The Oscars sucks.

It's all for the money... no artistic values at all.

I say that having Brazil's City of God with 4 nominations. I don't like it at all, as I said in an old topic...

Les Invasions Barbares, however, is a good movie.

City of God was a great movie.

I was happy to see Elfman nominated for Big Fish, Keisha whatsername for Whale Rider, Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray for Lost in Translation, the screenplay of American Splendor, and the people in 21 Grams. Looks to be a good bunch of people to get picked from. Too bad there's so much politics and money involved.

Love the Oscars, I love how seriosly the ' old Hollywood ' seem to take it, y'know refering to Oscar as if he was flesh and blood. I like watching the Gone ,but not forgotten bit, cos invariably Mrs garymac says , ' I thought he was dead anyway' or ' what was she in ? I like the Oscar presented to the person least likely to be here next year and the Oscar won by person mostly snubbed by previous Oscars It's all Bollox of course, but as usual I'll watch it live with beer, popcorn and icecream. Of course I saw it, the movie is a huge sucess here in the "alternative circuit", which I'm a regular. It was so sucessful that The Decline of The American Empire is being shown again at theaters here in Rio de Janeiro, but I didn't have the time to watch it yet, since I was too young when it was first screened.

C'est très bon aussi pour pratiquer mon français... which, as you can see, needs a lot of practice...

Are you ? City of god is wonderful, best brazilian film ever, one of the best flicks I've ever seen in my life! As for the so-called "artistic value", are you really going to dispute City of god's direction, camera work and photography? Then surely you know bugger all about it... Or you're going to say you din't like the violence?

The "Dead Reel" is a nice way to catch up on who died, but I have no horse in the race this year (loved ROTK, but there's no acting noms )

Anyway, it's superfical celebrity crap...and I love it!

Rodrigo, you may have a wonderful NO cover - probably my favorite -, but you don't understand a shit about movies. Best brazilian movie ever?!?!?!?!Ridiculous. Given you surely have never taken photography or screenwriting lessons in your life, which is the only possible explanation as to why your criteria should be so subjective, it baffles me as to what your choice would be. Do you even have one, or do you just enjoy playing the pseudo-intellectual? ;)

me & sialom had a chat aboutt his when it came out - I raved about it, he didn't. opinions - they're different. I was looking at it from a cinematic experience set in a place far from home - whole different perspective.

Well, can there be another perspective? And what would be the value of it if it didn't take the cinematic experience into consideration?

Playing the pseudo-intellectual is my favorite business.:D Don't be so square-minded thinking that ONLY studied people can express their opinions on movies... some of the best directors and criticians have never taken any "official" movie class, this is bullshit. As for me, even thought I'm a lawyer, I am post-graduated in Film History, and I'm still studing movies... am I qualified enough for you now? "City of God" is a product, Rodrigo. And there's nothing wrong with that - movies were created, first of all, for entertainment -, since it's treated like one. At the moment its producers start saying it's a piece of art, I say: it's a piece of crap.

Ok, maybe I'm giving off the idea I'm more aggressive than I actually am... I hate confrontations and I have no problems with you, Spider, so I hope you took my previous posts as they were meant to be taken: humorously, rather than aggressively. ;) The same goes for you, Nick, as I only meant my post about brazilians as a joke. Having said all this, maybe I owe you an apology, Spider, because I didn't even know what you thought about City of god and I just started slagging you off... Sorry, man! But I still stand my ground that City of god is head and shoulders above the vast majority of the brazilian output, both technically and historically. Saying it's product does not persuade me of anything against it - these days, what exactly isn't one? Yet does it make it a lesser artistic accomplishment?
