OK so I decide to update my virus scanner and run it before I retire tonight. No Big Deal, do this all the time. Update and reboot. Click on McAffee and get error message. Weird.
So I reboot again. System hangs on Windows 98 screen. Ctrl ALt Delete. Error in virus scanneer. Restart in safe mode and run Stinger virus scanner, run AdAware6, check msconfig. Nothing weird or out of place.
Reboot. System hangs again. Restart in safe mode, delete McAffee. Reboot. No problems, pc starts, Windows loads. Reinstal virus scanner and attempt update again.
Update needed, engine old, yadda yadda yadda. OK go to update site, they want $$$. Search around McAffee website looking for the engine I need for the update. BINGO
Class Action Lawsuit. IF you purchased McAffee 3x-4x THEN you get a free update to version 8x. I had 4x.
OK I lost an hour of precious sleep and damn near threw my monitor out the window and bitched at Wifey and kids for contracting this phantom virus. The fuckers could have emailed me to explain that my version was no longer updatable and that they lost their ass in court and owed me a new version anyway.
BUT if I was unable to reboot in safe mode, which I doubt many people have even heard of safe mode, I would have been left with a very large paper weight or a service call or trip to the technician. Thye very least McAffe could have done was send a message that my scanner was no longer upgradable.
