Steady on Shug , one cannot say GAY on the boards now , it upsets the PC sensibilities of a few folk , I'd hate for you to be accused of being homophobic . Incidentaly if you were accused of being homophobic , then if your accuser was using the latin stem HOMO , you would have an irrational fear of the whole human race , having met you only once I know this aint so. However if they were using the Greek stem HOMOS , then one would have a fear people like oneself eg a one eyed brunette would fear another one eyed brunnette , hence you'd be scared of another SHUGLET , having only met you once, this may or may not be the case , probably depends on the ANTI-SHUG's ability to get a round in and share his bifters .
Gotta watch this PC shit Shug , they mess with the Greek and the Latin as well as your heed .
Now then, the reason I brought up that whole use of the word "gay" as a pejorative term is because it has such a common usage amongst youngsters nowadays. I used to say it all the time without thinking and certainly didn't think it that offensive, but when it's such a commonly used phrase to describe something as "lame," then it certainly doesn't become a very friendly term for any homosexuals in the area. Imagine any poor closeted homosexuals in high school who are already terrified by the potential threat of being killed by some bigoted redneck jock types if their sexuality becomes known, only to be faced with a daily barrage of words linking homosexuality as negative. I've broken my own habit of saying it without any difficulty, and I'd just like to help stamp out such a casual use of the adjective "gay" in such a closed-minded context. I personally despise political correctness for its limiting use of language, but I am also strongly in favor of social acceptance for homosexuals. This is a fine line where I am constantly at war with myself over the contradiction between liberal social ideals vs. freedom of expression. I enjoy using increasingly un-PC language to get reactions from people, but my main opposition to the term "gay" as it is used nowadays by the young and politically uninformed is in how casually it is used without any real context.
That said, is it just me or do most the more homophobic comments come from the British contingent on this board?

The words gay and queer have been reclaimed by the gay community , it's not unusual to stroll down Canal street and see a fella wearin a 'queer as fuck' tee shirt , Gay pride tee shirts are now considered a bit passe , granted there is a fella who posts on this board whose comments can be seen in the context of homophobic , however I'd guess that most of the British contingent would view his comments as rather sad and a little archaic . Things have certainly improved over here ( Well, Manchester ) since the days of ' clause 28 ', in fact some things have changed in a strange way, in the media Tom Robinson ; singer and leading gay rights campaigner, was ' outed ' in the late eighties as being a ' straight ' guy. George of the artists/living sculptures Gilbert & George , also has press intrusion on a regular basis trying to ' out ' him as ' straight ' Unimaginable 20 years ago
Perhaps because we dont have the term ' Lame ' as a put down I miss some of your meanings , over here I'd guess that the term 'Sad ' has been hijacked and is used in much the same way as lame , perhaps it's because I am so secure in my own sexuality and that of the people I know , that I dont see the word as a putdown , certainly the younger lot 'round here are a bit creative when it comes to a put down , and the gay contingent are without peer.
I'm impressed that you have an insight into the feelings of a closeted young man or woman , it's heartening that you want to put a positive spin on the whole complex issue, however you seem to have adopted a bit of a self righteous attitude , you assert that the term ( on these boards at least )is used as a negative , you have given up on your once casual use , so now everyone should , at no point have you acknowledged that some posters have a little bit of intelligence or have a natural tolerance/acceptance of all things, situations and people that are 'different '
PC can be okay, in small doses , however the thing that tends to undo the good works of the PC brigade is the Holier than thou attitude of some of it's proponents ( on a par with reformed/ex smokers ), in the UK that is , I cant speak for the US , but the fact that we dont even have the term Redneck ( thick cunt ,maybe )may illustrate that yours may be the more difficult struggle overall.
You like using un-PC language to get a reaction , yet you have decided that option aint open to a fella like Spike ( or the British ! )for example ,that aint Liberal ideals versus freedom of expression is it ? That's more a question of you tellin Spike not to try for a reaction , bit cheeky mate . Or does your reaction to young Spike confuse you , do you hope to teach him the error of your ways ? Driving the word away, sending it underground/making it taboo , may have an adverse effect, in that it strengthens the words currency , and increases it's shock/hurt value , precisely the reason the gay community started to use it as totem of pride, it then became useless as an insult . Granted the spoken word is easier to judge semanticaly than anything posted here and elsewhere. Or maybe I've listened and read too much Lenny Bruce , maybe .
Anyway ... Please take me out of your bag of homophobic Brits , I'd prefer you did'nt involve me in any sweeping generalisations , however I admire your stance , I can only assume the situation you find yourself in is like the UK in the late seventies , and that seems like another world now. Course I aint sayin people will find it any easier to 'come out ',it's just that the only case I can tell you about first hand, mate of mine Andy ,he felt it was a bit of a letdown , he gathered a few of us in the pub , told us his thing was fellas and got pissed off when we all said in unison , we know ... not typical maybe, but as recent as 87..rare as fuck. Perhaps the next time you see a comment you regard as homophobic , you can just ask the fella/s ( and it is a fella )outright if he is , cos if it's the one I'm thinkin about I'd like to see if he can give an honest answer. I've noticed this as well over the years Pope.
New Order has traditionally had great support from the gay community, albeit mainly for their dance-related product. Case in point a few weeks ago on Queer As Folk (US) as the whole series climaxed with a sped up True Faith (extended '87 Hague) playing over the top.

You can remove me from your list of homophobic Brits as well. Anyone who thinks I may be even slightly homophobic doesn't know me very well, that's all I'll say.
Great reply, Gary - though perhaps worth pointing out that although things have certainly improved in this country, Clause 28 is still depressingly alive and well...

Thanks Martin , I mentioned clause 28 as a point of reference should anyone not from these shores or too young to remember its conception and implementation want to look it up, but yes sadly it is still sadly alive and well , and pretty soon the younger generation of the initial opposition to it , should/may become our elected decision makers .... will it be turned over ? Lets hope , eh ?
And obviously in your line of work , you'll probably have experienced some of the ramifications , first hand perhaps ,certainly I'd guess some of your colleagues would have .

Gary Wonderful rebuttal, Gary. I seriously doubt that anyone on these boards is a gay-bashing bigot, so please don't think that I consider any of you the sort (to use an extreme example) who would tie a gay man to a fence and beat him to death (as infamously happened to Matthew Shepard in Colorado in 1998). I think it's a great thing that words like 'gay,' 'queer,' 'homo,' and 'fag' have been/are being reappropriated by the gay community. I can empathize with the "plight" of a young closeted man because one of my close friends in high school was; in fact, not one single person in my high school was publicly "out," such was the oppressive atmosphere where people would say 'gay' this and 'gay' that as if it were so horrible to be homosexual.
That said, language is a very prickly pear (especially when it comes to slang that doesn't transfer from place to place), and as much as I hate self-righteous PC people who say not to do or say this or that, I often find myself chastising people for things, becoming what I hate, and I'm certainly guilty of having a good laugh at various gay jokes, be they at the expense of the gay community or not (yes, you could search my own back posts and no doubt find a number of such cracks). I love taboo language and getting a rise out of people, though I often use it in my everyday talk as an exaggeration to show how various prejudices are laughable when taken to an extreme. For example, just because the black community has reappropriated the word "nigger," I'm not about to walk around using it--but I will adopt a Southern drawl and use it to mock redneck prejudices (of course, showing my own prejudiced assumptions about various socioeconomic classes and regions of the country). It was silly of me to make generalizations about "the British contingent" given my lack of knowledge in British slang, but I've just noticed that the sort of comments like (for example) "[Musician/band/person] is/are a bunch of poofs/fags/etc." seem to come more commonly from the British element on this site; that said, no need for anyone to apologize or defend themselves since it is only a gross generalization and I'm not trying to imply that everyone in England is prejudiced.
I'm certainly secure in my own sexuality, but knowing both how Canadian slang is very close to American slang and how Spike is still in high school, I'm sure he knows how the adjective "gay" is thrown about haphazardly without being in any sort of context. You might think that because it has no context that it's okay, but that sort of casual, mildly-prejudiced usage by the hetero majority helps create an oppressive atmosphere at an age where young people are particularly vulnerable about their own blossoming sexuality.
Up until a few years ago (when fresh out of high school), I would still say things like "Yeah, when that happened, it was really gay" and so on. But then one of my friends started asking me, "So what exactly is homosexual about that?"--and I started to see how my unconscious use of the word 'gay' in a negative context was a bad use of the language.
So, Spike, instead of me saying to you or anyone else what you should or shouldn't say, start asking yourself and your peers if what you are describing as 'gay' really has anything to do with homosexuality or the gay community. That is all.

I shouldn't have edited that out really, sorry. I take on board some of the points you have raised though , it's a very dodgy area and sadly missunderstandings are all too common . Still, as I've mentioned on other threads , an attraction of these boards is a frank exchange of ideas and opinion as well as the more lighthearted banter .
Cheers

I hear what you are saying, Pope. Having many friends on "the other team" I try to limit my use of derogatory gay terms. A hetro jock is a bigger threat to me and my family than any homosexual.
On a more deeper level, I stopped using the term "cock sucker, " especially in the presence of women. Why make them think that cock sucking is bad, something to be ashamed of?? It should be encouraged. I now use the term "cock bite" instead. Cock biting needs to be discouraged IMHO.

To be honest, Gary, the 'moral' strictures of Clause 28 don't apply to the University sector, thank God, though my endless blethering about homoeroticism does tend to bring out the worst in the more unenlightened sectors of the undergraduate community...
As an aside, perhaps worth explaining to non-UK NOOL-ers that Clause 28 was a law passed in the mid- to late-80s which made it illegal for school teachers to "promote" homosexuality in the classroom, i.e. - treat it as an equal or valid alternative to normative heterosexuality. The knock-on of this, of course, is that many teachers are far too scared to even broach the topic for fear of breaking the law, and hence more ignorance amnongst the populace. Probably also worth pointing out that sex education in this country is fucking appalling, which is why we have the highest rates of teen pregnancy in Europe....
Clay, has Blair's government ever tried to pass legislation making this idiotic clause defunct? Or does he fear that moderates would jump over to the conservative camp if he attempted to further gay rights?

Your second question answers itself, my friend: the clause should have been repealed yonks ago (though, of course, it should never have been introduced in the first place): my guess is that Blair & co. (who are pretty gay-friendly) WANT to get rid of it, but as you say, are far too scared that middle-England would go mental if any attempt was made to go near it - far too much of a potential vote-loser. Because, of course, the loony left are all rabid queers and inevitably want to convert everyone else to their perverted "lifestyle choice".
What a wonderful world we live in.
When the gay communities in the US and European countries achieve more of their goals of allowing gay marriage and bridging the gap between heterosexual and homosexual couples, maybe then that will influence the UK to step up its gay rights movement.

True, but several European nations already allow gay marriage freely. Holland (big surprise!) and Sweden (I think) come to mind, but there may be others.
