I love album covers, i truly think it is a legitimate art form. Please feel free to post pictures of your favourtite album covers and why you like them. I will start with the bleeding obvious.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

I love the starkness of this work.

When it comes to Joy division i actually prefer closer.

No particular favourite but heres a few.

Manics- Holy Bible Smiths- The World Wont Listen New Order- Republic REM- Murmur

And even though i have never seen it, and am not too sure it exists, but didnt the durruti column have one made of sandpaper?

not at home just now to go through them all, but off the top of my head, I love the sunburst on this one:

Excepting anything done by Saville, then just about all the Cocteau Twins covers are fabulous, relaxing, mysterious, uplifting.....

This is my favourite:

Yep, it was their first album (and a brilliant album it was) from 1980 and was called "The Return Of The Durruti Column". I've spent the last half hour looking for a picture of it but to no avail. It's a great album cover and in true Factory style it just has the words "FACT 14" on the front.

If I ever end up in South Carolina, which I highly doubt, I want to head over to your place and see what articles of Yanni merchandise do you have in your collection. Not only do you talk about him too much, you cannot even realize that his best album cover was Niki Nana

What is with the Yanni obsession guys?

-Smashing Pumpkins: Gish -The Cure: Disintegration (unfortunately, my friend Bill, who has pretty much disintegrated himself, still has the cover). -Pet Shop Boys: Nightlife -Smashing Pumpkins: "Zero" single -New Order: Low-Life -New Order: Get Ready.

I think that's enough.

Personally I've never found any of the New Order album covers (except for maybe Movement and PCL) all that good. The Joy Division ones are quite good, but does Saville really deserve so much credit for those? I could've made them. The UP cover he didn't even find, and all he did was reverse the colors from black to white. Whoopty fricking doo. The Closer cover he didn't even photograph. Talk about being overrated. And he can't even do such easy tasks on time!

I also really, really like Unknown Pleasures a lot, so I'll add a couple of things that turned my head back when I first saw 'em. Tabsy mentioned Talking Heads: 77, but it was their follow-up, More Songs About Buildings And Food, that really caught my eye......

....just 529 polariod photos lined up, and I also love the follow-up to this album, the textures of Fear Of Music...

Not widely known, but still great, I've gotta add Y by Bristol's The Pop Group. We are all prostitutes indeed.....

Bernard came up with the idea for this album, the scream of an exploding star, and your right David, Peter is a slack bastard.

Nah, I just looked at the inner sleeve for the info, plus a quick count shows 23 pics across, plus 23 down.

Peter Gabriel's first four solo albums all had great album covers,

and then with his fifth album "SO" he got Peter Saville to design it, the most boring album cover ever.

No problem Martin, on the topic about webmasters changing the names of images, or replacing them altogether, there was an incident on another board that I read this past week.

A couple of years ago, some of the posters were using small Simpsons gifs as an avatar; the webhosting company changed hands, and in their effort to stop remote linking, they apparently replaced those animated gifs with swastikas; it was a shock to see what was a blinking Moe replaced with that. The webmaster, however, was nice enough to make everyone aware of the changes right away.

Those of us lucky enough to attend the NOOL meet in Seattle were able to see a framed print taken from the original negative for the photo on the cover of the Pixies album "Surfer Rosa."

I have to agree, I love this one; it's hanging framed in my entrance hall. I have the promo poster for New Order's substance hanging framed in my living room.
