In my opinion, what sets New Order apart from other electro-synth bands (such as Depeche Mode or Erasure) is its use of Hooky's bass lines and Sumner's guitar riffs and melodies. It gives them an edge that no other band in the same genre has. Also, they managed to play a very important role in shaping today's dance music without ever being mainstream.
