~ Chapter 1 [Love will (or won't?) tear us apart...] ~
Alrighteh, this post is dedicated to one of the greatest songs ever written by Ian Curtis and Joy Division [though not as great as the ever-divine 'Transmission'], a song that many indie artists and bands love to cover [though it IS hard to cover]...
Love Will Tear Us Apart.
Arguably one of the greatest songs ever written, how on earth could anyone go wrong with such an amazing song as this?
When routine bites hard, and ambitions are low,
And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow,
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads--
Then love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again...
I remember the first time I actually heard the song. It was on the radio very early last year, and I was just enchanted by it. That began what I would call the usual song-hunt: who did the song, what's the song's name, and is it anywhere to be found? After I found out the who [Joy Division], the what [Love Will Tear Us Apart], and the where [in short, next to impossible unless you know where to look]. Luckily in downtown DeLand there is a music store where I know the owner, and he ordered up some Joy Division ['Permanent'], and I got to know the beautiful noise that is now one of my two favorite bands of all time. Months later I would buy 'Substance', and eventually this past December and January [in the order I bought them] 'Closer', 'Still', and 'Unknown Pleasures'. And to add to the extra jewel to the crown, February brought in 'The Complete BBC Recordings' [I call 'em 'Complete BBC Sessions']. Needless to say, all I gotta hunt down is Warsaw and [maybe] 'Heart and Soul', and I'm just about all set!
Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side.
Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry,
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives--
But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again...
I first saw the video when I was at Independent Bar [which, yes, is also a dance club. woot!], and the first thing I thought of when I saw Stephen Morris was, 'HOLD UP! who's this cutie!?' Well, did more homework and, needless to say, it was a bummer when I read about Ian's suicide. But it also stunned the balogna out of me because it was also when I learned that Joy Division and New Order were, in spite of name changes and band member switches and the progressing of their music, THE SAME FRECKIN' BAND!!!
Needless to say, I was thrilled beyond all words.
So, now it's a bit over a year since I first actually heard of Joy Division, and needless to say I am back to near-full devotion to New Order, with a strong rest of it solely to the band that was Joy Division. This is a band whose music saved me from killing myself [I was suicidal, seriously; you'd never guess that such a happy-go-lucky goth/punk girl would have a death wish] and, had Ian lived and I got to meet them I'd let them know just how important their music was--and still is--in my life to this day. [How many times can I sing 'Transmission' and not get tired of it, only to love it all the more?]
You cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed.
And there's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold.
Just that something so good just can't function no more--
But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again...

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
