“Ex-girlfriend”

You come in here and we act like strangers. You think about what once drew you to me. We both look different – we’re older. And you’ve gone all the way from the most important person in my life to someone else I occasionally bump into down the pub.

The other day you came in with someone. Of course he had no idea how much metaphysics lingered heavily in the air with the smoke of the cigarettes and the stench of other nights, other people, other metaphysics neither yours not mine.

I know we’re not together. And I know how we’ve got here. But it hurts me, it always will, to see you there, glowing like you always do, and you’re not mine anymore. And nothing that was once so sacred matters anymore. Everything we put into it: all the words, all the thoughts, all the promises, all the sweat and tears – all gone to waste. All worthless now. Erased by your laugh, the way you throw your hair, you kissing this twat in the forehead.

You have no idea how much I miss you. You have no idea how much it hurts.
