Well, apparently this is true!

For the past four years, a star NFL player has replaced John Madden on the cover of the Madden NFL video game series; each year that player has suffered an injury or some other disappointing news:

Madden 2001 cover: Eddie George, Titans RB

Before cover: The Titans reached the Super Bowl the prior season and George had gone to three consecutive Pro Bowls.

After cover: Averaged 3.2 yards per carry in 2001 and 2002 and the Titans haven't been back to the Super Bowl.

Madden 2002 cover: Daunte Culpepper, Vikings QB Before cover: Culpepper threw 33 TD passes and led team to the NFC championship game.

After cover: Culpepper missed five games in 2001 with a knee injury, threw a league-high 23 interceptions in 2002; the Vikings have gone 11-21 since 2000.

Madden 2003 cover: Marshall Faulk, Rams RB Before cover: Faulk had become the first player in NFL history to gain 2,000 yards from scrimmage in four consecutive seasons; the Rams had been to three straight postseasons.

After cover: Plagued by an ankle injury, Faulk started a career-low 10 games as the Rams missed the playoffs.

Madden 2003 cover: Micheal Vick, Falcons QB Before Cover: In one season, Vick grew from a talented-yet-inexperienced prospect into the league's most exciting player and one of its biggest stars. He had new goals this season: to gain confidence as a passer, increase his accuracy, and take the Falcons even deeper into the playoffs.

After cover: Broken fibula, out at least 4 weeks.

NHL 99 cover: Eric Lindros, PHI Before Cover: He had been dissapointing after MVP year in 1995, but in 1999 he was ready to regain his form.

After Cover: He got 93 pts in 71 games but then the curse finally struck him and he went down with a collapsed long. He has not been the same since.

NHL 2001 cover: Owen Nolan, SJ Before Cover: 84 pts in 78 games. After cover: 49 pts in 57 games.

NHL 2002 cover: Mario Lemieux, Pit Before Cover: With the return of one of the greatest players ever to play in the league, the pens were poised to at least make the playoffs again.

After Cover: Due to injuries, Mario only played in 24 games and the pens missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

NHL 2003 cover: Jerome Iginla, Cal Before Cover: MVP finalist with 96 pts After Cover: only scored 67 pts.

NHL 2004 cover: Danny Heatly, Atl Before Cover: NHL rookie of the year in the previous year, MVP of the allstar game, scored 89 pts in 78 games.

After Cover: Suffered a broken jaw in a car accident. Out indefinately.

MVP Baseball 2003 cover: Randy Jonson, Ari Before Cover: Cy Young Award Winner as National League's best pitcher.

After Cover: After few games in the Minors he had 18 starts and went 6 and 8. Era went from and amazing 2.32 to 4.26. Strike out went from 334 to 125.

MVP Baseball 2003 cover: Miguel Tejada, Oak Before Cover: MVP of the American League.

After cover: Batting average dropped from .308 to .278; Rbi's dropped from 131 to 106;hr's dropped from 34 to 27;hits dropped from 204 to 177; and runs dropped from 108 to 98

now i remember on FIFA 2000 cover was spanish Josep Guardiola (spanish version). and he got injured too after that!!

Damn Barry Bonds, well f*** as long as he remains a Giant.

Well fook you ! What's Beckham done to deserve that, or are you a mad rabid Turk really ? Well it's just that Beckham is the subject of a really damn annoying movie, he has a gorgeous girlfriend, and he used to play w/ Man U.; that gives me every right to dislike him :D

EA Sports calling...anyone up for "John Madden Football: Barry Bonds Baseball Edition"? :evil4:

Bonds is one of those guys you have to respect for his ability to knock out monster home runs, but you can't really like. He's just way too stand-offish and very unfriendly (at least to the media, who truth be told have probably manufactured much of his reputation for rudeness). He's probably the greatest hitter of our time, but he's an asshole :nonono:

Speaking of the possibility of a BoSox/Cubbies World Series...I'll be hiding in my makeshift bunker, awaiting the Apocalypse :D

Well looking at how the Yanks played, and the way the Sox match up with the A's and Twins, it's highly likely that they will end up in the postseason; will they win, I hope so, but the Bosox have a knack of choking at the World Series, i.e. their series w/ the Mets in the eighties

Can't disagree with the fact that SF did indeed choke away the title last year, nor the fact that BB is indeed a prick of the highest order. No, I still remain a Giants fan from the days when Willie Mays played; old habits die hard.

Speaking, unfortunately, of dying,I think my brother, who lives in Santa Barbara, said he went to the late season SF/LA game at Chavez Ravine where the fan was shot.

Personally, I hope for either San Francisco or Minnesota to win it all this year, for sentimental reasons.

The first one being that Felipe Alou and Andres Galarraga both used to be in Expos uniforms and never had the occasion to win it all here in my home city. Both were class acts, and it may be their last occasion to do it.

The second one is simply that the Twins, being a small market team, threatened with contraction last year just like my Expos, are somewhat a natural team to cheer for.

How bout Pedro Martinez, he was an Expo, a damn good one too, and he needs a world series; so i'm cheering for the bosox, even if things look grim for them

I can't help but think the Bosox are done after two wins by the A's (Boston probably has the worst relief staff of the teams now in the postseason) but the Twins and Yanks are even at a game a piece and so are Atlanta and Chicago. (Now that I think about it, I think the Giants and Marlins are also a game a piece). At any rate, it's looking to be a great post season.

What does everyone say to a Cubs-Twins series? :shrug: or a Giants-Yankees series (wouldn't mean the same as when the Giants and Dodgers also called New York home) :nod: or a Marlins - A's showdown or the Bosox choking yet again :p

my dream WAS a bosox braves matchup w/ the bosox winning in 4 games straight, but damn the bosox allowing the a's to win game win, and damn their pusillanimous hitting lineup; only one run! F*** that shit

Giants piss it away again, not to my surprise, so I'll go with anybody but the Red Sox and their fans and the Marlins as well (can't forget the fire sale they had after they won their first title).

I'm disillusioned with baseball now because of how the bosox have wasted their opportuniy and how the dodgers wasted their awesome pitching during the whole season. So I'm watching football, luckily the 'boys are winning :)
