en ondes, ce qui n'est pas encore confirmé dans le cas du groupe d'Oxford.

Les laissez-passer seront attribués par voie de concours sur les ondes de MusiquePlus. «On veut s'assurer qu'on aura de vrais fans du groupe en studio», précise M. Gamache. Après la visite en studio de Sean Paul la semaine dernière, alors qu'il trônait au sommet des palmarès, la venue de Radiohead constitue un bon coup pour la chaîne spécialisée.

Après son escale à Montréal, Thom Yorke et consorts mettront le cap sur New York où il donneront, le 5 juin, un concert privé pour MTV, prestation qui sera retransmise en direct par satellite dans plusieurs cinémas Paramount au Canada. Une source fiable a signalé à La Presse qu'il s'en est fallu de peu pour que ce concert ait lieu au Métropolis. Radiohead donnera son premier concert officiel en Amérique du Nord le 7 juin dans le cadre du Field Day Music Festival, le week-end précédant la sortie de Hail to the Thief.

The name of Johnny Marr never comes only. Indissociable of that of Morrissey, its accomplice within Smiths, groups emblematic of England thatchérienne of 1983 to 1987, it was associated during 15 years following to a crowd of large the pop names intelligent one. And its present is displayed in large white letters on the small pocket of the first album of its new group, The Healers, in concert tomorrow with the Coffee Campus.

After 20 years spent in the shade, one is astonished to see this guitarist whom one had definitively arranged on the side of the sidemen briguer a place ahead of of the scene. Never it appeared obstructed to be held behind another singer, who it acts of Bernard Sumner (New Order), his partner within Electronic, of Matt Johnson (The The) or, with more strong reason, of charismatic Morrissey. Its departure of Smiths, after Strangeways Here We Come, does not have besides anything to see with a crisis of ego. Its motivations, ensures it, were purely musical.

Manchester, its city, boiled at the dawn of the Nineties: Happy Mondays, Hacienda (night club associated with New Order), the emergence of the culture turnip. Johnny Marr was afraid to miss the opportunity. "Something of very stimulant occurred, exposes it. A musical revolution which passed by technology, the fashion, the drug and the night clubs. All went in a certain direction and The Smiths went to the opposite. I found that we are dangerously likely to become a parody of ourselves."

The future gave him reason. Manchester actually upset the landscape of the pop music and Morrissey, in solo, actually ended up becoming a parody of itself. Do not prevent, in more of painting with accuracy depressing England of the middle of the Eighties, The Smiths had had time to escape a vision from the future. Early product Radiohead... in Montreal!

Large news for the fans of Radiohead: the group-worship will give an exclusive concert in the studios of MusiquePlus on June 2, one week before the very awaited world output of Hail to the Thief. Only from 150 to 250 lucky will have the occasion to attend this single event in Canada during which Thom Yorke and the brothers Greeenwood, Johnny and Colin, will speak about their new disc and will play some songs in acoustic formula.

"One asked them to play eight songs, but one does not know yet how much they will agree to make some", exposes Richard Gamache, director of the communications with MusiquePlus, obviously happy to have been able to obtain Radiohead of exclusiveness before the output in the disc. One knew of course that the album was come from there and that the group would be in promotion, then one contacted the company of discs. Our relations are good with EMI, one had it."

Radiohead is not declared yet artist of June in MusiquePlus, but it is not excluded that it becomes it. Reasons of management require that the artist of the month play at least six songs in waves, which is not confirmed yet in the case of the group of Oxford.

The passes will be allotted by way of competition based on the waves of MusiquePlus. "One wants to make sure that one will have truths fans group in studio", Mr. Gamache specifies. After the visit in studio of Sean Paul last week, whereas it trônait at the top of the prize lists, the arrival of Radiohead constitutes a good blow for the specialized chain.

After its stopover in Montreal, Thom Yorke and consorts will put the course on New York where it will give, June 5, a concert deprived for MTV, service which will be retransmitted on line by satellite in several Paramount cinemas in Canada. A reliable source announced to the Press that it was necessary little of them so that this concert takes place in Métropolis. Radiohead will give its first official concert in North America on June 7 within the framework of Field Day Music Festival, the weekend preceding the output by Hail to the Thief.
