Can anyone explain why so many New Order fans also like Depeche Mode, I always thought they were a bunch of hopeless Wooftah's.

As a rule they don't. Nor the Cure.
It's the American contingent in the main here who go 'over to the other side'. New Order ain't viewed as a lads band anywhere outside the UK, Mike. Sadly, they're often viewed themselves in foreign climes as [ahem] 'Wooftahs'.

Also if anyone is still wary of Depeche Mode..you can see what all the fuss is about if you pick up there concert film "101" dvd which was just released.
U2 also have a new concert dvd.."Live at Slane Castle".
....I think Al was right, most of us outside UK see NewOrder as a semi-'intellectual' band - nothing like the soccer hooligans sort-of band ( oops, sorry... )

...oh, I was a big MODE fan, saw them a few times over here in Oz...and owns every single CD and DVD releases...but frankly I have lost interests in the MODE after VIOLATOR.....and after DAVE gone all 'RAGE-AFTER-THE-MACHINE'.....
I'm still a fan of FAT BOB's BAND....and my interest in them boosted considerably after the BLOODFLOWERS/DREAM TOUR of OZ...bloody great 2-hours plus of gothic drone (and saw them 2 days in a row...)
...but no matter what - JD & NO are still up there UNTOUCHABLE ...........
I became a New Order fan before Depeche Mode, but I was a bigger fan of Depeche Mode during the late 80's - early 90's. Mostly because Depeche Mode had more "hits." Is that the right word? Or should I have said singles? 
Anyway, after Alan Wilder left, they went downhill and my love of New Order has prevailed. NO are still going strong. I find myself listening to old New Order records more than DM records. When I listen to "Blasphemous Rumours" today, I'm like, 'What in the hell was wrong with me?' 
I used to love Depeche Mode, even more than New Order, but during the past year, I have found it impossible to listen to more than two of their songs consecutively, but I still like the bastards
used to like depeche mode but grew out of it, most of their music just sounds way too cliche or dated for me now, sold all my DM Cd's a while ago. Their music has definately not age as well as NO and JD... 
DM is pretty good, is still one of my faves but not as high up there as the Order. But the Cure is at The Top. Though Joy Division gives 'em a tough competition. Just admit that all 3 bands have made bad albums and looked damn near goofy at times.
DM had some good songs. i hate their early stuff, it´s SOOO dated! but i really like from Black Celebraion through SOFADevotion. but since then they became darker and minimalistic-er, and i can´t listen to their last 3 albums to be honest.

Semi-intellectuals follow New Order outside of the UK ... And intellectuals proper follow them inside the UK, yes?!!!

Anyway, I like Depeche Mode alright, but not a *huge* fan. All I've got is Violater (why does a Prince Charles joke suddenly enter my head?) and the Singles 81-85.
lost interest after Enjoy the Silence, Violator right? Bought all the singles from that album. have not listened to them since. They do have a few outstanding songs that Almanso listed but he left out Everything Counts (IMHO their best) and their cover of Route 66.
But truthfully, they sound like a bunch of gloomy whining fags.
Fat Bob and the Curse aged better.
NO will always be my fave. More diverse, more listenable. Less chance of getting my head bashed in for listening to it.

Well, I was going to ask what a "wooftah" is, but I get the idea now.
Can't quite get a handle on why my favorite bands-- Moz/Smiths, The Cure, DM, Pet Shop Boys, NO-- are all either "wooftahs," or have wooftah fans. And it's not that I'm leaning that way myself-- but I definitely prefer the music, and I'm definitely attracted to women that follow these bands. Maybe I'm one of those semi-intellectuals?
Anyway, NO is most definitely NOT a "lads band" over here...well, maybe a "fudge-packing lads" band, but not a "lads band." Discuss.

Yes, New Order is hardly seen as a lad's or semi-intellectual or any other sort of band over here in the States. Generally speaking, they're only seen as just another British new wave band from the 80's and so get lumped in with The Cure, DM, et al. No one seriously listens to them anymore, partially because of their age and the appearance of Get Ready and other such things to be one of those pathetic reunion things bands do when money runs out. They belong to another time and no longer have any relevance, say people around these parts. That's why we're stuck with shite like Interpol and all those bands that claim to crib from JD/NO. Never really heard NO being called a bunch of poofs, but I could see sloppy comparisons being made to poof bands like Pet Shop, Erasure, Human League, etc. I honestly have no idea why NO would be seen as semi-intellectual anywhere, anyway.
New Order got lumped in (here in the States) with those bands when they were at the peak of their popularity. I think intellectuals, or at least those who considered themselves to be intellectuals, i.e., suburban misfits, latched onto these bands. A "lads band" here might have been something like Van Halen.

I like DM, but when I listen to them I just think it sounds "fake". DM was a pop band in the 80's, with silly lyrics. But it seems to me it was their purpose to be like that. Some time ago a friend of mine said he didn't like NO because they sounded "fake", like if they did what they did in the 80's just for the money. I think DM is a little like this, too.
Of course, they don't have the deepness on creating lyrics like Ian, or even Barney, but I'm pretty sure they got some influence from Joy Division.
So, I like DM because they weren't and are not a serious band, and this even for themselves.

Yes,they used to wear leather pants like Warsaw did 
listened to dm loads when i was young (ages 9-14) got distracted by punk rawk in highschool, and now listen to dm for the nostalgia. don't like exciter, but everything else is fine.
it seems that NO/JD get lumped with DM, Cure, PSB, Moz/Smiths etc... because they, as a collective, served as an alternative to the hair bands of the mid-to-late 80z here in the states. (yes, that is a "z" after the "80," just to show you how totally radical i truly am. now tell me where you hid my hot pink spandex, and i won't send you anthrax in the mail)
