Joy Division Mural That Was Scrubbed for Aitch Album Ad Finally Repainted in Manchester

An Ian Curtis mural in Manchester, painted over by an Amazon Music ad for Aitch's album in 2022, has been repainted at a new location near Piccadilly railway station. Originally created in 2020 for mental health awareness, the new piece was unveiled on World Suicide Prevention Day by original artist Akse, following Aitch's apology and discussions with Manchester City Council.

Artist Akse's mural of Ian Curtis, originally painted in 2020 as part of a mental health awareness initiative, has finally been restored to Manchester's landscape. After being controversially painted over in 2022 when an Amazon Music advertisement for Aitch's album was placed on top of it, the mural has reappeared on the side of the Star & Garter pub near Piccadilly railway station, unveiled on World Suicide Prevention Day.

The incident sparked significant backlash, but Aitch quickly apologised and committed to restoring the mural. Bernard Sumner acknowledged the mistake graciously, saying someone had simply misjudged the situation, whilst Peter Hook thanked Aitch for his swift response. The restoration required planning permission from Manchester City Council, with Akse eventually receiving approval for the new location.

The mural's reappearance underscores its status as a cultural landmark for Manchester and beyond. Based on a photograph by Philippe Carly, it represents both a tribute to Curtis and a commitment to mental health awareness—a cause particularly relevant given Curtis's death in 1980. Akse's statement about the mural reflects how deeply the community values its preservation.
