Exactly, and as a lot of news reports have come out this week, we're not really sure that Pete can be believed when he said he didn't bet against the Reds. The thing is, I don't care about his betting on other sports, but as he bet on baseball (and, as a manager, was in a position to affect the outcome of games) he broke the rules and brought the game to its lowest point since the Black Sox scandel. I won't argue that his accomplishments merit inclusion (they do), but the fact of the matter is Pete broke the rules and doesn't really seem truly sorry. Maybe when he passes away, there could be an induction because then he wouldn't be around to make any money off it.

Baseball has some real low-lifes in the Hall, to be sure, but I think line had to be drawn at betting because it can affect the way a player, team, or manager approaches a game. Ty Cobb's racism didn't cause him to throw a game, or Babe Ruth's smoking and alcoholism. And Pete's assertation that had he been a cokehead like Steve Howe or Darryl Strawberry, he would've gotten back in baseball's good graces, is patently false due to the fact that he never has sought treatment for his addiction.

The difference is that steroids are used to improve performance. Betting could hurt the team. If Pete was deeply indebt to the mob or whatever, he could intentioanlly cause his team to lose to satisfy the debt collector.

I agree; however, steroids are cheating. What's the difference between steroids and a corked bat?
