Well, apparently this is true!
For the past four years, a star NFL player has replaced John Madden on the cover of the Madden NFL video game series; each year that player has suffered an injury or some other disappointing news:
Madden 2001 cover: Eddie George, Titans RB
Before cover: The Titans reached the Super Bowl the prior season and George had gone to three consecutive Pro Bowls.
After cover: Averaged 3.2 yards per carry in 2001 and 2002 and the Titans haven't been back to the Super Bowl.
Madden 2002 cover: Daunte Culpepper, Vikings QB Before cover: Culpepper threw 33 TD passes and led team to the NFC championship game.
After cover: Culpepper missed five games in 2001 with a knee injury, threw a league-high 23 interceptions in 2002; the Vikings have gone 11-21 since 2000.
Madden 2003 cover: Marshall Faulk, Rams RB Before cover: Faulk had become the first player in NFL history to gain 2,000 yards from scrimmage in four consecutive seasons; the Rams had been to three straight postseasons.
After cover: Plagued by an ankle injury, Faulk started a career-low 10 games as the Rams missed the playoffs.
Madden 2003 cover: Micheal Vick, Falcons QB Before Cover: In one season, Vick grew from a talented-yet-inexperienced prospect into the league's most exciting player and one of its biggest stars. He had new goals this season: to gain confidence as a passer, increase his accuracy, and take the Falcons even deeper into the playoffs.
After cover: Broken fibula, out at least 4 weeks.
NHL 99 cover: Eric Lindros, PHI Before Cover: He had been dissapointing after MVP year in 1995, but in 1999 he was ready to regain his form.
After Cover: He got 93 pts in 71 games but then the curse finally struck him and he went down with a collapsed long. He has not been the same since.
NHL 2001 cover: Owen Nolan, SJ Before Cover: 84 pts in 78 games. After cover: 49 pts in 57 games.
NHL 2002 cover: Mario Lemieux, Pit Before Cover: With the return of one of the greatest players ever to play in the league, the pens were poised to at least make the playoffs again.
After Cover: Due to injuries, Mario only played in 24 games and the pens missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990.
NHL 2003 cover: Jerome Iginla, Cal Before Cover: MVP finalist with 96 pts After Cover: only scored 67 pts.
NHL 2004 cover: Danny Heatly, Atl Before Cover: NHL rookie of the year in the previous year, MVP of the allstar game, scored 89 pts in 78 games.
After Cover: Suffered a broken jaw in a car accident. Out indefinately.
MVP Baseball 2003 cover: Randy Jonson, Ari Before Cover: Cy Young Award Winner as National League's best pitcher.
After Cover: After few games in the Minors he had 18 starts and went 6 and 8. Era went from and amazing 2.32 to 4.26. Strike out went from 334 to 125.
MVP Baseball 2003 cover: Miguel Tejada, Oak Before Cover: MVP of the American League.
After cover: Batting average dropped from .308 to .278; Rbi's dropped from 131 to 106;hr's dropped from 34 to 27;hits dropped from 204 to 177; and runs dropped from 108 to 98
