In reponse to last years, "whats your favourite depeche album" poll, heres one for which i expect similar venom. For me, has to be strangeways.

I mean, Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Queen Is Dead (the title track) and The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (the very song that got me into music! the first to be important for me and making me a fan of a band) on the SAME album! You can't beat that...

'The Man With A Thorn Up His Arse'. Not a Smiths album I know, but after I finish writing my autobiography 'I Am An Arsehole' (with a foreword by Auntie Liam), that's the title I'm giving to my book on Morrisey.

"The Smiths" - you can't fault an album with "Reel around the fountain" and "Suffer Little Children" on it. "Strangways" would be second (it was great to hear "A Rush and A Push" on Sat'day), but I have developed a recent enormous liking for the title track on TQID. I don't count "Hatful"/"World Won't"/"Louder" as albums, but "Hatful" is my favourite compilation by anyone ever.

What a fucking great band.

Funny. I cannot stand Strangeways, I don't like any of the songs on there, and Stephen the vain has disappeared up his own arse with some of the lyrics.

For me, the first album was excellent, but I preferred the wonderful Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead.

I have to say Strangways used to be my least favourite too, but has grown on me loads over the years (like Brotherhood). Some of the tracks are outstanding, and musically there are some real gems: scratchy Velvets guitar ending to "Death of a Disco Dancer", and the gently strummed "I Won't Share You" which like Buzzcocks' "I Believe" was a fitting last-song-on-last-album. Plus "Paint a Vulgar Picture" still sums up the music industry better than any other song. The only real weak track is "Death At One's Elbow", I reckon.

Why isn't Rank listed? It's live, but it's still a good album.

I voted for Hatful Of Hollow because it was the first Smiths album i bought (about 1984, if i remember) and the music and lyrics on it changed my life (no, really).
