The Wish List NewOrderOnline v5.0

Archived

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

2 weeks off now, I'll be working finally on the next version of NOOL, it will be reconstructed completely.

So if you have a wish, it's time to put it in that thread... (please keep on topic or I will delete messages)

Thank you.

Can I have the option to see solely the threads or even messages that I left myself in threads? Like a list.

Clicking on a member's name/ID to show maybe 10 - 20 latest posts would be a good feature.

Sort out the polls/voting

Search by forum - user name/topic

Get rid of the hanging-on false private messages

Update smilies/sounds in the chatroom

Maybe a NOOL picture gallery (moderated) for members to upload gig pics, Vikings pics, Pre-gig meet-up pics, members' own designs, etc. browsable by every signed-up member but not 'guests'. I'd be happy to moderate it. Sensibly!

All good work Nic. Keep it up mate and if you need a hand with anything, let me know

Think its been said before, but a gig indicator would be good, so you could select which ones you've been to etc.

Having a band called New Order to which this site would relate?

That's actually something I wanted to do a long time ago.

Something I've seen on other forums which would be nice would be to be able to hover over a thread title and see the first few bits of text in the messages in a popup.

take out the "insert link" thing and just allow automatic links when posted!!!!!!

So that's no on the vid cam Nic?:brow:

but a search engine for individual forums would be nice. There have been a few times I've tried to find old posts and it takes forever to find....

also, if we could advance the forum pages fast, trying to advance them just a couple pages at a time does take forever when trying to find a post year or older...

That is true nic, but have you ever tried to find someone in there? Takes awhile as there are so many one-time-sign-ups, that never return to the site that finding people can be like finding a needle in the haystack.

Is there a way to delete members that don't show up for many years?

I second that:)

I forgot...

  1. Increase the number of picture allowed for "ordinary" members. How come only 5? Or maybe increase it as your posts gets bigger.

  2. For the members by country, have us the option to sort the list by (a) alphabetical order, (b) by number of posts, (c) by date registered / member since, and maybe (d) by logon count. It's hard to search for members of countries with many members for it is only arranged alphabetically

  3. For inactive members, I disagree with Edel to delete inactive members. What I can suggest is that you can greet them on their e-mail during their birthdays, just like one forum-site I've joined since 2001. As least, they will be reminded that they are a member/registered here.

  4. And last one: every log in of a member increases his/her logon count by 2, not by one. And as I noticed, it increases unconditionally while you are online, or you forgot to logout. I know it was mentioned before in the technical forum.

Anyway, the last two are minor issues.

I have so many grievances. Grrr. NOOL Rules!:thumb:

Get rid of all the gayspace stuff like 'friends' and PM's. I really don't see the point.

Also, delete posts longer than, say, a year. I really don't understand how anyone's age-old thoughts on the subjects of New Order, or otherwise, can be of benefit to anyone long-term. In fact, I find it rather creepy.

The friends option is very gay, but PMs are useful for contacting folks without clogging up the forums with posts which have are completely irrelevant to most... Although by that logic you'd have to get rid of the whole of BCD... :evil4:

Fookin' close it down, get rid of all the shite and start a smaller version that has accurate things on it :evil4:

Seriously,

* Massively trim the forums, completely re-engineer the forums so that all posts after a month or something are archived or removed.

* Get rid of the visibility of the post counts, or atl east make their visibility an option controlled by the user.

* Either get the live pages and gig database correct or delete them and link to Sam's pages, as they are not only a load of shite but also perpetuate incorrect info. That database is still fucking up on Procession, has done since Day 1 and has been reported more times than the band have done encores.

* Get rid of that totally pointless "friends" thing.

* Delete all the dormant members after giving them a chance to post by sending them a link warning of deactivation unless they reply within 7 days.

* Remove all the extraneous content, like things that started as a good idea and ended up not getting past first base. You all know what I mean.

* Get them shite blogs off the site, mine included.

* Make it 100% certain that nothing posted on this site by any member can be picked up by Google or other search engines. You don't need to be demonstrating metadata capabilities for CV purposes now.....

* Give the mods a few tools for improving the site's content, like the capacity to delete the spammer (obviously such action would need regulation, easily done) and the ability to put the inflammatory poster on a yellow.

* Actually, just knock it on the head, they ain't coming back, those who want to socialise together know how to, and those who want to talk shite will always be able to find a way.

Pointless though. The last one only succeeded to the extent it did (and it made less than half the money I had hoped it would) because people were in London already for the gig the night before. If you want to see Re: Order play, they will no doubt be doing some gigs soon. Digital no longer exist, nobody batted an eyelid over their demise anyway, we can hardly ask Hooky to donate another DJ set fee, or Pottsy and Flight to give their time so readily.

Now if the Order were to reform and do a couple of dates somewhere, it might be feasible. Best find some mug to organise it though!

Kill the post counts.

Display links to all recent posts by a member once you click on their name/profile.

Totally disagree. What should happen instead, if Nic really has the two weeks to turn it round and make it something that retains the interest of the people, then some of the most commonly used topics should be distilled and turned into an embellished FAQ that is both accurate and reflects the populice. The wealth of photos could be added to an enhanced photo gallery that becomes a useful resource. Old posts need to be deleted. The post counts can stay for those that are obsessed by them, at least the option to display your credentials as a mega poster, if that is what floats your boat, they needn't go down when posts are removed - set the current count as being the base level, and all new posts go up from there.

Server space will be enormusly helped by getting rid of the thousands of dormant accounts. I just had an email from the Bob Mould site asking me to log in again or face deletion, it's dead easy to do and will sort the wheat from the chaff. It's no kudos measure having thousands of people who are registered but never ever log in!

In total agreement with Timbo here. I really do not like the wealth of personal history which is retained here. It's a bit unnerving. I cannot see why anyone would want to go back through posts from more than one month ago, let alone from years. I wouldn't want to.

Yes, there is the odd fact or interesting comment on New Order thrown up amongst the white noise but - let's face facts - considering the band are, basically, no more, the forums do illicit a lot more random chat these days, and I don't see why that needs retaining.

I post heavily on another forum, one which I've belonged to before this one was in existence and it has a lot heavier throughput. They retain maybe 100 threads at any one time there, and then they're lost to the ether. I'm far more comfortable with that.

But is it? You are rather missing the point. First of all, they take up masses of bandwidth, slowing the site down and costing those who contribute financially to the site more money (historically, before the site became infested with fookin' adverts).

Secondly, the info contained within is available to the whole world with a simple google search - I have no wish for anyone at all, be they fellow NO fans, internet stalkers or prospective employers to put my name into google and come up with a load of pissed shit I wrote 5 years ago, for example!

There is simply no need to keep all the forum threads that have been here for several years.

Can't agree that there's "simply no need" to keep the older threads, especially those in Digital Republic and Ceremony.

If they're significantly slowing down the site then that's one issue.

But some of us do find them useful from an archival perspective. Reflecting on how posters perceived new releases or reacted to news as it happened. Having the facility to review previous posts during a dispute. Or simply mulling over people's ruminations and experiences of New Order.

May not be something everyone does, but some will and do find it of use.

Again, I'm sorry, but as I've said earlier, I just find this rather creepy.

This week I've mainly commented on football, Spooks and admitted I knocked one out over BowWowWow single covers 25 years ago.

These are not really the sorta things I really want recording for posterity.

But then I shouldn't really have to temper my posting here as a result.

Perhaps those of us who've posted here for a long time, and posted a lot for a long time should be given the option of bulk-deleting their own posts from way back? There used to be a search option where you could at least find what people said.

Actually, that's a thought - get the 'search' facility working.

Fail to see it, really. It's just reviewing history for me. Relecting on how people perceived albums, experienced concerts, and so on.

However I can recall you had some problems with private issues being dredged up through older threads re-surfacing, so perhaps your perspective is different.

El Jarvo wrote:

This is probably the key difference. Some do temper their posting with the understanding that it's a public forum. I generally keep personal stuff out of here, especially the NO-related forums. This isn't to say that I haven't looked back and wished some comments away, but perhaps not to the extent of others.

I can understand some motives to cull the non-related, and often more candid BCD gunk, but not the NO-related forums. It's what this website's all about. Older perspectives on NO aren't any less valid and there's a wealth of historical data there.

That's not really the issue but, yes, I suppose some of us do socialise away from these forums and a lot of personal stuff / photos / etc do then get posted up here.

Frankly, I'd rather it was all removed. I don't tape people's conversations when I'm out on the sauce, then replay them a couple of years later, so inane stuff posted on here has no need to be brought up again, or retained.

If people want to submit 'official' reviews of albums or gigs or whatever, or if people want to submit blogs then there's no reason why these cannot be retained, but general chit-chat, or indeed just general comments about the band or a live performance don't really hold any sway.

Get rid of the releases/live images that load randomly at the top of each page, or have them properly rescanned and sized so the image quality isn't so poorly degraded. They look terrible 90% of the time.

ALSO, can you reformat the forums to allow replying to individual comments? It's really a pain to be reading through a post and have huge chunks of previous comments quoted just so two or three people can follow a conversation. LiveJournal and forums like The Huffington Post do it:

-Original comment -----sub-comment -----sub-comment ----------sub-comment-comment ----------sub-comment-comment -----sub-comment

...and so on.

Get rid of chatrooms- The whole site is a chatroom.

Get rid of the blogs- They don't seem to sit well, unless they are generating additional traffic and ad revenue.

The pm's and the chatroom allow for some privacy, which you actually mention later when you are talking about being able to delete posts.

If you don't like the chatroom don't go in, better have it than have the boards filled up with chit chat, there is more than enough of that on bcd as it is.

The PM's were introduced as away to cut down on members leaving messages for just one or two peoples attention on the boards, as not everyone wants to share their email address and the PM's mean you don't have to.

Never NEVER get rid of the chatroom. It prevents many of us who would otherwise post several ridiculous messages on BCD cluttering up the boards. The Chatroom IS used. Mainly by around 10 people, on and off, but there's nothing to stop others joining in. One of the features of NOOL that I enjoy most :thumb:

Definitely keep one or the other then... PM's would be my choice.

If we each had the option to kick out everyone we didn't get along with there'd be absolutely no one left here after the cull! :eek3:

"When I am King......"

so said Thomas Yorke one fine evening.

But then he also said

"in my opinion, which is of no consequence at all".

An ignore option works wonders, particularly if you can ignore whole continents!

I like the idea of being able to add the gigs you've done to yer profile. The only reason I have that avatar is so I can remember which one's I've done without looking them up.

Could they then appear against the said gig in the live section so you know who else was there?

I like that idea, it will help whenever I get round to doing my final blogs for the last tour. If anyone can remember what I was uptae, send us pics and a mail

ALSO, can you reformat the forums to allow replying to individual comments? It's really a pain to be reading through a post and have huge chunks of previous comments quoted just so two or three people can follow a conversation. LiveJournal and forums like The Huffington Post do it:

-Original comment -----sub-comment -----sub-comment ----------sub-comment-comment ----------sub-comment-comment -----sub-comment

...and so on.

 This is the thing that really bugs me. Quote one comment people!

I tried to add a longish reply to a thred just a few mins ago. When i submitted, it was all gone. I had to start again from scratch...Can this be improved?

If you're typing a long message copy it from time to time, so you can paste it if you lose it - if you leave your answer for a couple of minutes without typing owt, it gets sucked into cyberspace and floats off into the ether...

I've only read the first couple of pages of this so sorree if it's been posted before. Anyone who suffers from the time-out thing should think about downloading (for free) Firefox. Not only does it never time out when writing posts, it's also got an on-board spell-checker!

Sew, no moar timing owt and no mowr bad speling.

Got to be worth it

Do I win £40?

Also, delete posts longer than, say, a year. I really don't understand how anyone's age-old thoughts on the subjects of New Order, or otherwise, can be of benefit to anyone long-term. In fact, I find it rather creepy.

The PM is for people cloaking their email address.... but the next version should have email notifications.

I admit the friend thing is very bad... slow day that way :(

Not like NOOL is facebook :p

Ok I have read most of the things posted here and did a small list.

I understand the privacy issue, but there is a simple way to "block" google to access the forum... but obviously when I do that, it stops us from using Google to SEARCH NOOL itself... which is the big point behind that.

I know for sure *I* do searches myself to find old information from time to time, I gave up on the internal search function a long time ago due to that.

Personally I don't mind old threads, I kind of hate the idea of losing all of them due to the fact that it's, well, some kind of "history"...

But then again, I will check on Google if I can make sure no thread older than x days get indexed.

Here are a few things I noted:

  • I want to make the profile page looking like a myspace/facebook profile... by that I mean it will have your "history", where all the threads you have started are visible (well, last ones obviously) and eventually gig you were, and other interestings things. I will try to make it customizable, and obviously it can be cloaked for privacy.
  • Search in forum... will try to do one that works and doesn't take forever to load
  • Filter to see only the thread you participated into
  • Gig Indicator... as I said, in profile you'll have your gig count... (if you want to, obviously)
  • Ignore function - obviously not a rush, but I've been asked this for ages
  • Better member browsing system...
  • A purge of the old members with a reminder that their account will be deleted (though to be honest, I hate this because it's my newsletter database, but I can deactivate their account so they don't appear in the member browser though)
  • Online/Offline indicator
  • Enhance the forum with a few feature people wrote... I heard you.
  • Allow member photos submissions

Due to the lack of upcoming events, I might add some kind of "community events", so people wanting to advertise get togethers, or re order gigs, stuff like that, can... mostly it's simply allow people to enter "upcoming events" with some kind of validation system.

And obviously, I want to give some people more "power" over the content of this website..

v5 will be a major upgrade since we're moving from .NET 1.1 to 2.0 (and even possibly 3.5), so don't expect to see everything moved at first... so many features might not be back for a while once we do the switch... obviously the news/forum system are the "must be there" items.

Since many people seem to be using the chatroom (which is totally independant from nool, so I have no control over it), maybe it would be a good idea to take a bit of the money the ads are getting us to buy the commercial version... I will look into that.

But that's something else... NOOL *might* suffer from less ad revenues due to the lack of New Order activity, hopefuly this won't cause any problem, but we'll see how it goes... I'm happy the site is self-sufficient, but we will need to reopen the shop at some point.

Rename the site badlieutenant.com :evil4:

I'd like Biography, Discography and Lyrics restructured. For example separate Joy Division from New Order records, divide the biography in years and add content (there used to be a calendar on the home page with a history event for each day, you could just place them all in a longer biography). I think that if you're moving to Web 2.0 you could this by using tags as well.

I second the site name.

Now, can someone please revamp the blog site so that I can my old entries for good, including the dates, and start all over?

Ignore the idiots. Let them start a 'Badlieutenant.cum'

Bet most of them can't even pronounce 'lieutenant' :evil4:

All sounds good Nic. Email me if you want proof-reading or editing.
