Okay, what do you all think is the greatest mistake that New Order has made during their career?

Taking so long to put out another album.

Putting "Every Little Counts" on Brotherhood. Having "Blue Monday" remixed after 1988. Having two different (best of)'s released. "Rocking Carol" and "Ode to Joy". The (rest of) new order ever seeing the light of day.

Mr. Sumner's dancing

The three month US tour for Technique; I would imagine that wouldn't have been an easy one to get through, especially when some of the audiences had a number of clueless patrons, like the one in Portland.

They've made several over the years, but the biggest one was allowing Wilson to spend all their money fuelling his obsession with the Happy Mondays. He's still got it today. Shaun Ryder is the new WB Yeats my arse.

Other mistakes :

* staying with Factory after 83 * the Hacienda * Dry bar * all the drugs * working with John Robie * playing the same set every night since reforming * hiring Phil Cunningham instead of me

not pushing as hard in the west: NA & SA that is... look at what DM has now. they get some radio attention here, but their fans are maniacal: conventions, trashing record stores during signings, people bribing their way into the hotel room where Gahan O.D.'d... rampant american maniacs.

DM fans sound almost like... I hate to say it... Smashing Pumpkins fans, although I did not trash Tower Records for their signing in Philly 3 years ago.

Starting to put singles on albums. First mistake was the edit of The Perfect Kiss on Low Life. I suppose that would have made the album lopsided in length but they could have balanced it out with the full Elegia on the flip. I guess that wouldn't be a big deal now with most albums clocking in at 60-70 but I still prefer the good old days when albums were 40 minutes long with no filler.

all the remixes. every last one of them from the beach to whatever crap has come out lately. take some control, don't just cash a check.

came to Hong Kong at the time I was only 3 years old. They appeared on the local TV programme. They should plan an Asia Tour now, they got many fans here.

I think Taboo #7 posted at least 1000 before he broke down and bought Techique.

their biggest mistake was definitely refusing my invitation to play a private gig in my back garden

We've got some right howlers here.

Can I add:

• The whole "Retro" disk 5 fiasco.
• Never doing a proper round-up of the non-LP tracks.
• Letting the bad vibes around Factory get the better of them.

I'm deliberately refraining from mentioning songs I don't like, cos making mistakes along the way goes hand in hand with innovation, but I think most of us would agree that "Republic" was a bad move.
