Is it worth Buying dave gahans solo album? I am going to see him at the apollo in october and thought i should familairise myself with his solo work.

Also, what depeche mode cd should i buy next? I have all the singles, and violator. Any suggestions?

And, finally, have they or have they not split up?

Difficult to recommend which cd to buy next but try Black Celebration, Songs Of Faith & Devotion or Ultra. (Ah shite, try any that you don't have! ) Ultra may take a bit of time to get into, but it's an excellent album. The most recent one, Exciter, got a bit of a slating, but it's not that bad. Not up to Violator standard, but pretty good.

Apparently, Martin Gore is due to start writing material for a new album in the very near future, though there's rumours that Dave Gahan wants more of a role in that side of things this time. Andy Fletcher will spend a lot of the time clapping his hands!:evil4:

Some Great Reward is one of my favorites (except for Somebody). Best to avoid the first album(s). They only started getting decent on Construction Time Again, but it's still a pretty weak album. Black Celebration is quite good, as is Music for the Masses, but both albums have definite must-skip songs. Violator is the zenith of DM, Faith and Devotion is quite good also, and Ultra is more of a mood piece in a lot of ways. Exciter was just weak. They're finished after one more album. Guaranteed.

Ditto...wow, "Two Minute Warning", "The Landscape is Changing" "Everything Counts", "And Then...", good stuff. My fave DM album.

I agree with Dave....DM was great with Violator and Some Great Reward....but i think they are on a downward curve....I say one more CD plus a greatest hits CD soon after...then maybe they will pull an Eagles, and in 10 years or so have a comeback tour (how sad would that be!!!)

Paper Monsters is worth the buy - Hidden Houses, Stay and Dirty Sticky Floors are all excellent tracks, with only one or two really weak tracks. However, if you like DM more for the electronic side you may be disappointed. I don't like Dave's rockier interpretations of DM songs on his tour - his band just sounds like a bunch of session musos. As for DM albums, Black Celebration should be your next buy, followed by Music for the Masses - both contain absolute classics and provide a good mixture of DM sounds. Delve into the other albums later if you like the 2 above. I thought Exciter sucked and am hoping against hope that their next (probably their last) will provide one last burst of great songs.

Ultra was a great album, stay away from exciter, actually it was very boring. hoever the singles to dream on was cool for the remixes and the bside...dirt. older albums, i suggest balck celebration.

In my opinion, Depeche Mode have not matured and stayed relevant to me like New Order has. I don't find myself often going back to Depeche Mode like I can with New Order. Anyway, my favorite DM albums are Violator and Music for the Masses. I also enjoyed Martin Gore's first solo album, Counterfeit but I haven't revisited it in years. How is Couterfeit 2?

head to head counterfeit2 destroys paper monsters. the songs on paper monsters are week, serving only as a medium for dave to sing over. the album is kinda boring all in all.

as for DM albums: broken frame kicks the shit outta every other DM attempt ever, and you all know it! so stop talking shit and wake up!

no but in all seriousness, some great reward and black celebration are classic DM at its best. Vio & SOFAD are great contemporary albums and it's been all downhill since. ultra isn't to shabby, but the hill got really steep just before exciter. what a load of crap. Bell & DM shouldn't be working together. it should be the good ol' Flood behind the controls, or Alan Moulder if you wanna try something new. but not fuckin' Bell... he's too minimal for DM.

-s-

ps: someone should find a way to get wilder involved. maybe he could produce the next album and save the whole thing.

why don't you just make dave leave, so he can focus on his "writing," and get Clarke back to sing as well. Then it'll be just like the old C.O.S. days.

Check out Music for the Masses, then Black Celebration. If you like those then try Ultra and the older albums.

you're not the only one! Speak & Spell and A broken frame are my favorite albums from DM. I love it to hear puppets, ice machine, nodisco or may the sun & the rainfall!

Buy in the following order:

Black Celebration Speak & Spell (Photographic, Big Muff, Any Second Now...all great. Skip What's Your Name) Ultra Music For the Masses Some Great Reward Construction Time Again A Broken Frame Exciter SOFAD

Paper Monsters is a decent album, but I'd buy it used. While I want to give Dave leeway in his song-writing since this is his first effort, he really should have honed his skills a bit before releasing an album...

The best Depeche Mode albums are: Violator, Construction Time Again, Music For The Masses, SOFAD, Black Celebration, Some Great Reward, Ultra, Speak and Spell, Exciter, and A Broken Frame

Ahh Depeche. My favourite band in the world.

Two more albums by them I reckon, in my opinion. Fletch has said that he feels that two more is enough, but then again anything he says it hardly believable.

As for the DM - NO argument...well....DM win everytime for me, but I still love NO.
