NHL Playoffs Thread

Like the good hockey fan I am, since my team, the Kings, choked by losing a million straight games just at the end of the season, I do not care who wins, but I have an inkling the stanley cup final will be between Detroit and NJ, that's if Rafalski and Stevens can come back in time to play in the playoffs; if they don't come back, then I like Toronto because of Belfour and the playoff experienced veterans they traded for this year, Francis and Leetch. Montreal has no chance I'm sorry to say .

Now that the MLB opening day is coming near, Spot how's your team been doing, other than playing better than my team in spring training :\ohwell:

It's hard for me to think the Habs can succeed in the East when six teams have 100 pts or more and they are not one of those teams, plus you guys only have had three points in the last 6 games. talking about the dodgers, we acquired that cleveland OF, Milton Bradley (same name as the boardgame brand) who fought w/ his coach. Problem is the guy had fights with two players last year, and out allstar catcher LoDuca was one of them. The Dodgers tend to have great team chemistry , I hope Gagne will bean him with a fastball in practice if he starts acting up

Well, before those 4 games, the Habs had won 12 of their last 14 games, so don't worry, it's up and down, basically they should start a high just about now ;) The Habs need Roy back, they've done nothing since he left; too bad he retired, for I'd have liked to see him play w/ the current CO roster. They need a guy like Jacques Demers (sp?); he coached the '93 team to beat Gretzky, hence preventing LA from winning their first cup Better yet, they could bring Scotty Bowman out of retirement :D

That was the only game they lost in that sequence unfortunately for you, and the only one they lost in this road trip ;)

BTW Tristan, Jose Théodore was the MVP 2 years ago, he's still quite good, maybe not to the Roy level, but he's probably the 2nd best goalie in the east, so I have full confidence. Problem w/ Jose is he's not consistent; if he's on a good streak, then the Habs can do amazingly well in the playoffs. I'm just being hard on him since it's looking like he'll be facing a team I enjoy, and I don't want him to do well.

I just found out the Canadiens will be playing Boston in the first round, so Nic I'll be rooting for your Habs.

Lets see if my Islanders can make it out of the first round this season. i think they do match up against tampa well. i also think the bruins remember what the habs did to them a couple of years back and i think boston with an unproven no. 1 goalie is in for more of the same, besides a montreal has been upsetting heavily favored boston teams for ages. i do think, even though i cant stand them, that if the leafs get hot they could come out of the east. i really really think that if the wings get outta nashville alive they will win the cup again. the preds can be tough though and vokoun is a very good goalie.

Don't underestimate Ottawa... I think they are due to eliminate the Leafs for once...

Otherwise, this will remain a running gag for ages.

Fortunately for us, the Maple Leafs are so old, if we face them in the 2nd round (which can happen only if the Isle and Flyers win), they will be tired.. very tired :p

Anyways, I don't get my hopes too high, it's already a miracle they made it where they are! Ottawa always seems to have a bunch of hype, but they neever seem to pull through; I think playoff hockey is too physical for their quick style.

I agree, the Leafs will be their nemesis. I would not be suprised to see a game-winning game 7 goal from Francis or Leetch to kill off the Sen.s. The Sen.s plyoff livelihood will depend on Lalime and co. like always.

I think we should talk about TB more and the brilliant French Canadian, Martin St. Louis.

However, I'm concerned to see you can get the Art-Ross by only having 93 points.. I'm missing the 200+ points years of Gretzky and co...

There will never be another lemieux. and as far as the nhl goes we may never see somebody score over 105 Points in a season!, remember the 80's when there were like 20 guys with 120 Points! too many teams too many defensive minded coaches and not enough superstars to go around. but i am excited for the playoffs

I don't like Cloutier, and I think that Iginla will have a field day against him.

Three weeks ago I would have said the Stars could beat anybody, but they slowed down at the end of the season, and i think Forsberg and Sakic will have fun against the playoff choker named Marty, remember last year? If Kariya is really hurt then maybe the series will go to 7, but if he's playing somewhat healthy I don't think the Stars fair a good chance. All I hope is the Wings don't go far in the playoffs. I don't really care about the West too much mainly cause I think all the teams are rather boring, 'cept the Flames. I'm cheering for a Flames-Leafs/Devils final.

Sharks fan here...did you catch the season ending game!! I was there...2 goals in the last 17 seconds by the sharks to tie and them the win in OT...unbelievable!!!

Despite the fact that no penalty was called on the slashing and that Kovalev stopped playing and bumped into Souray, which lead to the winning goal, Kovalev was our best player that night....

But I can't believe the NHL is still allowing to have no penalty called in the playoffs... damn it, you can't get respect out of this... changing rules depending of the score and the time...

The Flames-Canucks game was amazing; triple overtime goal by Brendan Morrison, but we have to give the Flames credit for tying up the game after being down 4-0.

On a side note, the Dodgers have the best record in the majors after sweeping the gnats (SF Giants)

Congratulations Nic and Seb, your Habs won game 7 after being down 3-1. I say this has to be one of the best first rounds I have ever seen. If the Leafs lose, then I'll join the Canadiens bandwagon.

Congrats to Nick and Seb, it's a very sweet feeling to win like the Habs did even better when it's against Boston. My coworker from Beantown, who was already in a grouchy mood today, he thought Patriots Day should be a national holiday for all, will definitely be chagrined even more after being so mouthy the last couple of weeks. :)

I feel sorry for Sens fans they got such a shoddy effort from Lalime and Prusek (sp?). Plus the refs had some questionable calls here and there benefitting the Leafs, but w/ Eddie's performance the Leafs were bound to win.

i do think the lightning are for real, but that doesnt mean they cant be beaten, it will be an interesting series, i think the islanders after game 3 just didnt work hard enough to beat tampa, the habs obviously know what it will take to win which should make it a great Series. lets see how the franch canadians of tampa handle the pressure of playing in Montreal, granted its not the Forum.

Here are some stats: This is the first time in the playoffs that the Flames have a 2 game lead. : 4-1 this is the biggest gap the flames have won by so far this playoffs

What does all this mean? (nothing really) But The Flyers and the lighting better hope it does not mean the Flames are getting better Because they might just walk over them

gotta hand it to the flames...they crushed us at home...still giving them the edge overall but at least my boys kept some pride by not getting swept

i am so pulling for the flames,you just haver to love the way they play , sutter hockey, they never give up. i love mike ricci and cheechoo, but the flames play fun hockey and deserve to win. in the other series, despite them ousting my islanders i'd like to see the Bolts go to the finals, i hate the flyers and big dave andreychuk deserves a cup, how come nobody is making a big deal out of this like they did for Bourque, or even steve thomas and Oates Last season?

well borque didnt win the cup the year he was traded, oates signed with the ducks the beginning of that season, but thomas was a deadline acquisition if i remember correctly. i think a bolts/f;ames finals will be very exciting, a good way to remember the N.H.L. Before the long lockout. we still have the World cup to look foward to though.

I must admitt this has got to be one of the weirdest playoff series yet. Just when you think the Flyers are out they come back, and are making a really good series out of it.

And I must admitt I thought the flame was burned out after game 4, The Flames really did play bad. But then they won 3-0 in game 5. I guess the Flames do have home ice advantage this series after all Even if home ice seems to be in San Jose???

Well lets just hope the Flames can turn this around and finally win at home in game 6. Calgary will go into a frenzy if we have another game 7. They already opened up the football stadium so people can watch the games on a giant big screen tv. But if San Jose does come back and win I will go for them in the finals

My favorite part of last night's game was Nabokov misreading Iginla when he got the shorthanded goal.

how great is Iggy Playing? Flames make the Finals the Conn Smythe has got to be his, he is scoring, killing penalties, had a few fights in the detroit series, Doing it all, Mika has got to me mentioned too, but iginla is the star of the team and is playing like a big one.

Calgary is going cazy right now, half of our downtown is closed because everybody is on the streets and all I can hear out side are car horns blowing!

I hope the Flyers make it because I know Tampa will be really tuff.

Philly seems to be doing it. here in the U.S. after the game i dont think they Showed the streets of calgary, they had a quick interview with craig conroy then went straight to " Baseball Tonight" i Remember in '89 when the flames won they showed calgary and the place was a madhouse(i still have the tape of the final game), its great to see that becuase here there is no passion for hockey, well there was a litte when the rangers finally won(i hated that im an isles fan), but that was short lived. well game seven on saturday for philly and tampa, should be a good one, i hope the bolts win one for Big Dave Andreychuk

I will agree with you that next year is up in the air for the Flames, But they are a young team so they could be a power house to be recken with in the future. But Calgary has a problem holding on to players once they want more money

We'll moider the bums! That's the reaction of most Calgary Flames fans to last night's Tampa Bay Lightning win -- which will see them in the Stanley Cup final against the Flames next week.

"Tampa Bay's a bunch of girls -- we'll beat them all over the ice in four straight," said John Dosen, 41, a service technician, as he watched last night's bout at Beckham's Pub and eatery, 1355 32 Ave. N.E.

But Tampa Bay's 2-1 downing of the Flyers, Dosen's favourite team, did hurt.

"I might have to actually cry and I'm a macho guy, I don't cry," said Dosen, with a laugh.

Also disappointed by the Flyers' loss was Jaret Carlberg, a 27-year-old trucker.

"I've been a Philly fan for the last 10-15 years," he said, adding his loyalty is now with the Flames. "It'll be a good series between Tampa and Calgary."

Tom Kelly said he was actually wishing, for the Flames sake, that Philly would have been last night's winners as their goaltending is definitely lacking.

But even the Lightning haven't quite got the goaltending talent the Flames have, added Kelly, 39, who's a chiropractor.

"The Flames should have hoped they'd play the Flyers," he said. "(But) goaltending is going to hurt (Tampa Bay also) in the end."

He said he's expecting the Flames will take the Cup in six.

Beckham's manager Blair Houston agrees.

"The Flames are solid now, they'll do well against anybody," Houston said, adding Tampa will prove a challenge.

"They're a very intense hockey team and they play with a lot of intensity -- there's a lot of fire behind that team."

The Tampa night life may prove the most daunting challenge for Calgary's players, said Mike Denbigh, 55, a photographer.

"I think it will be very difficult for them to maintain focus," said Denbigh.

They have to keep up the intensity, agreed Rob Askew, 61, a photographer.

"It doesn't matter (who they play) as long as they keep playing hard the way they have," Askew said.

The Flames are in Tampa to kick off the best-of-seven Stanley Cup final series on Tuesday, with Game 2 going on Thursday.

The Flames then return to Calgary to host Games 3 and 4 Saturday and Monday, May 31, at the 'Dome.

As for Calgary, Yes we are a very western city. And we use western themes for everything. And yes we are sometimes called Dallas north because we are rich in oil and are cities do look similar. We are also sometimes called Nashville North. Every year we have a festival called the Stampede dubbed "The greatest outdoor show on earth" And yes I do own a cowboy hat. And Yes we have some yahoo's who wear their hats all year round (Like you saw) And all the red you were seeing were $110.00 jerseys. Not like the Flyers who were giving away $2.00 cheap Orange shirts, that just made the color of the stadium look unbearable to watch. And the seats in the saddledome are green and blue. Because they are suppose to help the players eyes during practice. I miss the Olympic Saddledome as well. But Pengrowth is better then The Canadian Airlines saddledome. Well that's my Calgary lesson for today.

I will look at NDP this year because our Labor laws suck, but I don't think it will madder. So I might try Liberal for the first time in my life.

I have never been so scared about a game in my life. Alot of people here in Calgary felt if we lost today it would be over. It looked like Tampa Gay (oops I mean Tampa bay) were going to do it in OT.

I can't believe we are 1 game away from the cup. I sooo hope we do it in Calgary. It would mean so much for the city.

I thought it was funny to see Tampa give away free $2.00 white shirts to show the city has spirit, when Calgary does all on their own, with $110.00 jerseys. You can never match Calgary. And the Saddledome sold out tonight $5.00 a ticket to watch the game on big screen tv.

Did anybody see Darrel Sutter's interview. Very funny, its going to cost him a fine after the finals, but its worth it.

What a game, what about iggy's goal!!!!! and i must say i picked saprykin before OT started to score the goal, right after the game i went to play the Lottery so if my luck holds up and i hit tomorrow the first thing i am doing is taking a trip to calgary. flames dominated the first half of the game, but they lost a lot of steam in thew 3rd, the goalies in this series have been awesome!!!!i figures saprykin would score because he was working so hard all night long nice to see it payed off for him, jim were you at the saddeldome?

No I'm afraid I was not at the Saddledome. :( But I do have a 57" widescreen tv so It was quit nice to watch hockey on that. I was going to try and get tickets to the next game, but they sold out faster then I could turn on my computer. This year is different, the only way to get tickets is by computer or phone.

I had to pick up my wife after the game from work and the streets were packed with people standing by the road cheering for the flames and people honking their car horns as they drive by. totally wild. And they had to close down a major sreet in the downtown so people could party. Last night there were over 65000 people on the street (They now call it the red mile) and they said they are expecting over 100 000 people if the Flames win Saturday. This is much bigger then 1989, I think because we were expected to win in 1989, and this year we were lucky to make the playoffs.

If you win the money and come to Calgary, I will take you to the red mile (The Flamesgirls are there ) Good luck getting tickets for the game. I hear they are going for $2000.00 on the net, and people from Australlia are bidding on them. But hey get me a ticket too!
