Don't knock Floyd...

Floyd does a good job. I've got what I never knew I wanted, and put up what I thought might be of interest to people - and in the case of Hybrid suggested that people buy the album.

Yeah, maybe it's too much for one person to bear. I mentioned this the first time F's server went down. It's difficulut to believe nobody else here's got the knowledge to do what he's done. If I were him, I might just take UPs insults as a legitimate reason to fuck off. And fair enough. But this should be a Library that's there for all; without petty infighting. Stand up and be cunted :)

Why are you bringing this up again ? I have explained my reasons for not being in favour of Floyd's server on another thread, and gone as far as apologising if people don't agree with my reasons. Let it lie.

The other thread got cut off, I think? Anyway, this isn't about you, it's about having a safe haven for our stuff.

Hypothetical scenario:

You log on to Floyd's server tomorrow but can't get on. You then log on to NOOL to see what's going on, but find that it's been closed down. Because New Order or their management decide to no longer turn a blind eye. How supportive will everyone be then?

OK, so it probably won't happen, but it could.

The way I see it there are several issues. First the buyers versus the freeloaders. Understandably there is resistance when it becomes possible to get an "instant collection". It's as if New Order don't deserve to get paid for what they do.

Secondly the technical capabilities of the actual server. The deal does definately seem to be heavily weighted in Floyd's favour. Maybe a scheme where people could ask Floyd to copy their required files onto CD for them might work.

And lastly and most importantly, I'm sure no-one is against the supposed "rare" stuff being available, or encodings of stuff that isn't on CD. And I'm the first to say that Floyd does offer a useful resource here, but is it really necessary to have all the commercially available stuff? The CD singles for instance. That'll be the what causes concern. If someone wants to listen to Player In The League then just go and fucking buy it, it's not that hard to get hold of!

Just my opinion.

...when I started this service in July 2003, I never expected how successful this would be... ...freeloaders vs. buyers I can't understand, because I'm both (and being sure, many others too)... ...no one MUST take this service, take it or leave it... ...what's the difference to get some things via Ukrainian or Russian website, or from me, any explanations ?... ...and when I surf through the www, I can find another dimensions of bringing free music, than my little service... ...ofcourse it's illegal, ofcourse, but who cares, but purists... ...at last I'm sure I don't damage the image of New Order, neither the artistic nor the financial...

Hometaping is killing music, well accordin to Bob Harris on the Old Grey Whistle Test , years ago... He wore a 'Back to Mono' badge ( button ) at the time as well. So maybe not the best fella to listen to

Well, say that they release a new album, someone gets hold of a pre-release version, rips it, uploads, and brags about it... I don't think the label would let that pass. Heck, I hope they don't let that pass.

Sorry, but you can't honestly believe that. Hosting that many commercially and readily available tracks COMPLETELY damages New Order financially. I'm amazed that you can even make that statement.

Don't get me wrong Floyd, I'm not against you. I'm as happy to share as the next man. I just think a little more consideration of the consequences would be prudent. By everyone. Not just you.

The last Fall album was delayed by about 6 months and completely remastered because of this. The version called "Country on the Click" was ready to come out and must have got DLed onto a file sharer.

We had to wait another 6 months for the redone version, hence the acerbic revised title ("The Real New Fall Album Formerly Country On the Click"). Their current record label Action Records hardly have the clout of a major, but they also don't have the money and can not really afford to let this kind of thing go.

That said, I am pleased to have found a few real rarities on sites such as Winmx which don't look like ever coming out on CD, and never were on CD originally. Example: "All You Need Is Love" by the Bunnymen. the origainl B-side version had dialogue on it from a TV series. The cut on "Crystal Days" omitted this for some reason (copyright?), so I was very happy to find an mp3 of it. Similarly I have no problem with live stuff being shared as most of it is unlikely to come out (obviously, Throbbing Gristle excepted!).

I'm not being flippant here but, Tony Wilson once said of either NO or the Mondays ,that they would be Factory's Pink Floyd , it was in a printed article , dont know which paper/mag. I reckon he was referin to NO , the mondays were a bit more Barclay James Harvest :D

Interesting. I always thought Radiohead in their very beginnin could turn into a new JD/NO style band. They had future. Then they turned weird, I thought "this is Pink Floyd!", and found out they actually are a big fan of PF.

I own the Brixton Academy live video and it was great to be able to download the same concert in mp3 to listen on my hifi, how this is hurting the band I don't know, you can't buy a CD of this concert anywhere... Floyd keep doing what you're doing man! You rock!

Jon Savage remarked that New Order would be the next Pink Floyd. I seem to remember it was on the BBC Radio 1 documentary on JD/NO in '87. Something like: "..by the time they release their fourth album, they'll be the next Pink Floyd". "They seem to have done it." He may have said it on The New Order Story too. I've recently bought the whole PF back catalogue, it's good stuff. There are certainly parallels; unique artwork and sound. Also band infighting!

Worked on their Maine road gig a few years ago , it was like a small city ( no pun intended ), two mates were doin the back line and we only met up when the thing was struck the next day . Seen a few Floyd tours too, startin with Animals at Bingley hall ( ? ) Yeah Bingley hall , Staffs. Old cattle place, quite apt. Take the piss out of Floyd from the safetypoint/viewpoint of ownin all their official output in UK If there is gonna be an Hipgnosis versus Saville debate, I'll be on the side of Thorgersen,out of respect for me old art teacher who put me onto his work. That said, both studios are easy enough to recognise. Went to Waters' solo gig at MEN arena,okay in a karaoke way. He smiled though,that was a bit disconcerting

Not to knock Floyd, but this is all nonsense.

If the artists are selling their work, and you offer it for free, you're hurting them financially. That's why it's illegal. A blanket statement that you're not hurting them doesn't make it so.

You're also hurting them artistically. You are making the artistic decision about what work is suitable for public release. That is a decision that rightfully belongs to the artist. The fact that you have the technology to release their material does not mean that the decision to release their material belongs to you. They are the artist, and the decision about what material to release belongs to them. When you release work that they have made the artistic decision not to release, you're hurting them artistically.

Again, not to pick on you, Floyd, but your blanket denials are nonsense, and the fact that others are doing the same thing doesn't justify it.

Hate to see you get busted, Floyd and others. Probably should remove the stuff that is commerically available in stores. Keep the live stuff and the NLA stuff.

There was a nasty rumour that city had their season team photo done on the day ..... so they'd have a crowd in the background. City's next team photo, with backdrop of a full stadium, will doubtless feature unsuspecting Chillie Pepper Fans
