Problem with AVI Files

I use Winamp 5.09 for music and video files and recently uninstalled Divx due to hearing it is spyware/adware. Now, I'm unable to view .avi files, including a handful of New Order files from here.

Under preferences it's enabled for "all" but still no luck. I can get the sound on MOST of the files (some I can't) but not video! Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to re-d/l Divx again if it's some type of malware. What about DirectX? Is that something similar that is needed? None of my other media players work either, such as Irfan or Windows Media Player or Quicktime.

MPG and WMV work okay though. Just not AVI. Any suggestions?

Thousand thanks!

You need Divx to play AVI files. Simple as that. The codec uncompresses the video files so you can watch it.

Thx for the reply, Pope. Have you had any spyware/adware related problems, though, with DivX? I think I read somewhere that if you just download the codec and not the bundle or the player, you won't get the spyware/adware. I'm hoping that's the case.

I've recently cleaned the spyware off my computer, but no idea where it came from originally. Had gotten a nasty spyware virus from someone. Anyway, the DIVX player is pretty good and worth downloading. You can always sweep for spyware afterward.
