From Badlieutenant.net: "It is with frustration and regret that Bad Lieutenant reluctantly announces the cancellation of the band’s four U.S. dates set to commence next week. The more stringent immigration laws and changing visa parameters resulted in an inability to process the necessary paperwork. “We were all so very excited about coming to the States to play our new music for our American fans,” said Bad Lieutenant’s Bernard Sumner, “and are extremely disappointed that on this occasion, we won’t have the opportunity to do so. We plan to reschedule the Chicago and New York shows along with some additional U.S. dates in Spring 2010. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.” The four Bad Lieutenant dates that have been cancelled are: November 18 – Park West (headline), Chicago, IL November 19 – supporting the Pixies in Chicago, IL November 21 – Webster Hall (headline), New York, NY November 23 – supporting the Pixies in New York, NY The concerts were in support of Never Cry Another Tear, Bad Lieutenant’s debut release which arrived in stories on Tuesday, November 10. The band features New Order/Joy Division’s Sumner, newcomer Jake Evans on vocals and guitars as well as guitarist Phil Cunningham and drummer Stephen Morris, musicians who helped make the legendary New Order a multi-Platinum-selling band and one of the most influential forces over the past three decades in the alt/rock/dance genres. Bad Lieutenant’s Spring 2010 dates will be announced soon."
Two years ago New Order bassist Peter Hook quit the group and made it clear he wanted the band name retired. “You are no more New Order than I am!” he wrote in an infamous MySpace screed. “You may have two-thirds, but don’t assume you have the rights to do anything ‘New Order-ey,’ because you don’t.” The remaining members (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and New Order touring guitarist Phil Cunningham) took his advice, and re-dubbed themselves Bad Lieutenant. Their debut album Never Cry Another Tear is out October 13th. “The last New Order project was hard work,” Sumner says. “This was a happier atmosphere.” Sumner got the idea for the group’s name at Johnny Marr’s house. “I walked in and he was watching the scene in the movie Bad Lieutenant where Harvey Kietel is shooting the radio,” Sumner says. “I said, ‘What the fuck is this film?’ It was so gross and over the top.”

FIRST came Joy Division, then New Order – and Macclesfield’s latest claim to musical fame is Bad Lieutenant. Following the demise of New Order, three of the group’s former members have teamed up for a new band – along with a member of Blur. Frontman Bernard Sumner, drummer Stephen Morris and guitarist Phil Cunningham have joined with Blur’s Alex James for Bad Lieutenant’s debut album, due out in October. Rainow resident and drummer Stephen, said: "I think it’s going to be a great record. I’m only on a few tracks, but it’s great to be playing with them again – any chance to make a racket these days." The record has been road-tested on his kids Tilly, 13, and Grace, 11. "They loved the version I played them, which is always a good sign," he added. Bad Lieutenant formed after the acrimonious break-up of New Order – created by members of Joy Division after the suicide of Macclesfield singer Ian Curtis in 1980. Bad Lieutenant is a 1992 crime-drama film directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Harvey Keitel. In response to rumours an American band of the same name already exists, Stephen joked: "I’m sure we can settle it over a game of darts."

The Crystal Method have recruited a star-studded cast of contributors on their new album 'Divided By Night'. New Order bassist Peter Hook, Matisyahu, former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle and Metric frontwoman Emily Haines are among the artists who have contributed to the Los Angeles electronic duo's latest effort, due out in the US on May 12. Matisyahu provides vocals on 'Drown In The Now', the album's first single, while Hook appears on 'Blunts & Robots' and 'Dirty Thirty'. Haines and drummer Samantha Maloney, formerly of Hole and Peaches, lend their talents to 'Come Back Clean'.
New Order bassist Peter Hook likens his recent split from bandmates Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris to the unravelling of a marriage. "You know in a marriage or in a relationship when a few years after you get together you look 'round and see a stranger?" said Hook, down the line from his home in Manchester leading up to Tuesday's release of War Child Presents: Heroes, featuring a Hot Chip cover of Joy Division's Transmission. "It was just a change of attitude, really. I mean over the years we (in New Order) developed different tastes and different attitudes. Being in a group is all about compromise and the more you compromise, each of you, the better that group works ... Basically it just got to the point where I thought I had compromised enough. What surprised me is that I didn't think Bernard was bothered about New Order. It was only after we split up that I found out he was." Since the split, Sumner and Morris have indicated that New Order, formed by the three musicians in 1980 out of the ashes of Joy Division after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis, would continue without Hook. But Hook is not convinced that could ever happen. "They wouldn't be allowed to go out as New Order 'cause I'd sue 'em," Hook said. "It'd be a Spandau Ballet moment -- that thing where Tony Hadley can go out playing the songs of Spandau Ballet. It's childish but that's what being in a group is all about, isn't it?" Hook, who was a founding member of Joy Division with Sumner in 1976, said he'd never considered touring without him.

Peter Hook is a big deal. As the co-founder of Manchester greats Joy Division and a driving force behind New Order, the man has been a bass-wielding god for over three decades. For a new compilation called "Heroes" being released by the War Child International Charity, Hooky gave British electro-pop fivesome Hot Chip his blessing for their cover of the legendary Joy Division track “Transmission.” In part one of our five-part series, Hook chats with FILTER about his involvement with War Child and his reaction to Hot Chip’s version of his favorite Joy Division song. He opens up about Ian Curtis, New Order and the digital revolution a little later. Stay tuned. War Child approached you to pick a band and a song for that band to cover. So why choose Hot Chip? Steven Morris is a really big fan of Hot Chip and he was telling me about them before I had even heard of them. With DJing, I was going out and hearing this really wacky music that I eventually found out was Hot Chip. For this comp, Steve suggested Hot Chip and I thought they were a perfect choice. I like the way they look at the music and I am inspired the influences they pull in. They sound very current, very fresh and they have a great irreverent attitude to this business that we’re in. How did you get involved with War Child? I was first approached by War Child three years ago for another sampler CD. It’s so important and breaks your heart as a parent to think that there are children that don’t have access to a great childhood. When this came about it was an interesting way to look at the compilation in general and it's really done well so far in England. The people that are involved in putting this together are music fans themselves. It’s nice to be included, now that we’re at home now and New Order is no more it’s nice that people still remember us. How did you feel when you heard the Hot Chip cover for the first time? Strange thing was it really made me smile. I thought it was quite irreverent. The way Joy Division did it was very angry and aggressive and Hot Chip made it very endearing and warm and it’s more personal that way. With a song like “Transmission,” it's the best song we wrote. It’s sort of hard for me to remove myself from the song, but their version really did make me smile.

Microsoft is readying a Joy Division edition of its Zune MP3 player to coincide with the June 10 release of an eponymous DVD about the band. The Joy Division Zune will feature an adaptation of the cover art from the band's 1979 debut, Unknown Pleasures, which artist Peter Saville created using a graph of one hundred pulses from pulsar CP 1919 (apparently the first radio pulsar ever discovered). So far, no images are available of the Joy Division Zune, so to remind you what the pattern looks like, here's a picture showing how it looks on the underside of a pair of New Balance running shoes. A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed via e-mail: "Zune is working with Peter Saville on a design for a limited edition device in conjunction with 'Joy Division The Documentary,' and will be announcing further details regarding that design in the near future." Note: This is not the real look, it's a mock-up the guys at Engadget.com did, sort of wishful thinking.
On 2nd June Warner Music Entertainment will release "New Order: Live in Glasgow", a live DVD of the band’s celebratory concert filmed at Carling Academy, Glasgow in October 2006. Filmed over two nights it features tracks and footage highlighting the band's extraordinary career, as well as including a number of Joy Division songs. In addition to this concert, there will be a bonus disc featuring never-seen-before footage from band’s personal archive and live performances from throughout the 1980s, showcasing the band’s early Glastonbury performance through to their self-assured big tour concerts of later years, climaxing in their stunning performance headlining Wireless 2006. Wherefore art thou, Billy Corgan? It's been some six weeks since you and your Smashing Pumpkins last graced our news pages, but here you are again, with plentiful items of interest for your devotees. First there is the matter of Freebass, the Peter Hook/Andy Rourke/Mani all-bass supergroup. Freebass, as you know, have been recording with a number of different vocalists, including ex-Stone Rose Ian Brown and the Charlatans' Tim Burgess. A BBC 6 Music report yesterday quotes Hook as saying, "We persuaded Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins ." Mr. Corgan will, presumably, assist in the vocal capacity, as will Haven frontman Gary Briggs, UK singer Rowetta, and celebrity dope-dealer Howard Marks ("doing a rap," according to Hook). Oh boy!
