I think HW was asking if the referee was called Mike Riley. I can't remember if it was, but he was going by the letter of the law, i.e. if the player fouled is the "last man" (no-one between him & goal except the keeper), then the player committing the foul must be sent off as he denied the player a clear goalscoring opportunity. Also known as a "professional foul". I think the referee was a bit harsh in this case, as awarding a penalty against the keeper was surely enough. Although, perhaps keeping van Nistelrooy's penalty record this season up to then (1/4!) in mind, maybe the ref didn't think a penalty would necessarily mean punishment.
