Barney may be sometimes mocked for his simplistic lyrics but when he produces such emotive lines such as below we all remember just how powerful NewOrder lyrics can be :)

"Dont look into the sun, its not for me on anyone, to steal the light out of the sky.... is it really such a sin cause if it is then i'll give in, i cant live without your love"

This gem off Dream Attack is ironically off their most carefree, dancey and drug induced album! :P

I have to always go with the "I ran in the street where I was born" line from As It Is..., it's poignant when you consider his childhood neighborhood was torn down to expand a factory or something. Kind of "you REALLY can't go home again" and a fitting memorial to an idyllic childhood...

that whole song is great: the streets they are so empty at this time of night, i'd rather walk on my own than fight, in a world where i've forgotten you, i find myself Forgotten too....

very beautiful lyrics, my fav new order song by a country mile

Hello, everyone, it's nice to be here I've come so far to see you all I can see your deep blue eyes They sleep beneath the open sky Before you stands one like your brother Swear to God he needs no other But how can I afford to be Here with you so carelessly You know what you did was so unkind You search for the life we need to find There's right and there's wrong And there's good and there's bad And there's an answer to this I wish I had

Oh, you know what I mean, yes you do Oh, you know what I mean, yes you do

Run Wild Open hearts Empty spaces Dusty roads To distant places But all the time When I'm alone I think of you And how you've grown

Far and wide Sweet and simple Jehovah knows That I've been sinful

But if Jesus comes to take your hand I won't let go, I won't let go

I'm not cruel And you're not evil And we're not like All those stupid people Who can't decide Which book to read Unless the paper Sows deceit

You're the kind of person That I've always wanted to be with We'll you're really cool And you always say the right things to me But now I'll tell you something From my heart beats for you deep inside But never be a burden And my love for you will never die, never die, never die, never die, never die

But if Jesus comes to take your hand I won't let go, I won't let go

I always thought Sunrise lyrics are the most raw, direct, emotional lyrics Barney ever wrote to his father: "If you read between the lines you´ll hang your head in shame..." also like very much This Time Of Night lyrics. the "without you"s sound so sincere... and All Day Long. his interpretation makes you think HE was the beaten child...

Yep, Dream Attack's a good un. So is most of Technique though. Especially Love Less. And possibly others.

Subculture is also about, er, "touching".

And the opening to BLT is just superb simplicity.

Sorry if this is a little obvious but: I feel so extraordinary, something's got a hold on me. I get this feeling I'm in motion, A sudden sense of liberty.

Nothing in this world can touch the music that I heard When I woke up this morning...

and from the encore at the Apollo in 98

"How I wish you were here with me now."

[takes deep breath]

I know I'm going to get beaten for saying this, but these lines from "shellshock":

It's never enough until your heart stops beating The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain Don't give up again until your heart stops beating

:uhoh: :\ohwell: I happen to like "Shellshock" a lot..

"When you are alone at night You search yourself for all the things that you believe are right If you give it all away You throw away your only chance to be here today Then a fight breaks out on your street You lose another broken heart in a land of meat My friend he took his final breath Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death"

"Bury your head and silence your cry Know the feel of pain Join our world and play our game"

"My life ain't no holiday I've been through the point of no return I've seen what a man can do I've seen all the hate of a woman too"

Most touching?

"Tonight I should have stayed at home playing with my pleasure zone"

Every time I see you falling, I get down on my knees and pray im waiting for that final moment you'll say the words that I can't say.

Caressing the marble and stone love that was special for one the waste and the fever and hate how I wish you were here with me now...

aw, i was going to pick that one, but it wasn't written by Barney, so that's cheating.

I would agree with "dream attack" also.

Other than that i would say Procession:

here is no end to this I have seen your face But I don't recognize all these things You must have left behind

It's a problem, you know That's been there all your life I try to make you see the world without you That just so black and white

At night it gets cold and I'd dearly like to turn away The escape that fills that makes you want to turn on heel Alone, alone, alone, alone

There is no end to this I can't turn away Another picture but the scene It's still the same

There is no room to move Or try to look away Remember, life is strange The life keeps getting stranger every day

I try so hard but this attitude's A type that won't subside No matter what they say Remember your heart beats you day and night

Your heart beats you day and night Your heart beats you day and night Your heart beats you day and night

there are waaayyy too many but here are just a few of my favs....

It was always special It was like water down the drain I'm intoxicated Every time I hear your name I try to remember But nothing is the same It was always special it was like water down the drain

Patiently you wait for me You're so blind I thought it couldn't be Then changed my mind Drowning in the endless sea Line all those lines The traces of your memory Don't belong with mine

Ever since I've seen your face This life of mine has gone to waste I was young and you were old And I always knew you were cold At the start you had a heart But in the end you lost your friend Can you see your own dark face? It's dieing in a lonely place

Oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you I said, oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you

As we get old, we lose our place Reflecting back the world's disgrace I feel so low, I feel so humble Sometimes in life we take a tumble Don't let anybody tell you that you're no good Cause you know they would Don't let anybody tell you what you should do Cause it's not that way and...

Oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you I said, oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you We were young and we were pure And life was just an open door I said oh, oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you

You were me and I was you This world of ours it felt brand new You took me a little further... I heard it all before, I've heard it all before I can't hear it anymore Your hair was long, your eyes was blue Guess what I'm gonna do to you

Oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you I said, oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you We were young and we were pure And life was just an open door I said oh, oh, how I cannot bear the thought... Oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you I said oh, oh, how I cannot bear the thought of you We were young and we were pure...

There's not a hope While you're in this kind of mood Too much to drink But not enough to lose You tore me apart Now I've got to suffer I wish I'd been around when you started this

Give me a chance I'd show you what I could do You're in a trance And I'm not so fond of you You may be a friend But you're not my relation But you're the only person I ever knew

And it's too late to wash my hands We're caught in a trap Set for a man

There is a wind That blows in the northern skies Holding me back No matter how hard I try If I had the sense I'd leave here tomorrow I wouldn't even bother to say goodbye

But it's too late to wash my hands We're caught in a trap Set for a man

Would you lie to me If you thought I was wrong You deserted me When it all went wrong Would you lie to me Would you lie to me

Would you lie to me If you thought I was wrong You deserted me When it all went wrong

But it's too late to wash my hands We're caught in a trap Set for a man

My bad, the thread topic was New Orders most touching lyrics...so I thought it was fair game...sorry

and I thought of another one that gets to me:

up, down, turn around please dont let me hit the ground tonight I think I'll walk alone I'll find my soul as I go home

just something about it makes me sad

It states in 'An Ideal For Living' that Steve wrote Procession but it doesn't say whether they mean the music or the lyrics. I was always thought that "There is no end to this' was a great first line.

You are not alone, sir. Great lyrics, fit my life pretty well as of late. :D

Somehow ends up as #1 on Subsy's sing-a-long, don't know why.

IN RE Procession. I thought the intro keyboard part was written by Gillian and Steve for an art show or TV thingy. Any way the lrics as stated in An Ideal For Living gor..

"A mass of harmless attitudes, attack them or subside, No matter what they say or do your heart beats you late at night..."

I can't find my piece of mind Because I need you with me all of the time I used to think about you night and day I used to feel what language cannot say.

Some good answers so far!!!

I especially like..

Special - the "intoxicated" line lashes out so so hard...

As it is.. - "in a world where i've forgotten you, i find myself Forgotten too...." need i say more....

Face up - "we were young and we were pure and life was just an open door" Dont tell me that doesnt conjure up memories of when life was still such a game & without responsibilites!!

I always thought these lyrics read like this..

I WALK ALONG THE STREET I LOOK INTO YOUR EYES UNPLEASANT WHEN WE MEET NOR THERE WHEN YOU GO HOME

Suits Barney style better i reckon ;)

And dont knock Shellshock when its got a line like this in it... "The deeper you get, the sweeter the pain" magic :)

and lets not even start on Electronic.. thats for another thread ;) eg... Forbidden city Time will tell Getting Away With It

What, noone's mentioned Vanishing Point yet ?

I'll do it then:

Grow up children, don't you suffer At the hands of one another It be like a sleeping demon-but I always thought it was "if you like a sleeping demon" Listen can you hear him weeping?

Feel your heartbeat lose the rhythm He can't touch the world we live in Life is short but love is strong There lies a hope that I have found And if you try you'll find it too Remember why I'm telling you

And they gave him away Like in "Whistle Down The Wind" By the look on his face He never gave in

I loved the "Whistle Down The Wind" bit before, but I absolutely adore it now.

Interesting how an album born out of partying and recreational drugs brought so many touching lyrics to the world.

Who started the IN whistled down the wind?

I disagree totally - it's definitely IAN whistled down the wind.

And for a change I can back it up:lol: I know I have an interview from the 90's where Barney says it's about Ian, and the magazine puts the lyrics in bold type.

I will find this bloody thing sooner or later and will happily post the interview. Thank you, Good night;)

There was a time I call before When all I knew was what I saw The keeper of a major key I lived in a town called Liberty

I worked hard To give you all the things that you need And almost anything that you see I spent a lifetime working on you And you won't even talk to me

Can't you see Why don't you look at me It's not your right to be So much my enemy

I knew that I could never give You knew that you could not forgive No price or pride would fall before A ten foot wall without a door

But you know I watch every step that you make To find some other fool you can take And I don't know why I even try Because it all comes down to this

Can't you see Why don't you look at me It's not your right to be So much my enemy

Can't you see Why don't you look at me It's not your right to be So much my enemy

I worked hard To give you all the things that you need And almost anything that you see I spent a lifetime working on you And you won't even talk to me

I'm sorry Shug, but the lyrics in my mail are a copy-paste (only a bit shortened) from this site's song browser ! And Whistle is indeed written with the capital W-that's why I've recently made an enquiry about it ! So either the lyrics here aren't all correct, or Barney was in one of his moods during the interview.

Still, the lyrics are great either way, and still AMONG MY FAVOURITE.

What am I gonna do I feel like I'm on fire If you only knew That you're the object of desire

I keep hanging on, keep hanging on And I swear by God that you're the only one I keep hanging on, keep hanging on And I swear by God that it won't be long

My aim is true My vision is clear My thoughts are crude Whenever you're near

I keep hanging on, keep hanging on And I swear by God that you're the only one I keep hanging on, keep hanging on And I swear by God that it won't be long

I keep hanging on

You've got a vicious streak For someone so young You're like solar flair In the rising sun

I keep hanging on I keep hanging on I keep hanging on I keep hanging on

When they finally made it to Belfast, they openned the show with the words "it took us a while to get here but we got here in the end" and then played STYT, I took it as a very personal compliment ( even though I wasn't there, heard it on a tape) especially the bit about "to buy a drink there...."
