Are there any true Elvis fans here too?

I'm a huge New Order fan. But the other side of me is being a huge Elvis fan too. I know it's too subjective, but what can I do, if the first music I started to listen to was Elvis when I was 13? When at the age of 16 I got into the Sex Pistols, Nick Cave, Dead Can Dance, Joy Division and finally New Order I let Elvis go... But then growing older I started to listen to and to collect Elvis recordings too. I just wonder, if there are any Elvis fans here as well.

Me. Not a huge fan, but IMHO the greatest male vocalist ever, what a voice. The King.

I think he has some awesome songs, and just his persona is mind blowing. I respect his talent, but not the man himself since he drank and ate himself to death, but is he really dead??

It's nice you people still appreciate Elvis from Memphis. My wife is way too American and she does like Elvis (yahoooooo!) but not New Order (ohhhh). I know, New Order are kinda anti-feminal. They won't sing "Come up baby and I'll give you a kiss", they'd rather offer a kiss of death. :D

True, NO does not have many cheezy love songs. My wife loves BLT despite seeing Barney dance to it. Most of their songs are not sappy but explore real feelings not false expectations. I would wager that Run Wild is a better love song than anything Elvis wrote. Errr, Elvis did not write songs.

Just look at a new thread I made in the Digital Republic forum, ha :) But I guess I fail to make any poll (that's my first one). Alas, Elvis did not write songs indeed (though he contributed music to "Love Me Tender" and "Heartbreak Hotel" as far as I know).

I'm not totally "hating on Elvis", but I can't really help but think he changed for the worse after the stint in the Army, and the endless movies Col. Parker forced on him certainly don't scream "Rock at its finest!"

On the other hand, taken solely for his singing and music, he is "the King", and as John Lennon said "without Elvis, there wouldn't be a Beatles" or much of any other kinds of rock. Plus, the guy could sing some awe-inspiring material (Hearbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Love Me Tender, It's Now or Never). The fact that he became a victim of his fame later on shouldn't take away from the music he made that still has some relevance to today's music.

My little sister, on the other hand, loves everything Elvis (she even has a cardboard standup figure of him that she keeps in her room )

I find Elvis like the Beatles so entrenched in your pyshce that it takes a shift in context to appreciate or the discovery of a hitherto unknown(to you) track. It took listening to 'Tomorrow Never Knows' for me to get over my Beatles phobia. They have both made the music we grow up with and hear so often, to the point were you no longer have the ability to hear it. A bit like New Order fans and Blue Monday but shift the focus of your listening experience and all retain the ability to dazzle. Elvis' music was used in a series called Neat and Tidy. Not sure how big it was in the USA but it had a very quirky feel to it. It was shown on channel 4 in the UK and was screened about 1990. It used 'Guitar Man' as the main theme and like a good d.j. can work Blue Monday into a set and shift the focus of your experience, this show managed to make me reassess my opinion of Elvis.

Suspicious Minds from the 68 comebcak special is an amazing performace.

Finally got around to listening to the bulk of the second disc for "Get Happy", there's a great alternate version of "I can't Stand Up (For Falling Down)" that almost sounds like a torch song
