So I rented "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" the other night. I love when a movie, purportedly in the English language, needs subtitles. Saw an interview with Liam Gallagher once that was full of subtitles. But I digress.

Really, much of the movie needed subtitles, but since there was little use of subtitles, I had to watch it twice, with liberal use of the rewind button, to understand what was going on. But I digress.

There's a scene in the film where Big Chris and Little Chris walk into Harry's office. Harry asks Big Chris if he'd like a drink, and "The Baptist" asks little Chris if he'd like a Lolly. Little Chris turns to him and says "piss off, noonce [spelling?]" So can any of our English friends enlighten me as to what Little Chris was calling him?

By the way, Vinnie Jones who played in Lock,Stock and two smoking barrels was a second rate soccer player in England.

He is known as a thug, and was recently arreseted for causing a disturbance on a flight.

The guy is just a bully.

So he's really just playing himself in these movies then :)

Yep, minimal acting skills required, though he has become rather rich as a result of his only talent being the ability to get an agent with vision !

I actually watched this film for the first time in a cinema in Liverpool - you should have seen the reactions up there to the stereotypical burglars and the "Northern Monkeys" line :evil4:

English mate of mine has just moved to Noo Yoik after living in Boston for six years. When 'Snatch' came out one of his (Boston) colleagues saw said movie and commented to my mate, "Hey, your English black guys speak just like your white guys speak!"

Doh!

Even though there probably was a phrase or two in Snatch or LS&TSB that I didn't immediately understand, I still don't watch those movies with subtitles. like some lazy people I know. I see that the US version of Snatch has a Pikey subtitle choice available, which could be worth a view, seeing as how Turkish didn't really understand what Mickey was saying either

Yeah, that was my experience-- not immediately understanding at least some of the phrases. Liberal use of replay got me through it OK, though. Amazing how we're supposedly all speaking the same language, and yet I find some of what they're saying a complete mystery. The version of LS&TSB I saw only had subtitles where the story about Rory Breaker burning the guy in the bar was told-- must've been in Cockney.

Britishism my ass. I was on a bicycle tour trying to have a conversation with a woman from New Zealand and had no fucking clue what she said. She claimed to be speaking English but it was like a hidden dose of lsd hit me. I could only smile before I decided to get the fuck away.

Is Ebonics a US only thing??

Ebonics, even in the US, is a regional thing. Living in both Philly and Boston, I can say that the Ebonics of both cities seem to vary, aside from accent.

No. Not at all. Basically, it's messed-up English, with different forms, or complete omittance, of the verb "to be" in most cases.
