What was the best deal you ever got on a NO/related item?

I got Late at Night (unreleased UK version) CD1+2 and Promo for £16 at Leeds 2000. Beat that!

Easy.

My mum wrote to Factory records when I was knee-high to a grasshopping unit and they sent her a gold Factory records badge for free!!! - I wore that badge with pride the day the music died (when Factory collapsed).

I got 'Way of Life' US 12" for 50p too. I also bought Hooky for £17.29 and a can of Stella. He sits in the corner of my room playing the LWTUA riff over and over. I let him out to do gigs occasionally.

You know, Major, that image nearly caused me to have a stroke from laughing.

I can't bear it. I may have to go home sick.

Can you sue me if you have a stroke from laughing? I hope not. I might have to sell Hooky to pay for my court case.

Major, my recommendation would be that you include the "also"; I think that is an important part of the picture. You know, Hooky wasn't the main thing you bought.

Well, if you think that was weird......check this. In 1988, at a Factory Records - related ephemera auction, I managed to get hold of three plastic /fibreglass blancmanges on plates each standing about 1 foot high, plus a similar fibreglass meat pie on a plate - about the same size. I was baffled initially as to the significance of these items until I realised : then it hit me - they were clever cryptic representations of the four members of New Order themselves: The three blancmanges are Barney, Steven and Gillian. The meat pie, of course, was Hooky!!! To add the icing on the cake (or the pie, if you like) the "Hooky" pie had two viking horns sticking out of the "pastry" lid....and if that doesn't speak volumes then I don't know what does!. Consequently these four items have been rendered by myself in 2-D Andy Warhol-style pop-art and they've adorned my bedroom studio ever since: Indeed, my 1994 CD compilation : New Order Dirty Dozen - an entry I submitted for a competition in "SELECT" magazine to win an exclusive one-off signed New Order CD compilation of your own chosen 12 fave tracks (a few of you folks may recall and testify to this I'm sure)- features the four images on the front sleeve design.
How's that for sheer oddity??

By popular demand I have changed my signature. So if Hooky is worth £17.29 (excluding the cans of Stella for sake of sanity), how much are the rest of the band worth?

Somehow the effect is just not the same with the other members of the band, except maybe Barney.

A good price for Barney might be 9.99. I don't think my keyboard can do the symbol for pounds.

I suppose the best "deal" I ever got was when me and two mates - collectively known at the time (1987) as The Singing Curtains - went to Factory's old offices on Palatine Road to give them a demo tape of our painstaking, not to say painful, efforts.

We went into the offices - chaotic as you would expect - and the sound that greeted us was the as-yet-unreleased TBTHOG on the turntable. We gave them the tape, chatted for a while and they gave us loads of ace Fac posters - yes I know they were probably dying to get rid of them.

We asked what wasa happening with the Stockholm Monsters only to have our world torn apart by the news that the singer was "inside" as they say.

I think it was Alan Wise we spoke to ( although my memory may have made that bit up ) and a very friendly young lady.

All in all - a crap demo in exchange for an exclusive airing of NO material, inside info on the monsters and Factory freebies - a good swap I'd say. Noel Edmonds and Posh Paws eat your heart out

i found a few 7"s yesterday. State of the nation w/ Shame on the flip. Hooky interview picture disc (15min interview circa 83 but no date listed) and World In Motion....all on 7". Last month i bought Perfect Kiss 12" and Confusion 83 12" for $4 each (approximately). While in London in 94, i bought a Ruined In A Day T-shirt for 3pounds near Picadilly Circus.

I found Movement and Low-life on vinyl, and the original 7 inch of True Faith with 1963, at this record store that was going out of business. Can't remember what I paid overall, but it wasen't too bad, everything was marked down. This was the same store where I got Heart and Soul, Here Are The Young Men, and the RCA "Warsaw" album.

Ordered Joy Division's Atmosphere on Factory US from Rough Trade US, and they threw in a copy of the flexi-disc as well as a couple of badges. More recently, I suppose I would say that I was surprised that I found a US copy of Regret on 7" for 2 dollars. Flipside is the New Order Mix of the song, which is nice, but a bit lightweight.

This is probably no big deal to you guys but Dreams Never End the story of New Order + Joy Division. I bought it a day before the music store closed so I was lucky. I haven't seen this book anywhere else in Sydney so I assume it's pretty rare here.

Have any of you guys seeked out the rare 1995 12" single released by Touch-Tone records of New Order's early - rather intriguingly skeletal-sounding - demo of PC&L centrepiece "5-8-6" entitled "Video 5-8-6" ? It's 22-minutes long with a three minute reprise on the flip. A most unusual - and indeed obscure - release. Who else has got hold of a copy? Are these now rarer than Rocking Horse Shit?

Just a couple of corrections Marty surely the past tense of seek is sought(have you had a long day?) and the centrepiece of P.C.L. is 'The Village'. It sounds like the ultimate prize for the brain teazer though.

Yes. in a limited edition digi-pak. Though all Igot was the 12" vinyl (I usually by all my Order stuff on both formats - CD, 12" and 7" wherever possible - saddo that I am....)

I know the cassette came out in a limited edition white book-bound box with the Factory Inserts inside (I got one of them the month of release), but this gatefold vinyl one is a rare one indeed.....

HOW ABOUT THIS BARGAIN....I BOUGHT 2 COPIES!..NOT ONE...BUT 2 COPIES of MARK JOHNSON's book called 'AN IDEAL FOR LIVING-An History Of Joy Division' in a Sydney bookshop for only $5 each..for approx. 1.75 pounds UK....

Has lots of B+W photos but probably those excessive Paul Morley's rants splashed throughout the book that put everyone off..and sent them to bargain bin...

Thieves Like Us 7" All at once - Stockholm Monsters Tell Me - Life (They were all released in the same month) all FREE from our local radio station! I'd been reviewing the week's releases for them.

BTW, the Gatefold Substance was a limited edition of 1000 intended for Factory employees only. I've got a copy but it cost me dear!

As I said elsewhere, I have a box with Low Life's tape (and all the Perfect Kiss versions as bonus tracks) and pictures of the band, different from the CD or the LP, on postcard format.

I got that book in Edinburgh about 5 years ago. Not a bad book although the author is a touch too enthusiastic for my liking. Always remember that the book came out after Republic, at the time when it looked like New Order would never reform. It ended with the words "Don't worry they'll be back". How prophetic those words were!

Yep, but it was nothing special, I gave it away in the end.

Well my best New Order related purchase leaves all the previously mentioned crap well in the shade, and it did'nt even cost me anything, well not initially although there was lots of 'investment' over the years. My wee dog, who I named Barney after some front man or other from some obscure pop group was THE greatest New Order related purchase ever. That lovely dog, how he trusted and loved me, he was my best pal and he was there all the way from Low-Life to Get Ready. My god Barney must have known the New Order back catalogue every bit as well as me, although he was a lot better at sleeping through it! Anyway folks, my lovely wee dog is gone. Today the doggy angels came and took him away to the great lamp-post in the sky, nearly 18 years old, and one of the longest serving New Order fans around. As I sit here typing this with tears streaming down my face I can't help but think of Barney and all the years we had together and of how he was the greatest New Order related purchase ever!
