Not as bad as the SF Valley where buses come only every hour (half hour or 15 minutes if the route is in a ghetto), and the routes themselves are inconvenient. Don't even think about transferring from one route to another. No subway in the SF Valley unless you live in N Hollywood or Universal City, and Metrolink rail is convenient but isn't cheap.
LOL the last bus ride I took was from someplace near Brentwood to Holywood. We were drunk and the gas was full of hot Latino babes. I should have been pummelled. Cab ride back.
Brentwood to Hollywood, not bad. Try taking buses in Arleta or Panorama City, or anywhere on MLK Bl or Pico. Not fun.
Considering the bus that takes me near work was fifteen minutes late today, I'm not terribly fond of Philly's public transit system, aka SEPTA, either.
My bus was 10 minutes late this morning. Again. As always. But the connecting bus was on time. I had a choice between waiting a half hour for the next bus, or walking a half hour to work. I decided to walk.
Then there was the time a guy took off his t-shirt, made a Pharoah's headress out of it, and announced to everybody on the bus "I invented this!"
Why do I hate public transportation?
Hum, let's see... the Montreal subway was on a list by Al-Quaida somewhere.. is that a good reason? :D
Seriously, I've never seen any other subway in any other city (always took the car, so..), but it's hot, you can never get a damned seat at rush hour, and it's becoming a ruin as we speak.
They re-introduced suburban trains a while ago, those are very very good...
the cleanest subway i've ever been in is the cairo subway. nice stations, as well.
the worst? well, good old NYC, of course! but i wouldn't want it any other way....

I probably would've told him, as they did on Seinfeld, "There's a feather in your cap!!!" Suppose I'd just be glad it wasn't one of those drunks doing his elephant impersonations again. ;)

Well, I've heard a few times that the Montreal subway is incredibly clean.
I've also read it's not usual to see so not wide trains...
Sure thing is, Montreal has one of the biggest "underground city" in the world, which is connected to several stations downtown, where you can shop and never actually go outside (very useful in winter)...
One other fact... all subway stations are different, none was done by the same architect.

If I were in New York and had to take the subway, I'd prefer riding the back of a huge rat.

Mind, I think the idea of public transit is a good one. It's just my fellow passengers (and the late buses) that make me look 
at it somedays.
Today's tidbit: A guy on the bus says to the guy across the aisle "I just noticed your tatoo says 'cut here'"...I look over, and he has a horizontal line tatooed across his throat, with the inscription "cut here" tatooed above it!
Hi its Buffy, I catch late night train from city at night and so often there are drunken louts(Quiet ones are OK),beggars and basically the Melbourne train system sucks. The only good thing is that after about 11pm, there are no ticket inspectors at the gates, so you get a free trip!I take a discman so I can pretend to be in another world if approached by a suss character!:)
Id Imagine Car culture central isnt nice to live in. Anyone been to holland? I went there with my bike some years back : heaven
not to mention their public transport.
tristan, how are you going to safely put a subway underground when said ground could bust apart at any moment and bury the poor public transit sods under a million pounds of automobiles and concrete from the 405 falling off its supports? earthquakes rule!
...and don't talk to me about san francisco, 'cuz there all stupid up there anyway.
We need some better public transportation to go from the Valley to the rest of LA, and a subway could work, or maybe a raised rail line... MONORAIL! (just like the Simpsons

in the valley, with all that aluvium sitting on the floor, the ground shakes like jello in a quake. would you ride a subway built in jello? hell no! i am surprised they submersed the red line through hollywood. i mean, the LA basin gets its share of quakes, and with a high water table and a bedding of eroded material, you are playing with fire. well, in this case we could call it "dangerous dirt," which doesn't sound as scary, but whatcha gonna do?
at the same time, you are correct. LA needs better public transit. san diego could use some too.
