What is all the fuss about Temptation - I've never understood why it is so revered. Blue Monday, on the other hand, is the single most important record of the 1980s and deserves to win for that alone. That and the fact that is a still as astonishing a piece of music as it was when I first heard Peel play it 23 years ago.
Temptation - again whatever version, my second fave NO track, so this was guaranteed a vote unless it came up against Love Vigilantes...

Normally I'd go for Temptation here, but I've played it to death the last few years. It really is an amazing song, especially some of the earlier live versions....
BUT! Blue Monday doesn't get much love round these parts ("beacuse it's shit" I hear you say...), but let's face it, it was one of the most groundbreaking songs of all time, seemingly stumbled upon by accident (and a better version apparently deleted by Steve) because they didn't want to do encores...so to me it perfectly encapsulates the human element of New Order that I love so much.
Plus I thought that at Brixton last year (my first proper NO gig) it sounded immense. So BM it is.
I'm no Blue Monday hater, but Temptation is at least two leagues above it musically and lyrically.
More points from BM for it's plodding presence in every live encore for years, the fact that even the band slag it off and the stupid 'ironic' dancing that students do whenever it comes on at the 10p a pint night. Further marks deducted for being the only song that a lot of people have heard of and more still for the 'famous' story of the cover that every lazy journo trolls out in his 'Phoenix From the Ashes' biogs of the band.
Hey, maybe I AM a BM hater!
In spite of all the criticism that's thrown at Blue Monday these days, it is actually the one piece in New Order's live set that has been changed around the most throughout the years. There are the early instrumental versions at the end of 1982 and the ones that attempt to sound like the 12". There are the short TOTP ones and the 1984 ones that used bits from TPK drum patterns. There are the orchestral samples they used at the end of 1985 to liven up the whole thing, there are versions where Barney makes great noise and solos with his guitar (for instance Leuven 1985 and Warrington 1986); there are the huge operatic samples they used in 1987 and 1989, at the end of 1989 they had even added some house piano to it. And it keeps on changing to this day with the Kylie samples and the main keyboard figure from TPK that they used last year, and other stuff as well.
Not to mention the times they fucked it up, goop's clip from Ayr 1983 is an extreme example. ![]()
Having said that, I'm still a bit sick of the piece and therefore voted for Temptation. That's nearly always been a highlight every time they've played it and that's true to these days as well; some of the 2005 gigs may sound tired almost throughout but Temptation always lights up both the crowd and the band.
BM is brilliant although can get a bit boring but having said that I played it twice in succession in the car yesterday and it reinforces my impression that it is brilliant. Temptation is a very good singalong song. Brilliance v very good.
Bad one this. Voted BM as it was the song which got me into NO. Played more times than Temptation although the latter is better live these days.
I don't hate Blue Monday...feck, I'm not even tired of it...
but I still have to vote for Temptation...

I agree with you. And they killed BM's spririt with all these useless remixes (I am probably sick of it since I heard the second CD of the rest of of New Order - a very bad experience I remember... somekind of La Grande Bouffe)

But that is the beauty of an open draw - you never know what will crop up at any stage. Manure vs Liverpool in the 4th Round is a great match, and also gives the other teams a better chance as one of the favourites is going out. Here, there is thus a better chance for one of the other songs to progress to the Quarters if not better because of the loss of Blue Monday (and Dreams Never End) early on.
God, this is so hard. I like both! Temptation is neat, but Blue Monday was a breakthrough. I guess I'll go along with BM.

bowel movement?!?!?!
Easy choice for me, I'm feeling blue but the temptation is far too strong to resist. Temptation for me

make it three. I never get tired of hearing Blue Monday on the radio, overplayed as it may be, still miles ahead of most other tunes.

Generic, how come you have to gross my posts out? First was my church sign, and now this. :o
gotta be BLUE MONDAY, without BLUE MONDAY as their breakthrough, there would be no NEW ORDER!
BLUE MONDAY is NEW ORDER! ![]()
(!) funny, when it is played live, it's nostalgic! ...Been there, seen it & experienced it. so why do (neworder) "hate & sick of it" because they can't get enough of IT!

Temptation. Blue Monday is a fabulous groundbreaking song, that it is. It will make me get out and dance in a club unfailingly. Temptation, however, beautiful little Temptation, is just ferocious. It's the sort of song when you hear it anywhere, you want to dance right then and there. Temptation is euphoric.
