Just as we were informed that Steps were to cover Blue Monday(!!!!), Mixmag placed the BM at No 8 in their top 100 dance songs ever. The top 10 also contained Unfinshed Sympathy, Born Slippy, Cafe del Mar etc.
It is interesting to note that almost 20 years after it was released, BM still appears to be attracting attention in one way or another, even if to most of us that track is not their finest moment.
That's the one where they really staked their claim to fame. Never mind the shitty shitty cover versions designed to ruin it, Blue Monday's just got more endurance than most Eighties tracks.

But did any of you like the 1988 Quincy Jones re-mix? (remember 1988? How many GODAWFUL completely pointless '88 remixes came out that year?) Or the 1995 Hardfloor mixes? Pray do tell......
I think Orgy based their *god-awful* cover on the 88 one, based on the fact that the vocals come in a lot sooner than the original (Also, I'd be willing to bet the 88 was pared down slightly, for more airplay, you see). I like it a lot, the video for that has to be one of my favorites. I still crakc up when Barney's hit on the head by that tennis ball. Unscripted Moments That Make Comedy History, that one.

What else did it contain,I buy Muzik who I'm sure did one about a year or so back. Presumably the 'Cafe Del Mar' mentioned is the 'Energy 52' Track of that name, not the earlier,superior and rather more apt 'Mental Generation' one,populist bastards!

I saw Darren Emerson (ex Underworld) do a great 'funky house' DJ set at the End in London, and finished the whole set with Blue Monday...worked brilliantly and got the best reception of the night...not bad for a tune from '83

Blue Monday never ceases to amaze me. As a fan for years, I have grown to, not dislike the track, but have certainly become bored with it, as Im sure NO themselves are.
As lots of you know, I'm a teacher and when the pupils ask me what bands I like , and I say New Order, the response is usually a blank face (except for a few 6th Formers who have developed decent musical tastes). I inevitably end up singing Blue Monday to them, and within a few bars they usually join in, even the really young ones, ie:11 year olds.
It may be a track that has been over played to us, but for "outsiders" it still remains a total classic. Nice to know that most people (ie, the ones who haven't been blessed with the outstanding musical tastes of us lot) can still appreciate a cracking toon when they hear it.
As for other stuff, Underworld's Born Slippy is a stormer! I have vague memories of being totally off my face on my 21st birthday in a club dancing like a lunatic, shouting "lager lager" and generally misbehaving.....not like me at all...... oh, those were the days....

BM original is a classic. BM '88 was shit. It didn't do the original justice. BM '95 was even worse.
When I read this topic, I expected people to come up with their own lists of who are the best singles of all time, and it scared me off, because I couldn't come up with a list -- it's nearly impossible! I'd have to consider everything from DISCO to House, trance and pure techno.
I'd have to consider artists like Donna Summer (how could you do without her in such category?), Madonna, New Order, Depeche Mode, Men Without Hats (!!!), a whole load of one hit wonders, Technotronic, Captain Hollywood Project, Haddaway, SNAP (!!!), and a lot of the most recent crap.
One of the songs I would choose would be Desire by Roni Griffith, and another one would be Bizarre Love Triangle (BEFORE BLUE MONDAY !!!) -- as a matter of fact, I clearly remember someone describing, if not a member of New Order, Bizarre Love Triangle as being the ULTIMATE DANCE RECORD.

Boring tune till about the 7th minute. But then WHAT an ending! Classic track, and very enduring.
I think the whole point is its meant to be a bit boring up to that point...builds the tension!
Cheesey trance in itself itsn't bad music..it's just when it became so overexposed and had shit cash ins like Alice Deejay that it became a problem.
IMO the best dance album is of all-time is 'Leftism' by Leftfield and my favourite dance track is the NUXX mix of 'Dark and Long' that was the B-side to 'Born Slippy'.
This year the best dance song I've heard was 'Touch Me' by Rui Da Silva. Always thought the 'Touched by the Hand of God' mix on The Rest of album was immense as well.

Paul Oakenfold's "Goa Mix" - simply the best 2hrs of dance in the 90's. Dunno why it's called a 'Mix' though - not one track is mixed. Everything is faded in then out, or simply stopped and started. No rocket science thing whatosver.
Best tune of recent years - Binary Finary / 1998/9. Had this one blairing at as the new millenium took hold. Cheesey but suitable for the moment.

A better track is Gouryella by DJ Tiesto. Absolutely nails were Cafe del Mar just limps along. Similar build up at the end though.

heard in an interview with stephen morris (i think) that they stuck loads of things in that mix thining that they would be removed in the edit, but they were all left in, so not pared down at all!

Higher State of Consciousness by Josh Wink is a classic as well. I forgot about Adagio of Strings which is also the bees knees. The original classical tune was used in the Elephant Man if I remember rightly. Always wondered what happened to the Elephant Man. Made that one great film and never heard from him again. A sad waste of talent.

Finished Symphony is a classic track...I would personally class that as Prog or maybe Progressive breakbeat. Barbers' is a bit cheese but it's still an excellent uplifting trance tune.
I've got quite a few Progressive/Techno compiliations, and though I do like them a lot, I'd be hard pushed to name any 'classic' tunes off them

OK I was a bit harsh on Oakey, coz I know he's an important Dj and has done some good stuff...my opinion was based solely on watching him do a set at Clapham common earlier this year and it was dire-but then he was playing to about 30,000 people at the time.

I never understood the fuss about "Bullet In The Gun" - especially that Rabbit thingy mix. Absolute boe-lax. Lots of people seemed to like it though. And I never understood that whole "Perfecto FC" thang - seems to dumb-down dance muzak somewhat by giving it a 'label'. Still think Oaky's God, mind. He played the Gallery at Turnmills for the first time in ages 2 weeks back and even the members queue was 3hrs long. A class act on his day.

Do you go to Turnmills a lot Jarvo? Bit of a regular down there myself. I think Oakeys problem is he aims to be a bit too commercial nowadays, and fair play to him because he's earnt the right to do it. I just wouldn't choose to watch him now.
Tall Paul, Nick Warren, Sister Bliss, Jody Wiesternhof and Sander kleinenburg have been the best DJ's I've seen recently at Turnmills.

im a bit of a turnmills fan myself...although i havent been there for a while (not living in england anymore u see). the gallery nights are great (although erring a little on the commercial side as you said) but the headstartz techno nights are amazing...and there`s a lot of talent there too

Used to live in there about 3/4 years ago - literally - but temper it a lot more nowadays. You ever been to D-Pressure? You get a big crowd of Gallery regulars in there.
I haven't mate-I do like the Turnmills crowd though so I might check it out.
Don't think theres as much petrol in the tank as there used to be coz I can only handle it about once a month nowadays-and generally the Gallery nights on Friday so I get an extra day to recover!
Yeah, D-Pressure is a Saturday, so not much chance to recover at all. Though it is an earlier finish, although the after-party usually drags on for hours. Miss caning it as much as I used to at Turnies, then wandering off to Tinseltown till midday talking utter boe-lax. Steve Lee was always the best DJ down there - no fancy mixes, just big chooons for the nutters on the graveyard shift.
yeah Trying to be more responsible these days. I was reminiscing the other day that when I met my missus about this time last year I'd been up for about 50something hours and still looked presentable. Nowadays If I'm not wrapped up in bed by 4 I'm fucked for the whole of the next week...
