It appears that the Yankees will be getting Alex Rodriguez. May I be the first to say that Steinbrenner is pure evil.

Now looking at the actual deal, if it is finalized; the Yankees would give up their most talented young pitcher in Contreras, a perennial All-Star in Alfonso Soriano, and maybe a minor league catcher in order to get Alex Rodriguez. No matter how good Arod is, the Yankees would be left with a hole in their pitching staff, which contains Mussina, K Brown, Vasquez, Lieber. The Yanks will need to sign another pitcher to fill the 5th spot. Their main starting pitchers, other than Vasquez, and relievers are getting old or are very injury prone. I hope Brown's arm falls off when he throws his first nasty sinker.

Damn I feel sorry for the Sox, but as the season progresses we'll see, with such a deal happening, that the Yanks will have upped their payroll to 190 million and have an ERA of 4.5

Yeah, George has ruined the Yanks for me, I was rooting for them to lose just so he'd have a fit and go through the wholesale cleaning of the clubhouse that typifies a Steinbrenner fit. With Pettite, Clemens (an ass, but still the Rocket) and Wells fleeing the ship, you can't help but wonder where the hell the pitching is supposed to come from. It's all well and good to have one of the best closers to play the game, but that don't mean shit if you haven't got some decent starters and set-up men. From what I saw of the Yanks' staff this past year, the minute the ball was taken from the three great starters the shit hit the fan.

On the other hand, A-Rod has been wasting away in Texas, and the Rangers aren't gonna be making a play for the pennent anytime soon. I'd personally have liked him to go to the Red Sox, but anywhere he goes he's gonna be a star attraction.

Besides, the Sox have Schilling now, and the Astros have Pettite and Clemens. Houston vs. Boston in '04?

The Yanks look like they're going into another tailspin like they experienced after the 1981 Series (I don't know much about that Series, but I do know the Yanks lost) when they couldn't get a decent team on the field. I'm surprised Torre hasn't thrown up his hands in frustration over Steinbrenner, but without Zim I think he could be on his way out after this season. Any team would give their right arms to have Torre overseeing them, and I don't think George will be able to control his temper if the Yanks fall again in another Fall Classic.

I expect to see an Anaheim-Philly World Series, but I'll still be rooting for my hopeless Dodgers. At least we will still have Gagne

Agreed that it's unbelievable that the Yanks are set to acquire A-Rod, overall this obviously isn't good for baseball. Thumbs down on that aspect George, in a major way

Once again on a personal level, though, as one who detests the Bosox and some of their fans, can't help but chuckle as they squirm in disbelief at the actions of the "Evil Empire". Never cared for 'em one way or another until the last 15 years or so when I started working with some, and they have definitely made me wish they go 39-123 or so every year; the bitterness they exude over the Yankees makes the Auburn/Alabama rivalry look like a love-fest, no small miracle, and the fact that they seem to relish their "underdog" role (i.e. complaining about Bill Buckner and Game 6, when they had the chance to win Game 7).

and now the yankees might sign greg maddux! god damn! id love to see him return to the cubs but the cubs are historically speaking, cheap bastards. thats why maddux left in the first place. id rather see maddux in the AL than the NL unless he's with the cubs of course. he's 38 but still is a damn fine pitcher.
