Paul Young's cover of 'LOVE WILL TEAR US APART'.

Found this on a CD single in a charity shop yesterday. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Anyway;

1. Best Bit; Barney guitar impersonations at the end.
2. Worst Bit; The woman who talks here and there...
3. Why you love / hate it; Love and hate it. Very surreal and humourous at the same time; trying to imagine Paul Young as a punk is a great stretch of the mind...
4. A percentage rating; 60%
5. Can you name someone else famous who has done a NO cover (excluding community discs)?

Id love to hear this cover version. But its not on the usual donwload sites.

Well, way back then (1983), my uncle did buy the 'No parlez' album of Paul Young with the said cover. It was all right (well the original is unmatchable anyway)and always considered it a nice tribute, nothing more. On the other side, The CURE 2000's rendition of it on Triple J (or something) Aussie radio is a Gem I think.

Absolutely fucking horrid! HORRID HORRID HORRID! The whole thing is repulsive - in the most decadently, stereotypically, disgustingly EIGHTIES way imaginable - the production and instruments for one thing - horrible slap bass, awful 80s nu-romantic electronic drums, etc etc.... make me think of awful skinny white leather ties and bad Italian designer suits with shoulder pads (oh, sorry I forgot, Paul Young is wearing those on the sleeve of the album). And mullets - fucking loads of them! Don't forget the mullets and those preposterous lemon-sucking facial expressions so beloved of the Durans and Pete Murphys of this 80s netherworld...

How did Paul Young become so enormously successful around this time? Wasn't that whole album just awful 80s-style cover versions anyway?? Love Of The Common people was desecrated in exactly the same way wasn't it?

It does indeed feature on Paul Young's debut solo album No Parlez, an album that features several covers. Apparently Young regards LWTUA as one of the greatest soul songs ever written! The idea of doing it was floated to him by his then produced Laurie Latham and Young was blown away by Curtis's voice and the pure emotion expressed.

Yes, the instrumentation is truly naff and some of the production values (those spoken female vocals? Uck!) well beyond the pale. What was he thinking of? Apparently the Order regarded it with hilarity but thought it total shit and one can see why.

Ps Ho ho! Atmosphere by Russ Abbot is a different song as in "I love a party with a happy atmosphere"! The eighties were a strang time... :)

Ok I was 15 when Paul Young's version came out and I remember seeing the video on TV. It was the first time I ever heard this song so I thought it was ok but kind of boring and drony. At that time I didnt know who Joy Division was, it was 1983. I only heard about Joy Division in 1985 when I got into New Order. So hearing Paul Young's version and thinking he wrote the song at the time, which is embarrassing to admit, I thought the song was pretty average. And boring. Then I heard Joy Division's version later and realized how much Paul Young's version sucked and lacked soul for such a passionate song and when I listen to it now its even worse - just horrible.

My best mate bought 'No Parlez' on tape (remember them?) I was so horrified to hear Paul Young's version, that I threw the tape out of her bedroom window in disgust.

Needless to say, she was no longer my best mate after that.

Of all modern "reinterpretations" of seminal [post] punk songs, Paul Young's version of LWTUA is actually only equalled for sheer sacrilegious awfulness by Fine Young Cannibals' equally retchworthy "soulful" version of the Buzzcocks classic "Ever Fallen In Love"? I almost shat myself when that one came on the radio the other day...I really believed I was never ever going to hear it again.

I quite agree as I've no idea how Diggle, Shelley et al even agreed to allow the FYCs to do the business (and they certainly did their business all over it). All I can think is that The Buzzcocks received a pack of cash for it and any idea of integrity went down the road.

Worst still is the news that the song is now going to be re-recorded by a hotch-potch of bands...and Elton John! I've heard this will be something to do with John Peel Day but God knows what Peelie would think.

That's almost as funny as when "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed (wasn't that about jacking up? Or was that theory only because it was used in Trainspotting?) was covered by all those MOR bores like Heather Small and Bono and whoever else they were.....

I was actually given No Parlez by a friend who'd seen the track listing on the back and said "Hey, isn't that that band..." and the rest is history. I got the LP for a present and being this was before the nifty advent of mp3's on the internet, I had to suffer through the entirety of the song while my smiling friend was in the room watching me listen to it.

When she left I screamed at my record player for actually playing that in hi-fi. I should have sacrificed the disc to the Gods of Genius Music, but it just got shelved and still sits in a dark corner of my album rack.

I consider it to be one of the most soulless recordings I've been so cursed to hear. It's not my fault I'd heard the superior version before Paul Young had spat out his.

I have a copy of Paula Young's No Parlez if anybody would like to purchase it from me. Also includes a song that goes 'Ku Ku Kurama...' or something. Great just for the Q-Tips inside sleeve with the ever so funny photo tag lines, 'Shiterton - Don't we always! Fookin genius.

One of the best covers I ever heard was Frente's "BLT" from the early-90s. Don't have a copy but from memory it was bloody good, and an acoustic version to boot. Saying that the early-90s was rather a hazy period for me...

Frentes version "everytime i think of you, i feel a shot right through with a bolt of poo" (or something!?). its quite good though. There are quite a few NO tribute albums around and some of the versions are very good. I especially like Every Second Counts by Electobe(??). Sounds like Hooky doing backing vocals.

i don't think it's a bad song just because it was a GREAT SONG before P.Young did this cover in 83! However I remember my mates when i brought them the record in our rehearsal place! I put the vinyl on the record player and said:" chut!listen! do u know what's this?" an everyone started laughing (laughing ain't a bad thing:) ... Hooky sai about P.Young (i think it was in 86, on French tv):"he can't do B.M too, that's fine for me"- i guess he was a liitle bit ironic well, no, just cool, really! he was cool And i LOOOOVVEEE PAULLLL YYYYOUNNNG cover (eh, heu, qu'est-ce qu'il devient celui-là ?)

Ha! That's funny. Similar situation meself. Was 15 back in '83 (only 18 now) and thought it was great. Then heard Blue Monday and heard about JD and thought what a total f**k that Young was.
