BIG DAY OUT REVIEW BY KEITH BROWN
As usual the weather forecast was wrong, but this time in our favour, and we were greeted with lovely un-English sunny skies as we made our way into the Big Day Out in Sydney.
The pre-New Order wait was pretty draining. The venue was awful, and seemed to be almost totally inhabited by 12 year old, pissed, System of a Down fans.
Thankfully by 8:15 they had all disappeared to watch Alien Ant Farm doing Michael Jackson covers on another stage and we could get on with the proper music.
Having seen New Order on Wednesday we had a good idea of what to expect, and we weren't disappointed. Bernard announced that they were from "Manchester, home of Manchester United, not Liverpool" and launched into an excellent Crystal and it just got better from there.
Having only seen New Order once before this week, back in 1985, it is a complete shock for Barney to be so chatty. He spent the whole night making jokes and chatting to the audience. As on Wednesday he complained about the temperature (too hot), and the volume of the instruments, this time guitar, rather than Wednesday's drums.
The set list was pretty similar to Wednesday, but with the excellent edition of Love Vigilantes, which was excellent and reminded me that I must listen to Low Life more. Obvious by their abs cense were Ceremony and Isolation, but we still got a few Joy Division songs (Transmission, Atmosphere and Love Will Tear Us Apart) Atmosphere being dedicated to Jessica who died at last year's BDO.
By Bizarre Love Triangle the audience were really into it, and there was plenty of mad dancing going on, particularly in our vicinity. For me Temptation was the highlight, as on Wednesday, a near 10 minute version that you couldn't avoid dancing too.
Despite Bernard's protestations that Blue Monday was the "bane of his life" the crowd went mad and it was the perfect end to a brilliant set and definitely the highlight of the day. The Prodigy were sadly average, and Basement Jaxx cancelled due to very bad timing on the organisers part.
There surely is no better way to spend a Saturday night that dancing under the stars to New Order.
