Everything's Gone Green: Hit or Miss?

I never really appreciated EGG at the time. I sort of skipped over it at the time of Ceremony, Procession, Temptation etc. and it was the live track I never wanted NO to play.

Funny thing now is that's it's the track I play most often from Substance.

Looking back, it may be the single most important track New Order ever did as it bridged the gap between JD/Ceremony on the one hand, and NO/Temptation on the other. Without EGG there would have been no Temptation and no Blue Monday.

What do you all think? Or has this been done before?

I can't speak authoritatively about JD/NO, BUT I loved EGG from the first time I heard it (on Substance).

Definately groundbreaking, the marriage of sequencer lines and guitar, with Hooky thrown in for good measure. One small step for man, giant leap for new wave. Stuff of that nature.

They used drum machine in Joy Division's days too and it sounds quite similar. Procession is the beginning of New Order without the shadow of JD behind.

One of the most pivotal tracks written by NO and definately a big nod towards Blue Monday and other more sequence-driven NO.

After i got "Blue Monday" (in 1983) i bought the "Factus 8" ep (or the "81/82" ep as it is sometimes refered to) and, for me the stand-out track at the time was EGG, i kept listening to it over and over, loving the way the bass-line wound me up at the start and the drum-beat calmed me down at the end. The song was a sign that newOrder were over the death of their friend Ian Curtis and coming into their own.

EGG is exactly like them when it was recorded : something between JD and NO. But, fur sure, is a great music. :p

After I heard NO for the first time, The Beach in 1983, I went and bought all the NO I could at that time. EGG was part of that purchase, Factus 8. I still love the song. It has a most haunting sound for such a ground breaking song. Yes it was vital, new move in instrumentation. Lyrics still beg of JD but a move forward. Temptations lyrics were the clear break.

My least favourite track on Substance. Much prefered Procession and personally think this was the breakthru song (even has female backing vocals).

Have always loved it from the very first, one of my top 15 NO songs ever, I love to put on the 12" and crank the volume, like now, and watch the walls shake.

There was a review in Creem magazine way back when that commented that this song was a breakthrough for NO on their way to overcome the shadow of JD.

BTW, I did not nick my name from the song either.

Vital. EGG is of the same ilk as "Temptation", "Blue Monday", and "Confusion" amongst the singles. The guitaring, the bass, keyboards all helped New Order step out of Joy Division's shadow. What an excellent and underrated track, too. Now I'm gonna have to go listen to it. :D

I LOVE EGG!!! it's definately inbetween NO & JD. Hooky's bass playing is superb on that one, Barney's razor sharp guitarwork is perfect. For some reason it seems to have an otherworldly scifi feel to it. Quite an aggressive track for NO I think, that's what draws it nearer to the darker JD era. It's one of my favourite tracks on Substance after Temptation.

This is classic New Order,Ceremony was JD after all. Without this there`d be no Temptation.

Absolutely essential.

I reckon it's perhaps the most important 5 minutes in NO's history, even more so than BM, as it provided that bridge between the tentative use of electronics that JD started using and the eventual heavy that NO would go on to emply. EGG was evidence that NO could base a track around electronics but could still find room for guitar and bass, and, most inmportantly, a song in there too. And it's got a great title too!

Personally, it's always been one of my favorite NO tracks.

I think it's important because it's the start of the transition to the NO sound...PC&L perfects that sound. But that's just my opinion.

maybe not a pop "Hit" ... but an essential track, a great track, a groundbreaking track, a well produced track, certainly vital to the JD/ NO fan

An absolute essential, that live experimentation propelled them through much of the 80s, without it, kiss Temptation/586/Blue Monday/Pefect Kiss goodbye!

I know this is an old poll, but the importance of EGG to NO development is evident in the fact that the track was first released as a B side to Procession, before being promoted to an A side in its own right. They obviously recognised that this was the direction they were moving in.

It's a great track and I've always loved it. The version at Glasto 81 as mentioned by Digital Mike, is fantastic.

Absolutely bloody essential. How brilliant is this song? Have a few beers and try not to sing "It seems like I've been here before" at the top of your voice. Impossible.

Never used to be a huge fan - sandwiched as it was between Ceremony and Temptation on Substance, but it kinda makes sense in that context - as a transition and a bloody good one it is to... The Factus 8 mini-LP is fast becoming one of my favourite line ups of NO tracks and EGG plays a big part in that...

Dammit, I love this song. It's probably one of my favorites, if not my favorite New Order Song. Other people have said why it's good and I can't be bothered typing it.

Are the ADVENT remixes of EGG anygood. I've found a couple of places that have copies of the CD and was wondering if it's worth buying?

ALl of those have 1 copy, each. They say they are CDS, but in discography on this site it only lists 12". I'm confused

everythings gone green is a great song and a move forward ,,but then they were always moving forward. loved how it used to be played back to back with temptation live and joined up. lyrics had a hint about them as well.

I first heard the song in 1988, and I really didn't care about it. But later on, when you become really knowledgeable about music, you will realize that its an amazing "new beat" way back in 1981.

I'm quite surprised about lots of the reactions about EGG. It has always been one of my favourite NO songs, perhaps because I bought it when it came out and I was still "forming" my musical tastes. My mates all took the piss out of it and out of me for listening to it. But I stuck to my guns and 26 years later most of them still agree it's a good track. I actually played it at my 40th birthday party to great reactions.

We used to have lots chin scratching discussions about whether Procession or EGG was better. For me it was EGG (I love Procession equally, though) because I was just always fascinated by synthesizers and sequencers and tight programmed rythmns. In fact I still like to mess about with my old arpeggiators- pity I don't have an ARP Quadra though!

Agree with all the comments about early live versions where the lyrics, melody and structure were developing (I really love it that NewOrder were happy to let a song evolve live over a period of time) And I really love to hear sequed versions of EGG and Temptation on bootlegs

EGG is just pure class really. Preferable to Temptation IMHO
