Big grin on my face thinking that this is THE SONG to be played during my funeral. Got the sunroof open and the windows down enjoying a beautiful autumn day in the Jag. Then I see a dog die. At first I thought it was tied to the bumper of the car I was following as the dog seemed to be dragged as it was convulsing in a death rattle. Black Lab just like mine would of looked like if a Rottie did not jump its mother.

I laided on the horn to get the car to stop then I stopped in the middle of the road to block traffic, a two lane one way on a slow street.

The man driving the car that hit the dog was about 74 years old. "I did not see it until it was underneath my car." Same here. He must have felt terrible. There were a few onlookers but know one knew who the dog belonged too. We decided to knock on doors to find the owner.

Then she saw him. A young girl, maybe 8 or 9 years old and her aunt. The flood of tears. Up til then I ok, just had to do the right thing. But when i saw her I knew exactly how she felt.

The dog was now dead, no bloody mess, no more pain. Thus safe to move off the road. I did this. Felt just like my old Lab, RIP.

Five hours later I still feel like shit.

I always wince whenever I see a dead dog or cat in the middle of the road somewhere (which is more often than I'd like here in the car-crazy South). You wonder if someone's out looking for it, if they'll ever really know what happened or will have to keep wondering. I guess in some instances it's best not to know (especially with a small kid involved) but I do wish people would be a little less in a hurry to "brake for animals". Maybe it's the fact that I lost a cousin to someone in too much of a hurry, but I'm sensitive to that.

Sounds like the guy who hit it is yet another elderly driver that probably shouldn't be on the highway. Of course, there's a lot of people with cell phones who shouldn't be behind the wheel, but that's another arguement entirely. The poor guy obviously didn't have a clue, and I bet he still feels just as awful as when he found it out. He obviously wasn't being intentionally cruel to the poor creature.

Jeez, this hits home, I have a pretty good idea of what all this is for you. It'll fade in time, but right now that shitty feeling is all you can probably think about. My sympathies, and you couldn't have done more than you did do.

Feeling better already. Just did 2.5 hours of online WWII a/c killing. Only shot down once for 8 kills, one bomb on a carrier and killing 15 soldiers.

I do not think that the old man was at fault, the dog should not have run into the street.:( The owners should have had him insided, fenced, leashed or tied up. I have seen my old lab get hit or run into a car 3 times. My Pyrenese has been hit once. Fortunately they were only shocked not hurt.
