Ok...its not their fault but everyone out here in California seems to think that their new music is the second freaking coming...and that the fact that they are touring is a not to miss experience.

I've heard the new track/single on the radio...its ok..in fact its actually pretty good...but absolutely positively not anywhere near as good as Crystal or several other songs from GR!!

Where is the love for NO?? It just really pisses me off that GR and Crystal were ignored here and the Cure is suddenly everyone's favorite band.....grrrrrrr:nonono:

I think your anger is misplaced. The Cure regularly release new material, and regularly tour in support of it. They have kept their fan base alive; New Order hasn't. How many shows did New Order play here when Get Ready was released?

That said, the abysmal state of radio makes it difficult for New Order to get what little new material they do release heard when they (and their contemporaries) can't even get airplay.

Hydrapelican, I am originally from San Jose. I moved to Portland in 2000. Live 105 used to be a great station; by the time I left, it was just another corporate cog in a national chain cranking out the same nu-metal shite every other station in the conglomerate's portfolio was playing. The only way to hear Blue Monday was if they played Orgy's cover. Just out of curiosity, has radio changed in the Bay Area? Are there stations playing the new Cure CD? When I left, the only station playing the old Live 105 roster of artists was also playing 80's crap like, oh, I don't remember, Michael Jackson, for instance. Anything 80's seemed to be their format, rather than (the Brits better brace themselves here) the "alternative" format that Live 105 used to play. So has radio changed for the better since 2000, or is it still nu-metal and "anything 80's"?

I don't listen to the radio anymore, but is the song that you're talking about the one they played on Jay Leno? I thought it was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. In fact, when I was watching them, I remember thinking to myself, "Robert hung around Blink182 too much when they did 'All Of This'."

I don't really remember too much of the song itself, though.

GR kicks the shit out of every Cure album with the possible exception of Entreat and 17 Seconds. GR is more commercially viable than BloodFlowers and the new Cure album.

maybe you are on to something, NO killed its fan base, its refusal to tour the US of A and support GR is just another nail in their coffin.

Yep, I may see the Cure 2 or 3 times this year and NO not once. Am I happy about this?? Hell no.

The scene has improved quite a bit imho. Channel 104.9 came along and showed up Live 105 for exactly what you mention above. 104.9 usually takes most of the real risks and plays new artists without worrying about whether they will "fit" the format...at least to the extent that any "for profit" radio station can/does (the quake being the only exception I ever knew...that is an OOOLLDD bay area station though and long gone.). 104.9 also plays very cool songs from the 80's and ninetys as well...I would say the mix is about 80% new and 20% 80's and 90's. They do have a good feel for what has stood up well from the past and continue to keep in mixed in. 104.9 also seemed to have given Live 105 a much needed kick in the butt as the new program director actually ran promo spots at the beginning of the year promising to widen the format and to go beyond the songs that everyone knows...and they actually have done that...including playing the killers new track that is super catchy and also heard nowhere else. I have heard NO (Love Viglantes and Regret) on Live 105 in the past 5 months (in addition to TF, BM, BLT). As for other 80's stations...there are actually two pretty good ones: 106.5 and 97.3. They both actually try to play a lot of different songs and their mix is about 70% 80's and 30% current. Finally...my favorite local station has to be 103.3 which is the Santa Clara University station...they have no less than 10 DJ's that are very knowledgeable and play fantastic music.

my 2 cents

What did you expect? New Order didn't even tour on the east coast in 2001/2002... there were no support from them at all, Crystal went to #1 and they didn't even released a 2nd single over here.

I'd blame Warner, but what can you say... they don't give a f*ck, that's the spirit..

The Cure though do variety of stuff and play a lot more songs live than New Order, which is pretty good.

But why the hell do we keep try to compare both bands?

Thanks!

I remember 104.9 from around the time when I left; they used to have a show Saturday evenings called "Club 104," where they played club mixes of all of Live 105s former roster of artists. At that time, 104.9 still played some lame stuff during the regular programming (80s stuff that wasn't really alternative), so it sounds like they've maybe gone in the direction Live 105 should've gone? Playing a mix of new alternative with the "classic alternative"?

And you even remembered Live 105's late, great predecessor, The Quake! You might want to check out the audio for station intros from Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer, as well as the Quake CD.

Bay Area radio used to be so good. Hopefully the tradition will continue...

I have noted over the years there can be quite a concentrated hatred of The Cure from New Order fans. I personally like both although I have listened to about a hundred times more New Order than Cure.

I consider TC's "Wish" album (the one with "Friday I'm In Love") a really really great record I always come back to every few years. Tracks like "Doing The Unstuck", and "To Wish Impossible Things" are just fucking great tunes! :thumb: I do realise that Robert Smith's guitar style can be a little like NO's at times, and Hooky might as well have been bassist on alot of their work, but once you get past that, the quality of some of their songwriting becomes clear.

The New Order/Cure similarities used to really irritate me quite a bit but then I realised that some of TC's songs are actually pretty good and I love that bass style so why moan? Smith's vocals can get a little irritating at times but mostly I think his lyrics are quite good. I'm not familiar with any of their recent/forthcoming stuff, but if I liked the sound of it I would certainly *ahem* download a few MP3s :D But I do that with almost every album, if it was really good, I'd be down the CD shop. I think alot of music fans behave like that really.

Finally, I do think Robert Smith looks like a dog's dinner... ageing gracefully obviously didn't occur here :eek3: Anyway, being dragged through a hedge backwards whilst applying your wife's lipstick is obviously all the rage in his street ;) Poor guy, Barney's a style guru by comparison.

Oh well, my £0.02!

Ally.

I love how much time we spend on the Cure here...if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it must be a closet Cure fan! :evil4:

I love both bands (NO much more, of course), it's just kinda silly but fun at the same time :D
