postgraduate degree - any suggestions?

hi all,

i've been lurking here for a long time, (i mean digital republic actually- coz there are tooo many posts here.) but i don't really post since i'm afraid my expression in english is not good enough. anyways, i'm from taiwan and i decided to take advanced education in the uk.

i want to take conversion course in computer science. besides the information i gathered, i want to listen to the people who likes new order as well as i do. so can anyone give me some ideas, like which university to go? i hope that they can tour in the year i stay there so i can see them live! (in fact that's what i'm there for :p)

any help would be appreciate. :)

having visited london (for the anti war demo in november) and mcr (for the saville show), i can say both have their advantages. nowhere has galleries, architecture, etc like london. london has it. if youre into chineese acid jazz fused with classical dance, then theres proberbally a centre for it in london.

mcr is better in other ways, fucking great gothic stuff going on. the whole city is like a cathedrial (it certainly formed the sound of no/jd), but whats with all the " trendy" coffee bars ,etc? its trying to be londonium, and it shouldnt. its edgier, better. the salford keys are a "travis"ty me thinks. we have the same problems here. "regeneration" gone totally wrong

Manchester is so much better than london.

For a start, London is riduclously expensive, both for accomdation and living costs, never mind a social life. The only place more expensive is Dublin. In manchester you can live cheaply, with good student accomdation, and have a great social life (5th av, 42's, south, dry bar, which isnt what it was unfortunately, etc etc), its also a great university, manchester proper that is. Not manchester met

Plus, Manchester does not have the problem of anti war protests every time the hippies, socialists etc etc just fancy a day off work.

Saying that, the modern manchester architecture is very good, look at URBIS for example.

And i suppose i was looking for the term deadbeat, more as an umbrella phrase through, covering socialists, hippies, stupid people who cant grasp the reality of international politics, the dirty etc etc

sorry that i've been busy with work and the applications so i didn't post for a long long time. i just came here and read the news lately. anyways, after seeing your opinions i've applied for these universities:

1. Computing @ Cardiff University
2. Informatics @ University of Edinburgh
3. Computer Science @ University of Hertfordshire
4. Computer Science @ University of Kent
5. Management of IT @ University of Nottingham
6. Information Technology @ University of Salford

i guess kent and cardiff are south enough? (i don't need a school with lots of girls.. coz i already am one.) and you should know the reason why i picked salford, haha.. i'm not so interested in their programmes in fact. but since it's barney and hooky's hometown, who cares! :p

btw i just got salford's offer several minutes ago and now am waiting for the others. thanks for your suggestions and you are always welcome if you have more to say about those six uni. above.

now i just wish new order would REALLY release their album this year SO I CAN FINALLY SEE THEIR LIVE! I HAVE LOVED THEM FOR TEN YEARS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

A mate of mine has just finished a Computer Science degree at Hertfordshire, said it was well worth it, learned a lot. All of those listed have good IT reputations, Salford's not bad.

Our Joey's got a thing for James Maniac Roadsweeper though.....even though he lives in Maida Vale !

thanks Detweiler 3.63, though i dunno what your second post means..

of course i'd like to stay at manchester.. ppl say that i'm coz i applied no london schools, but im afraid the living cost will be way tooo high and i love manchester bands! actually i had an interview with the associate head of the international office and mentioned that i love the bands from manchester.. new order of course, james, the stone roses... etc. ( i mentioned them in another school's interview, but the lady thought bernard "butler" is the lead vocalist.. i corrected her anyway) that may sound crazy but at that moment i realised i'm going to a place where everybody knows new order!! (i'm from the country that no one on the street knows them.)

i choose the schools by their programmes (mostly about hci and ai) and salford is a bit different from them. there are only four u. in manchester- manchester metropolian/ u of manchester, umist and u of salford. unfortunately i don't like any of these programmes so i didn't apply them.

i enjoyed my postgrad time at st. andrews. ever thought about applying there? it's a good uni, and to top it off, st. andreans drink more than students at any other UK university, apparently. probably 'cause there's fcuk all else to do in northeast fife!
