Before starting on one club I'll state my belief that football is rotten to the core with ludicrous wages being paid to 'professionals' and their hangers on. Unless the game takes a reality check it will ruin itself and become a TV sport. Although attendances are supposedly increasing, I'd love to see a chart showing average age of paying spectator over the years, it must be going up.
For me Chelsea are ruining the game, but only at a faster rate than any other clubs Buying all the 'best', ie high profile players doesn't guarante success but will eventually be as close as you can get.
What is also of concern is the way Chelsea have tried to hoover up all the best junior players at Leeds, who have relied on sales of Lennon, Walton, Robinson, Kewell etc to keep them afloat. If these players were lost at youth level as has now happened then Leeds would have gone under. If Chelsea buy up the best young talent this country has to offer they are also financially underminiig every club in the country.
Chelsea have the money to make any fines meaningless and as a result are doing pretty much as they like. Until the FA and UEFA are prepared to hit them with more serious sanctions they will continue to do the same.
Chelsea are much like the New York Yankees here in baseball. One team with more resources than anyone buying all the best players, using money to overcome all in pursuit of a championship. Some of the stuff you worry about has happened here in the US to an extent. A TV league? Well, TV has far too much say over things like the starting time of games over here. Soon, you'll have no more afternoon games, everything will be on fookin "Prime Time". Ticket prices? Yes, regular people have been largely priced out of the games as well. The good seats, especially in basketball, go to corporate suits who sit on their asses and occasionally clap politely. OK, a bit of exaggeration but you get the idea. So without being a Premiership expert, I know what you guys are worrying about.
One concept used here to combat this, with tremendous success, is the salary cap. American football & basketball have it. Each team can only spend X million dollars on player salary per year. I can't see that happening in the Premiership, though. Perhaps something like baseball would be better, where a cap is set, and teams that exceed it pay a penalty, which is in proportion to the amount they go over. Then that money goes to the other teams in some sort of distribution. Another thing American football does is split TV revenue more or less equally between all of the teams. Rather communist, but it's worked very well for the league. I think there's an even greater disparity between Premiership teams than between NFL teams, so maybe that ain't such a good idea either.
We don't have youth systems the way England does, so nothing comparable, but yes, huge fins would be in order. Perhaps better written rules, too. I mean, are Chelsea actually breaking any rules? If not, or if it's inclear, then the rules need to be rewritten first.
Oh well, my two cents' worth, which probably isn't even worth two cents.
