what if it is a mild case that really just means you have a hard time sleeping? if i am at this point, do i have to stop it before it gets worse, or is it feesable to just maintain it at this level?

when you also start using it to get up in the morning, i think you'll be in too deep.

Don't mess with it. Alcoholism is by far the worst drug disease and the one which causes more deaths, you better be an heroin addict, you got more chances of cleaning up without serious damage. Check your liver. Getting drunk is cool when you go out for the weekend, but if you really abuse the fun becomes nightmare, the worst you can imagine.

If you wake up & think i need a drink yeah its very bad. Nothing wrong with gettin pissed now & then though.

yeah, i'm not waking up to a drink yet. i was just lying in bed the other night, having a hard time falling to sleep when i realized that it was the first night in over a week that i can't remember having at least one drink. then i started to expound upon that, and that i realized when i get home from my work-commute, i'm always craving a beer. so then i started to get paranoid... i'll get it figured out.

hey chunks, are you closer to the 94 or the 8? i live right on texas st, off the 8, up on the south hill.

Not sure about that, puff makes you go mental in the end and smoking it RIPS your lungs apart.

With, ahem, chronic use for years and years, that is possible, marijuana has more carinogens, etc. But the fact is that a relatively small amount of alcohol can kill someone (and their liver after a few years), and marijuana is impossible to OD on. Alcohol is highly addictive, and weed is more of a bad habit than anything (i.e., easy to break) Now I'm not a stoner, just giving the facts, or the way I see em :D

*Hey Sean, a beer when you get home is more Homer Simpson / Fred Flinstone / Howard Cunningham than a real alcoholic. ONE beer after work is alright, you've worked, you come home, sit on the sofa, watch telly and drink a beer. It's alright. I always have to drink coffee and smoke a cigarette after lunch (and more during the rest of the day), that's much worse. Some drink a glass of wine for dinner, some drink a whiskey in the evening, it's alright really. Alcoholism means you drink three or four times a day, real alcoholism is doing breakfast with a bottle of wine, going to work drunk, coming home and having half a bottle of whiskey... Anyway yes, alcohol is definitely much, much more damaging than marijuana, which also causes much less damage than the smoke of legal tobacco cigarettes.

yeah, i'm not worried about full fledged alcoholism. i just worry about sinking into a patern that'll then create a dependence. a beer after work is fine. i worry about a beer after work everyday to the point where if i happen not to have one, will i get edgy? will i not be able to fall asleep because of a mental dependence? it's all very minor, but the last thing i need is another vice.

chunks, how far is your exit passed college or mass ave?

i agree and disagree, ive talked to recovering alcoholics who did not drink 3 or 4 times a day, it's not the number of times you drink a day, it's the thought process. like "i cant relax after work if i dont have a beer". why do you need it to relax, what do you feel physically and emotionally if you dont have that drink after work? there are tons of scenarios like this that should'nt be dismissed. other signs from people ive talked to at a few AA meetings I went to say it's a pattern, they need a drink monday, tuesday , and sunday at X time and if they dont they freak, basically drinking excessivly a day is'nt the only way to define an alcoholic.

should note that I am not an alcoholic, but know a few, some got help, others didnt, and others keep re-lapsing.

You drink all day unless you start in the morning;)

I stayed home last night instead of taking my wife out to an Irish bar to drink with her friends. I was ill and really did not want the hastle of dealing with a crowded smokey bar full of drunken women withj large tits. My cold sucks and I have survival camping this weekend.

Now if she would have brought me a gallon of margaritas or a gallon of rum and coke, I would have drank til I puked.

It only takes ONE drink a year to be an alcoholic. It's all about the use of that ONE drink that is the determining factor.

Sean: Something like...5 or 6 exits up from there...never counted. But 3 after the 125/94 interchange, I know that much.

IN RE Dreaming about drinking...

I once had a dream inwhich I took a hit of acid. Good dream til I woke up.

Right, it involves both aspects, the quantity and the psychological addiction. Of course if you drink much every day you're an alcoholic, wether you know it or not. If you drink a beer and feel edgy if you miss it then it's certainly not a real addiction to the substance, but a psychological problem (it's almost as you're addicted because you think you are, even if you actually aren't). Of course it's still less dangerous anyway, better being addicted to a beer after work than to 10 cigarettes a day (which is another psychological problem, it's true cigarettes contain addictive substances, but if you don't smoke too much you can quit when you want, I always do when I have flu, I don't feel bad and then I start smoking again only because I need it with my mind who likes the taste and to release tension). In this case, I just wouldn't worry. Don't feel guilty for a beer, but don't feel bad if you miss it. Take it easy. Then try to miss it for a couple of days, but don't wonder "oh what will happen when I get home and don't dtrink my beer", don't worry, it won't happen anything unless you expect it to happen. Sometimes we build ourselves our problems. If you don't worry it'll be alright.

yeah, i'm concerned with the psychology. but i don't think it is much of a problem now, i just don't want it to be a problem in the future. no worries here. thanks all.

chucks, what do you say for a meet up sometime soon? should we try to rally all the san diegan noolers? all 3 (or 4) of us?

I tend not to worry about it all these days anymore. I had my period many moons ago where I was a drinking idiot...and I learned my lesson. So sue me if I like to come home and have a beer or 12. If someone really gives a rats poop enough to label me because if it or add me to a sheet of statistic, then I say that that person or persons needs to get a life even more than I do!!!

On the other hand...

Sean, we should definately sometime have a San Dog Piss-up.

Depends on my mood.

Sometimes...and in no particular order sir:

  1. Taste of Italy - Great Martini Bar (Plus I am good friends with the owners...kinda helps)

Hold on a minute...I need another drink (See thread on alcoholism)

  1. The Field - Irish pub downtown. Actually, any damn Irish pub is good. Hooley's here in Rancho San Diego is great!!

  2. The Island Bar - Great Coronado pub with live tunage.

  3. Caines - Mission Beach, Live bands, Booze...and the best Carnitas in town!!

But ultimately...I can care less!!!:thumb:

My dad was an alchoholic just after my parents were married, staying out late, being gone for awhile, and being abusive toward my mother. That taught me a lot about what to do if I ever started drinking (my mom and grandparents would've never approved of me starting at any rate back then); using it as a means to empower oneself at the expense of others is definitely not worth it.

That being said, I still like to have a drink or four, but almost always on the weekend (it's a good way to unwind after a hard week on Friday), I've gotta get up way too early most weekday mornings to allow myself that indulgence. Rest assured that the memories of the rough times my parents had (good news, they're still married, it's better than ever for them), it's just important to keep in mind that alcohol is a very tricky monster to keep ahold of, luckily it's worked out well for me.
