I really enjoyed this book. Yes there are sections where Morley lapses into the kind of pretentious crap that is interspersed at the start of each chapter of the "Ideal for Living" book (Morley was never credited for this but sure it was him). However, these bits are easily skipped and what remains manages the right balance between melancholy and humour. I was particularly struck by Morley's description of his father watching episodes of Fawlty Towers and not laughing because he could identify with Basil.

Buy "Nothing" by Paul Morley and at the same time buy "Where did it all go right" by Andrew Collins. This second book is an account by Collins of his blissfully happy 1970's childhood growing up in Northampton. Collin's book was written as antidote to all the books about people who have awful childhoods - it's very funny - I highly recommend both these books.
